Incidentally, is there a preference for explanatory posting or just plain image dumping? Any of my explanations about the maids are deductions at best, but I've got a lot of images from which to deduce.

Most of my interest (and consequentially, what I've learned the most about) is with the Eastern mythology maids, pictured here and in the first post. There's the four gods (Suzaku, the red bird, Byakko, the white tiger, Genbu, the snake/turtle, and Seiryu, the blue dragon), the four demons/whatever (Kikyu, the winged tiger maid who represents deviousness, Toukotsu the LARGE tiger girl with the miles-long tail who represents ignorance and laziness, Toutetsu the large ox girl who represents gluttony, and Konton who represents chaos, and is a shapeshifting dog girl with the many wings in op). And there's all the assorted dragons, and Ho-Oh, and etc etc.

Kikyu, perhaps the most sociable maid out there (judging by how goddamn many pictures there are of her and how commonly those involve her messing around with other maids), seen here wearing a tiger wrestling mask much like the protagonist of that anime about gymnastic street fighting, has a penchant for causing trouble.

This usually involves shoving slices of cake into people's faces for some reason. I don't know why.

Some of the vanilla maids are just harder to distinguish, except for the ones Shii explains. There's a lot of them out there, but not all of them have a lot of images. If you want any in particular I'm up for suggestions.

Shii has some descriptions as stated earlier, but everything I know about them is just stuff I've deduced from the images I've found over at the maid warehouse, kazumi386 dot org slash tilde maid.

TECHNICALLY they have a game, in so far as Nijiura has a game that features a lot of them. It's called Nijikaku, it's a MUGEN fighter. That's pretty enlightening into what the characters' various themes are. Yakui in particular has some pretty interesting dynamics to her usage.

She likes to hang around with less reputable maids like Kyuki and Kaitai, and also Yakui and Shitai (it's always a group of three for some reason). To her credit, she's the one that's the voice of reason keeping the others in line, even if she seems to be the silent type.

These are Kusai-san, one of the alien maid species. The other is Inu, which you see coming out of Kyuki's bucket there (it's usually in the form of a amorphous blob with a dog collar on but sometimes it's a translucent, mouthless maid girl with dog ears and a tail who's still made of goo). The two species hate each other.

I don't think there's any real framework to it either, people just draw them and trends tend to stick. They're not really memes, either, not really. They all represent things, yes, but it's more like concepts, like there's the lazy maid, there's the confused maid, there's the failure maid, there's the talkative maid, there's the drugs maid, the eldritch horror maid, etc etc.

Beats me. I don't know anything about their origins, I just try to figure out what they ARE by way of the evidence that exists.

I can explain ones like Yabai, though, who is based off of a horror manga about a demon owl that bleeds from its eyes and kills anything it sees. I can never remember the name and I don't think anyone's ever really translated it and I can't find raws anymore, but I do know that much about it.

I'm not getting these from the active Nijiura boards themselves. I just find them on that Kazumi site, which is essentially just an archive of images. I don't think they're really archived for quality because frankly some of them are kind of shitty but there's no commentary, just images. I'm too much of a novice to navigate the actual nijiura boards for too long and maintain my sanity, and trawling the archive takes enough time as it is.

There are lots of holes in my understanding of these things. Like this one, I have no idea what this one's name is or what she's supposed to be based off of. I guess it's some mythological creature since she's categorized under them, but I'm still in the dark otherwise.

That aside, I like what they've done with the Hundun maid, though I wish she was less of a dog and more of a protean mass of limbs and wings like it is in some of its descriptions. Getting that whole "faceless beast" deal across with covered eyes is a good idea, though.

Kaitai, the patchwork surgery maid, is, best I can tell, a lot like Dorei in the silent suffering department, but she has quiet a bit more suffering to content with, especially since Kyuki hangs around with her so much. She pretty much takes her apart and puts her back together to suit her whims, with all the innocent joy of a child playing with legos. Dorei... Well, sometimes she stops them and sometimes she just goes with it, because the other two are kind of assholes anyway.

They're not all necessarily puns. Ones like Genbu and Byakko are just representative of their respective mythological figures. You'll often see some kind of joke or other with them but I can't claim to know what they all mean if they're pun-based. This one's easy enough to get, though (Genbu is a turtle she's slow ha ha ha)
