Even that's going to be prone to error. Which definition is the right in which context? If you're using a machine translator, you get to see possible word substitution. Even if you're using a full dictionary, that gives definitions, not context or usage, so reading it doesn't really give the meaning. There are plenty of very simple and common words and phrases that you see poorly or mistranslated all the time (sasuga's a popular one) because all people do is substitute it for the first definition listed in the dictionary without understanding the actual meaning behind it.

There's no substitute for experience.

Bugs that were present with the original Japanese release are fixed. The translation was actually looked over and fixed up (the "leaked" patch was translated once and not even read over once for flow or accuracy). Images with text in them were edited. D-Mail text was edited to fit the in-universe D-Mail rules. Certain terms were adjusted to match 5pb.'s official stance. The music player was given a Lyrics function. The engine was made to run on any locale. TIPS are now sorted alphabetically instead of gojuon order. ESRB rating means it can be sold in venues that require it (not like they'll stock it).

>『ひぐらしのなく頃に』(ひぐらしのなくころに、When They Cry)は、同人サークル『07th Expansion』によるコンピューターゲーム作品である。ゲームジャンルはサウンドノベル。
And in the infobox:
>ゲームジャンル サウンドノベル

Even if it didn't refer to the game as sound novel, it would most definitely not refer to it as a 'visual novel', since that's only a generic term in the West (whereas in Japan, like 'sound novel', it has more specific connotations). The generic names for VNs in Japan are 'ADV' and 'NVL' (depending on the text style, though they change up the usages every now and then - Chaos;Head was marketed as a 'Delusional Science NVL' despite being ADV).

I agree with you that it should just be called a VN in the West, but they just don't use the same terminology the same way in Japan.

I personally didn't read it most of the time. I understood Makina's speech in Japanese better than the English translation. Probably because English isn't my first language to begin with, so some phonetic spelling is lost on me.

>Music Room-Because a few BGMs/SEs were replaced, the original license holder requested that we remove this feature as part of our adaptation of Higurashi.

>Minigame-This was removed because of technical issues as well as copyright issues with some characters from other companies who have a cameo appearance in the minigame. In the original game they were used without permission, and we have not received permission to use them either, so the minigame was removed.
>The Staff Room section is similar to a diary for Ryukishi, and contains various topics relating to games, products, and other material during the time he worked on Higurashi. Since we have no permission for any of the games or products he discussed, this section was removed as well.
>As a doujin game, Ryukishi was able to use many songs, characters, and topics without permission for these features, but as an official release we need permission from the copyright holders to use them. Since we couldn’t obtain all the licenses for all of the characters and products featured in these sections, they were unfortunately removed. >You can imagine what would happen if we were to release a product without mosaics, can’t you? Such data would be leaked back into Japan with almost 100% certainty. With networks now being worldwide, this is only a matter of course. Yet for us, this poses nothing other than a business risk.
>but so long as there are people who refuse to comply with our requests to stop, we are forced to take measures against them as we have to bear responsibility as the developers of our games.
>In other words, if we were to make the uncensored CG available to the world, then some inconsiderate person would extract the data from our archives and leak the CG back into Japan. If it was just the CG alone it might be a different matter, but one can easily imagine that just as many of those fan-translating bishojo games have done, someone would then take the English version’s CG, create a patch that allows one to play the Japanese version with uncensored CG, and spread that across Japan as well.

As you said, they're stupid (and rather paranoid) excuses. But I find it very hard to believe that the incident with C&D notice being ignored isn't related to their actions regarding the Western release. Furthermore, they should know that Mangagamer has contracts with other companies, releases their titles uncensored and those companies (as far as I know) haven't been penalized for doing that.

It does make more sense to think that minori is acting professionally rather than holding a grudge, but given their actions so far, I don't see enough ground to justify that. Specially for not allowing hard-copies.

I read that blog post back when it came out too.

Anyways, even if you're saying that Minori is taking passive aggressive actions against its English release instead of being generally misguided, I'd still think the C&D has nothing to do with this.

Not only they already payed NNL for their work and they're not even working with Minori anymore (as far as I know, anyways), but they might be losing on potential returns from that supposedly begrudging investment.

If anything, them being xenophobes in general seems like a more likely theory if you want to believe they have ulterior motives for acting stupid.

>A lot of the cut music was shit that was submitted to R07 to be used in the game.
Bullshit. Ryukishi was a no-name author back when he was writing Higurashi. It wasn't until Higurashi Kai that people submitted music for him to use (and that music was kept AFAIK, though I'm not sure as I used the music patch).

That said, I believe the French translation DID manage to license all of it. But that was a translation done out of passion, not as business.

>Both such games got a voice patch within days of release anyway.
It took a little over a year and a month for Koihime Musou, and it took over 2 years and 3 months for Kara no Shoujo. You can verify the dates yourself with VNDB. If you're talking about unofficial voice patches, that does not excuse the publisher for removing content.

Line count is an inaccurate measure, as different writing styles lead to more or less words per sentence, meaning the same amount of text can be few or many sentences in a different writer's style. (Line count is inaccurate. Some people write short sentences. Some prefer long ones. Short sentence writers have higher line counts. It's a matter of style.)

Although f/sn has a MUCH higher line count than I/O (94,127 vs 54,840 (58%), the difference in script size is a lot less (3.85 MB vs 3.12 MB (81%). Fate/stay night is still clearly longer than I/O, but I/O IS very long (compared to I/O, Ever17 is much shorter at 1.86 MB (60%), Never7 is even shorter and Remember11 is presumably also shorter than Ever17 but I don't have the stats on that one. Steins;Gate is also shorter at 1.78 MB).

Except, you know, the part where that wasn't a coincidence at all. If it weren't for that virus, Tsugumi wouldn't be there that day.

You have to admit Ever17 and Remember11 excel in the plot department. Never7 ruins the world building for the entire series, and throughout the series the characters are good but not excellent, but plot is one thing you have to admit the infinity series does have.

>If anything, them being xenophobes in general seems like a more likely theory if you want to believe they have ulterior motives for acting stupid.
This is very much true. Minori are a bunch of close-minded, xenophobic and most of all paranoid idiots. They blocked gaijin access to their site, made various xenophobic and paranoid statements regarding gaijin playing their games, they instantly C&Ded when they noticed their projects were being translated, they sued the maker of ExtractData (a tool to rip assets from VNs), all of them with similar justifications. Their current behavior fits this same line of thinking perfectly.

The only strange thing that still surprises me is that MangaGamer got minori to actually work towards a release outside of Japan.

I don't have to do any such thing. In fact, for the overwhelming majority of Ever17, the plot hardly exists while they're fucking around with kick the can and chicken sandwiches.

never 7 was great, what does it fuck up? it was the beginning of it all and explained the basic part of ever 17. remember 11 was the best game though, it was the deepest one and you had you fucking sit and think of a long time even after the game ended. I/O is gonna be great and deep no matter what, its really only moe likers that hate these games.

>Order does not matter with Infinity series right?
It doesn't. Only effect order has is that you might like E17 and R11 less if you play N7 first since it introduces bullshit that is unfortunately canon in the other two games.

Also note that E17 is the most well-received one but is considered to have many slow parts, R11 is less well-received but is considered exciting throughout the entire story, and N7 is considered rather average and is a lot more like typical romance VNs.

(Never7 and Ever17 and Remember11) Cure Syndrome is basically a 'get out of plot free' card. If people believe something happens, it happens! Before N7 was translated there was speculation about things like why Ever17's life counter was inconsistent or why Hokuto lost his memory, but Never7 basically makes the canon answer to those questions 'because we said so'. Ever wonder why Blick Winkel or Self exist? CURE SYNDROME! Ever wonder how Cure Virus came to exist? CURE SYNDROME! Ever wonder why Coco can communicate with BW? CURE SYNDROME! The answer to everything can be 'CURE SYNDROME!' and for all we know it could be the canon answer. Having Cure Syndrome in any universe means that any asspull can happen in that universe for no reason whatsoever.

Fortunately, I/O does not use infinity series canon as far as I'm aware.

This was the ONLY enjoyable part of Chapter 1. Aside from that one CG of her cursing him out at his funeral in super-deformed mode.
