It'd be great to know if Mangagamer has approached FAVORITE to get a license for Irotoridori no Sekai. Irotoridori no Hikari, the fan disc, got in 2012 the award for best pure love story. Given that Hoshimeno had a pretty good reception by the community, I think that Irotoridori no Sekai and its fandisc would do pretty well. I'm pretty sure that those titles are way better than Da Capo 3.

If Mangagamer succeeded to obtain the licenses, they could try to acquire the translation already done (?) by Tokidan and actually release something. The fan-translation project seems more dead than anything else. The translator could at least admit that he's not working on it anymore.

And even if we concede that all Japanese punctuation is sacred and must be retained as is, how does that mean that adding even more ellipses above and beyond what are already there is not his fault?

Comyu's a really pretty mediocre game that's five times longer than it needs to be because it's so bloated with purple prose. And it's being translated by someone who doesn't understand metaphor, so I can only imagine how that's going to turn out. Mahoutsukai is also not much longer than half a moege and there's really not much of a story even there. Neither are going to cause much of a splash.

Most of the big name things that have a good chance of coming out in 2014 are the official stuff that's fully translated. Even Jast can't sit on all their games forever. Steins;Gate, Cartagra, Sumaga, Seinarukana, and Romanesque are all notable and are mostly done. FHA also has a good chance of being released this year just because what else are they going to do once it hits 100% for the fourth time?

Well, that's just what happens when your 10-point scale ratings are combined with other people's 10-point scale ratings. '5/10 I enjoyed it' makes no sense when '5' is considered strongly in the 'do not play' range. Also, a bias to higher scores is inevitable as you generally avoid bad games. (I myself generally don't rate games until I've finished them or otherwise am convinced I've properly seen what the game has to offer, so most of the things I drop, I don't vote for.)

Completely disagree.

There's a lot in Forest worth reading outside of characters speaking over each other. I am really glad it got translated and that I got to read it.

I understand that there are things that cannot survive translation and other things that cannot have the same impact due to presentation limitations, but really, there was so much in Forest outside of that text.

It's a typo for "In testing", but mangagamer's status updates are 50% bullshit(only the translation part is really accurate).

For example, Chou Dengeki Stryker has been "In scripting" for years. In reality, what happened is that it was pre-doddler, so the translation is all done and they're waiting... and waiting... for overdrive to insert them.

But at the same time, D2B vs Deardrops is also "In scripting". In reality, doddler's still finishing up that new unity engine he's making and then he'll insert it into that.

Softserve Shit games are all kirikiri which is open source and has plenty of tools just laying about the internet, therefore insertion is easy. Therefore Boob Wars is either;

A: Being proof-read/edited
B: Doddler's slammed the scripts in and handed them out to be checked to see how he broke it(he always fucks something up in the softhouse seal games)

>garbage writing
>garbage story
>shitty clone characters over and over
>no animation
>barely any art to goggle on
>no music
>no interaction
>no porn

The only reason that it exists and it's selling well is because kids can't afford the "better" forms of entertainment, due to time, money, place or whatever other reasons.

Just because 90% of LNs are shit, it doesn't mean that they're inherently worse than any other form of entertainment.

It just so happens that since the standards of the target demographic (otaku) are so low, most stuff that would get filtered otherwise gets to be published.

That doesn't mean that there aren't worthwhile LNs that would have trouble catching on as normal literature.

Some gagaga LN's have porn. I'm pretty sure there's one that has a shit load of explicit futa sex for some reason.

If those represent the average LN + porn, prepare for huge disappointment.
I had high hopes for LN as I like to read books. In the end, most of my attempted reads were just like "fan fictions".
And not the good kind. (I don't believe there are good fan-fictions, but whatever)
A good depiction would be, Mary Sue's adventure in Harem Land written by your typical fat girl.
I do hope I am wrong though. Meaning that I just picked the horrible ones.

Some famous writers started by writing fan-fiction. Consider that anyone, anywhere could simply have the wish of exploring a certain fictional universe by writing stories related or inside it. However, I doubt most of the people who put effort in writing fan-fictions actually bother with advertising their works everywhere. I wonder why fan-fictions atract so many incompetent writers though. Also, have you given Kino no Tabi and Baccano/Durarara!! a shot? They're pretty famous and I found the editions I've read to be pretty entertaining.

They don't. I mean, not particularly. It's just that most people are terrible writers, and there's no editors or the like stopping the out-pour of shit posted online.

But perhaps more importantly, the communities are so closed off and specific that you can win them over by just pandering to their tastes. You know, like with LNs. Or VNs. Or comic books, for that matter.

So VNs, LNs and Comic books are all shit.
I don't get you guys, you act like you have read everything of those genres and are "expert" enough to pronounce that they are shit regardless of anything.

I don't think his point was that they're all shit, but you can get easy money by pandering to people's tastes instead of actually putting effort into what you're doing (hence why the VN industry is filled with moege and nukige).

I think there are good LNs, when I made my original post I was thinking of early adapters of the genre (Kino no Tabi, Boogiepop), things that created the formulas for new works (Shakugan no Shana, Haruhi Suzumiya, things by Ryougo Narita) and hipster books (Jinrui wa Suitai-shimashita, Ame no Hi no Iris)

My stance is that most niche entertainment (LNs, VNs, comic books, "genre" fiction, late night anime) becomes formulaic after particularly successful endeavors in the mediumn/genre, only to be shaken up by other successful works that change the formula for later rehashes.

And by the way, the quality is completely independent on whether or not they're formulaic, trendsetters, or even successful.

He's... alright. Too literal. Could use an editor. I think I remember noticing a minor mistake or two when I read Period, but nothing disastrous.
