I've came to the conclusion that Gentoo is the best and most advanced operating system on Earth. Of course it's just GNU/Linux, but Gentoo specifically has a lot of things special about it and allows extreme flexibility and choice, and makes that choice easy and convenient because it wants you to do it. The only thing close in that respect is FreeBSD.

It basically boils down to the way you configure/install your own kernel, compile the packages yourself with your own settings rather than from a packager which has to make it a generic one size fits all package, sticking to Unix tradition, tools like eselect which allow you to switch between different versions or choices for many things, for example you might have different versions of java or php you want to use, reinstalling all external module packages after a new kernel, and portage. Portage's extreme flexibility is really amazing, there's typically several different versions of a package available in the repo, and you can choose to install any which one, if you want bleeding edge for just one package or stability you have it. Another thing would be USE flags, which is most of the time the equivalent of changing the configure script options and allows you add in or remove support for many things selectively easily. There's simply no other distro where you can hack the shit out of it and still have it breathing, you can change your init system, support for something in all packages, your bootloader, very complex networking setups, something like hardened gentoo with extreme security, etc. and relative to other distros Gentoo makes it easy to do, or in many cases possible at all.

You should install Gentoo, it's really an amazing piece of technology.

More importantly, Gentoo steers the user towards nonfree programs, which is why it is not one of our recognized free distros.
