Too bad like most kombi who get popular enough, they don't do any actual manzai anymore. Gaki's Free Talk was hilarious stuff with Matsumoto going crazy on random subjects with lots of adlibbing and Hamada being great tsukkomi instead of the weird angry/tennen character he is today.
I think Gaki should disband and Downtown should do something with just the two of them, no matter how awkward it would be for themselves (based on the moments on Waratte wa Ikenai where they are left alone for a while).

I'd say it's mostly Matsumoto's personality.
That kind of partnership isn't that rare, though. At least Jamie & Adam and apparently Penn & Teller have a similar situation.

>>12489674
GnT is probably one of the few shows where such skits are done. The program has gone for over 25 years, so making new interesting episodes should be pretty hard. The recent "cry while acting" competition was a good one, though.

No. Hamada is the much more social person. Just the fact that Matsumoto got married 20 years later than Hamada should tell you a lot.

What qualifies as "being funny himself"? I'd say his solo talk moments on Matsuko & Ariyoshi are funny enough. It's not like any other popular pin-geinin do purely one-man acts.
I like how he does even low-budget stuff ひろいきの despite being as succesful as he is. I laughed my ass off for the episodes where they teached him tsukkomi and ippatsu gags.

I knew he had gone through a lot of shit during the Denpa Shounen days, but after watching just few minutes of the Eurasia-Europe hitch-hiking trip I already feel bad for him.

Most famous comedians can be funny enough when given the screen time to shine. What bothers me a bit about Ariyoshi is that he returned to show business by dissing others. He's usually funny by shitting on others. Which can be plenty funny if it's some famous comedian he shits at, but lacks substance once it wears off.

How about Tokui? He's a sick pervert, but he's funny. Shame he's paired up with Fukuda though.

The "comedy kings" you describe (like Moody Katsuyama, Kojima Yoshio and Sugi-chan) get hugely popular for about a year and after that they fade quickly into obscurity.

A much bigger problem in general (in both IRL and anime) are all the lazy tsukkomi. Stating the obvious, explaining things and repeating stuff in an angry voice just isn't funny in 95% of the cases.

One thing people often don't get or misunderstand is that Manzai isn't mainstream.

Even comedians that started out as Manzai don't pull their Manzai skits in normal comedy shows. They only do it for the Manzai tournaments. They do have a bit of a boke/tsukkomi routine, but it's not as stiff and forced as in Manzai.

This only applies to newer comedians though. The older the comedians, the more they rely on routines and ippatsu gags.

tl;dr Don't watch Manzai shit. Watch shows like Shabekuri 007.

I truly think Matsumoto is a comedy genius. One of the funniest people in the world.

He's the only guy who seems really dedicated to his work, his love for comedy and his vision of it. You'll rarely seen someone with such a strong artistic perception of comedy. He's really taking this shit seriously. Even if Japan's public isn't font of Konto and more written humor, he'll still do some and show of far he can go in terms of comedy creation, try to go beyond what people except of him.

Rven if R100 is flawed as fuck (especially the ending), there's just something in it, something that makes you go "Well, that can only be Matsumoto and nobody else". And that's what makes him the most outstanding comedian, hell, artist in Japan.

unfortunately this guy gets it. Japanese comedy is mostly catchphrases and slapstick, but if you find good quality stuff it's good. This is how Downtown got big in the first place, 10-20 years ago Matsumoto was a genius, considering his long, bizarre stories were nearly always made-up on the spot.

>> No.12516015

well they went through school together, and stopped doing stand-up comedy together ages ago. Their relationship at this stage is no closer than "just some guy you see at work occasionally" level.

Hell, they've said a heap of times in various batsu games how little they really know each other. Matsumoto doesnt even know Hamada's phone number, for example. Kind of a big deal considering you'd think they'd have to text or call to sort out some stuff for their shows.

They suffer from Yogscast Syndrome. Comedy duo where only 1 guy actually does anything and is funny, and famous for something they did 10 years ago that their fans have long-since forgotten about but their fans and the media just won't let them die.

They just elevated their relationship to something even deeper than friendship. Of course they care about each other - Matsumoto was deeply concern about Hamada's health when he broke a leg - they just don't show it/don't think they even need to show it.

He did not. He was so embarrassed that he couldn't read the letter himself and even after Tanaka started reading it, he stopped him after only few lines.
I thought he would have read it on the next 24h batsu games since its trailer showed some emotional reactions of the crew, but it ended up being the VTRs about Yamazaki and Tanaka's kids.
