I was in the same boat. I think I went 2.5 years of nothing 2D related, but one day I met someone at work who's an otaku and that reignited my interest in this lifestyle. I would recommend going to that convention (even though I consider them the lowest forms of human).

So far all the otaku I've met at my university have been normal average looking humans. I've yet to meet the stereotypical otaku filth that I see online. With that said, otakus are generally bad at keeping in contact. I think if you're a loner you naturally gravitate to anime and nerdy things.

The most shocking thing about getting back into the otaku lifestyle was that ME!ME!ME! video that /a/ seems to love (sarcasm). I felt a range of emotions while trying to fap to it. It was like a mixture of confusion, shame and lust all hitting me at the same time. Before I became a normalfag fapping to something like that would have been another day's work, but now it seems so unnatural. It's as if she's looking though my soul and telling me to reject and denounce my normalfaggotry.

You haven't been posting on /jp/ for long if you say that. This board's post rate has arguably decreased since the glory days of when /jp/ and old /a/'s userbase was one. Some boards on 4chan are immune to growth and will always have a low post count. If you're saying that the userbase has been replaced with less TruNeets then perhaps you're right. I think the combination of captcha and reddit has slowed down 4chan's growth (not by much, but a significant amount).
