That method isn't exactly great though. My first trip to Tokyo, I stayed with some relatives who lived at Yokoto Air Base. Sightseeing was hell, because we had to sign papers and shit each time we left and entered the base, and we had to be accompanied by someone who lives in the base. Plus, there was a curfew, so we had to rush through our plans each day. Wasn't a very enjoyable experience.

Since ~2010 I've been following Comiket, scrambling around PD/upload threads/various spreadsheets, and even buying some albums that never showed up.

Now for the first time I can actually physically be there, and it looks like there's very little music I actually care about. C'est la vie... it will still be fun, though!

If you're sightseeing in Tokyo with your family again then you should really look into staying at the New Sanno Hotel in downtown (Hiroo / 広尾 area) Tokyo. Your military family member will have to be staying with you (not necessarily the same room though) in order for you to stay, unless you're a military dependent or something. The hotel is run by the Navy but it is seriously one of the nicest in the city and costs about 30% as much as you'd pay in a comparable Japanese place.

There is also a US post office in the basement that you can use to ship junk back to yourself for a lot less than what you'd pay at the Japanese post office - think normal US priority mail vs EMS. The Hiroo subway station is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel, so you can get to just about any major station from there.

The basic game requires you to be online when you start it because of their anti-piracy stuff. After that you could go offline.

The crack that people made requires you to NOT be online when you start the game to trick their anti-piracy stuff. If you are online when you use the crack it won't work and just shows an error message.

If you also edit some Windows root files you can be online when you start the game with the crack. There should be a tutorial for that in one of the old NoR threads. I remember reading it there myself.

Have a hit list of circles you want to buy from. Research on the catalog whre they are located. If they are with a hiragana letter in the circle ID thy are most likley popular so prioritize those as they sell quickly. Have a map and try to draw an optimal route between circles to minimize time loss so you can hopefully get stuff before it sells out.

Day1 everyone fights for corporate stuff. Theres also BL if you're into that.
Day2 is all the 2hu shit.
Day3 is all the ero.

Go early if you plan to buy from popular circles, wear warm clothes that you can later remove once you get indoor. (fuyucomi)
Don't bring bulky bags, leave it at the hotel, house or hostel (usually they can look after your bag for a minimal fee)
Go to the washroom before the line as you lose time if you need to go whilst in the rush.

My first Comiket day was quite succesful. On first day I decided to go the company booths only. I stayed up whole night at Tokyo Big Sight so I was among firsts in the line and I was able to pick some good items early. Still I ended up wasting time because I am stupid foreigner who didn't understand how those lines outside work and prioritized booths bit wrong. I especially regret I missed Oregairu goods. Also I wanted Fate products from Ufotable, but didn't even bother lining for them. Also one Tsuriotsu poster got sold out before I got one for myself, because I thought it won't be that popular.

Because there weren't any "upload" threads. There were "shitposting about uploads" threads. The last few "upload" threads /jp/ had probably had hundreds of deleted posts in them each, and all the links (before everyone switched over to Mega) got reported and deleted.
99% of the content was taken from other places anyways (PD, Baidu), and there are still a few people that post selfrips to /jp/, those are really the only ones that matter anyways, since everything else gets posted other places now.
