Here we go:

Oh, past experience doesn't follow to today. The compilation projects popped up from the /jp/ project threads of... 1-2 years ago? Lots of people seemed to flock those threads, and it drew the ire of the locals, accusing everything that came out as 'crossie shit'. At that time, we managed to finish both albums within 2 months or something. The first literally overflowed with submissions and we had to cut it into 2 cds. Then we let it die for a while. For a full year, in my estimate. And from last October (yes, last year), upon the suggestion of an anon I happened to read from the OC thread (I was actually for the terms "/jp/ project" and "music compi" from the archive) I reorganized the dropbox and such and started gathering submissions from the OC thread - yes I've been on a vigil ever since, watching for interest to come back and replying to questions about the compilation, handing out the links as necessary. And so far, given the rather dry reception and submission, I may admit that the locals from way back were vindicated - it seems those threads were filled with crossies after all. And they've all gone now.

So, in short, we may be in for the long haul for this one - which is no problem for me, I can keep this up for as long as it takes. Take it easy and submit your works at your leisure.

Well, it's not like that really matters to me. I thought about contributing to the compilation again, but I don't have anything board-relevant to contribute, I think. I don't have the drive to make Touhou arranges like I did back then, nor do I arrange anything else /jp/-relevant, and I don't make original music like you guys do. And lately I'm just unhappy with the musics I've been writing, and it's kinda painful seeing a bunch of unfinished music lying around that you know will never go anywhere.

Oh, don't worry about it; that happens to me quite a lot too. From last year, around March, to around October (when the /jp/ OC thread came back to life), I wasn't able to write any music. And now, after writing three, one after another, I don't feel like it again.

I suppose sometimes you need inspiration, though. I listened to some compositions of some /jp/ musicians and found it there. You'll probably find yours some time, some way.

If you're looking to make a contribution, don't worry about /jp/-relevance either. Many anons make original music and they're practically 0% /jp/ because of that. If you want to share something with us, go on ahead.

From what I've seen
-drawn the characters at slightly different angles
-maybe head tilted a bit
-crossed arms
-hands doing something etc

The hard part with this is making not seem forced and unnatural, which goes against the fact that you're not really supposed to be doing anyhting when standing still.

If you want example poses look at Tsunako's in-game art, or any VN really.

So this is the game I've been working on for short while. Took some time to get the basic engine going, but so far I've got 2 characters. One with "3" bullet attacks and the other with a 3 combo slashing attack. They also move differently. Obviously, I took the art from anywhere I can scrounge up, since I'm wholly incapable of producing my own. The sprites for example are from the monstergirl spritesheet of the Elona+ threads.

And I hope you don't mind the clunky video, it's just me playing with the same keyboard and two different control settings.

While I can probably trudge the long load and do the art myself, it'd most likely be both subpar (for my own opinion) and it would take literally forever. Art, all of it.

Sprites. Animated sprites of the characters are a double plus. It's rather unsatisfying to see a static sprite do a slash, yes?
Background. Search "clouds" on google images and you've found the bg I'm currently using.
Bullets. I imagined the bullets to be mostly lasers, but that's only for now. I of course plan on adding more on the future.
Effects. The particles you saw were just hand-me-outs from the particle library demo I studied to implement it. It would be nice to make some more proper effects. For one, a "Hit" effect; I initially imagined it to be rather similar to a fighting game's X shaped "hit animations". Another one that's already programmed in but with no actual art is the sword slashing. I got that animation by poaching a youmu spritesheet I got off google images while searching for "sword slash sprite" or something similar.

That's just a list for the stuff I've already implemented. I hope I'm not coming on too demanding. It's just I'm really excited to find that some fellow /jp/sies are actually interested in my work to help out. I really do appreciate any contribution.

Yes. /g/'s webmCam makes massively bloated webms for some reason. I had to forcibly scale down the window to even make a complete recording. That small video alone is almost 3 mb, 4chan's limit. But don't worry, the actual game is 640x480. So if you can recommend a better webm making software, that would be much appreciated.

Hi again, jaypee. I got really frustrated with the library I'm using this week as I've run into problems with rotation (so I can't make the characters at least face each other) and drawing lines (so I might not be able to make some straight lasers as I hoped to do in the future). I'm currently trying to take it up with the makers themselves. Hopefully they can help me.

Still, I was able to do a few things. I gave a "super jump" to the melee character, which gives a massive boost of speed at the cost of magic, as well as a powerful ranged attack. That's this one:

There are loads of ways you can usually speed JS stuff up.

1) Make sure to cache references to elements.
Don't constantly fetch things.
For example, don't do document.getElementById() in a game loop.
Instead, store that reference and use the reference in the game loop.

2) Not everything needs to happen every frame.
Some things can be deferred for a few frames if they aren't important. You can even skip animation frames of something if it isn't important. (say, explosion animations for example, nobody really cares if fast animation skips a few frames for the sake of overall speed)

3) optimize dat math.
Get rid of divisions anywhere you can. Divisions are god-awful in terms of processing.
Google around on divisionless math
Also google around for general JS Math optimization, there are loads of fun things you can do with bit shifting.

4) loops loops loops.
Reversing loops can usually run much quicker.
There are loads of looping performance tests on JS Perf website, as well as hundreds of other JS Speed demons trying to push JS to the limit.
I highly suggest just reading through them.

So many other things, but I wouldn't know unless I saw your source.

Did you deliberately make his shoulders a bit narrow? In those old aristocratic renaissance paintings typically the subjects had very broad and even padded shoulders. He also needs an archway in the background or a bowl of fruit with fabric covered table, and a striking pose, or something.

The shoulders might still be be too small but the first break is actually a planned fade out of the overcoat. My idea was to shape it in such a way to be a sharp corner to support the cubic cheek and get a line for the eye to follow from it to that bend in the hat. If I'm going to expand the image, I might drop that idea and go for a line from the cheek to the hands passing through the necklace and put a desk with some other parts of the Guennol collections on top.

Draw for fun as a beginner, no need to get serious in the beginning. Guys like me have been drawing since middle school for fun until adulthood. You can copy things, draw from how to draw comic books, dabble in anything--it is the act of drawing that matters.

At the same time you're having fun, read these books:
loomis fun with the pencil (only do the blobs)
keys to drawing
and a basic perspective book for 1,2,3 point.

Get a clipboard and stack of copier paper and draw anything everyday. If you draw everyday for 2 months and decide art is your forte then there.

To answer both, I've been drawing cute girls for a while, but I just recently started practicing at drawing mechanical/hard-surface objects or generating something that looks like it.

Instead of doing the lineart first (which I think is very difficult when it comes to just mechs), and color it afterwards, doing all of it at once in a single layer just like real life painting is a lot more accessible since it gives more options, much like generating character silhouettes
