Hey /jp/ a question for those that already traveled to Japan or people that plan on doing it.

What did you do in Japan and how was it?
Was everything like you expected it or did something surprise you?

If you haven't been there, what do plan on doing?

Got lost in Tokyo, I enjoyed it quite a lot just wandering arround. The back alleys are not dangerous and tend to have cool things you would miss if you stick to the main roads.

I will say some of the buildings do look old fashioned (and no not just the shrines), like something out of Hong Kong, but on the inside they have all the modern appliances and sometimes a few things I rarely if ever see in the US.

It was cool, my hotel was really close to Akihabara so I spent a lot of time there. Very fun to wander around in general, the public transportation only took a couple days to get a hang of. 8/10 would recommend

>What did you do in Japan and how was it?
Spent my time at arcades, shopping for otaku junk and otherwise gawking at the strange foreign land.
Had I been able to stay longer I wouldve liked to go to some more rural areas.

>Was everything like you expected it or did something surprise you?
Kinda. Certain cultural things dont really click until youre forced into them, but so long as you arent expecting it to be just like your japanese animes its city life with more asians. Akiba is the only place where this gets shaken up a bit.

Been there 6 times now (2~3 weeks each time), everything like I expected for the most part.

As for things surprising me, I'd say it's the opposite, I would surprise people most of the time. Mainly because "normals" don't know much about otaku/weird things, so they're surprised when they see a foreigner that's more knowledgeable than them and often ask "how come I know about X or Y" or "if [thing] is popular abroad". Trying to explain them that it's not popular at all but that there are still few people into otaku culture is fun.

Went there last September for 2 1/2 weeks.
I don't think there's going to be much of a surprise for anyone that's somewhat familiar with the country and it's culture.

I had a fairly traditional trip as in I planned a few of the major attractions in my schedule but left most days loose for wandering around town. Like >>13026485 said there are no dangerous places so don't be afraid to leave the main streets. I rented a pocket WiFi which I picked up at the airport on my arrival (I'd recommend this just for maps/quick reference on the go) - I'd take a random train and get off at different stations and start walking around. If I didn't find anything too interesting I'd grab my phone and google anything interesting to see in the area. This method seem to be a favorite from the people here and I can say it's quite fun.

There are three things that I was somewhat expecting but still blew me away.
1. People are always extremely polite and helpful. Always.
2. Trains and public transport if awesome - I come from a town where city buses are never on time and often don't even show up.
3. Although helpful moonspeak is not essential to travel alone in Japan.

If you have the money and don't dislike traveling it's definitely worth it. Plan/explore yourself - stay away from those group trips.

I've only been once but I went for a three month trip after I finished study, I had a rather romanticized view in some aspects from my Chinese cartoons but in general it wasn't too different from what I expected.

Brought a load of weebshit, went to a lot of punk gigs, visited the usual touristy stuff in Kansai/Kanto as well as c87 and porked a few christmas cakes and a college girl.

If I go back it would be to visit Hokkaido in winter, I also want to try hitch-hiking.

Went for 4.5 weeks last March. In order, I went to...

Tokyo
-Weebed the fuck out all over Akiba and bought tons of 2hu merch, played arcades (they had F-Zero AX!)
-Made an effort to wander shibuya, shinjuku, harajuku, and other well known districts
-Saw temples and shrines and stuff.
-Went up the Tokyo Skytree

Osaka
-Stayed in an awful capsule hotel and met a lot of people around the world who also couldn't book a real hotel
-Ate like fucking crazy: Okonomiyaki + Takoyaki + All sorts of shit I didn't know the name off

Kyoto
-Visited all the old ass shrines
-viewed cherry blossoms
-Hiked almost the entirety of Fushimi-Inari
Also I actually stayed in a town called Hirakata since Kyoto was completely booked up due to sakura shit. Stayed at a SUPER hospitable english school that doubled as a guest house.

Kobe
-Had kobe beef in kobe for the novelty
-Walked around Harbor Town. didn't do a whole lot, just stayed there for two nights.

Zao
While heading north to Sapporo from Tokyo again, I made a special stop in this tiny town to visit the Fox Village.

Sapporo
-Ate tons of ramen and beer. Better in this city than anywhere else I went.
-Had 9 drinks in one night with a bunch of strangers
I mostly went all the way here just so I could say I went to hokkaido, however seeing the country side up north for hours and hours out the train was an experience itself. It was mid April by this point in my trip and there was snow melting everywhere. It was beautiful. To and from Sapporo, I spent the night in Aomori to rest from being on the train 6-8 hours. Not a whole lot happened there.

I'm from the country here in the States, so this was my first time on a subway and using public transport in general. Had to figure out how it worked all on my own in a different language! Interacting with people in such a way was a great experience, as I don't speak Japanese. I had a very romantic view of what Japan and it's culture is like and I wasn't disappointed at all.

I went for a week 5 years ago, planning on returning for 2 weeks this November.

Last time I went around May, nice weather, not too hot or cold. I went to Tokyo and how I wandered was I got a map and plotted dots that were places I wanted to see. Then each day I picked a neighborhood and wandered from dot to dot going down any corner that looked neat on the way. This way I saw things I knew I wanted to and ran into neat things I wouldn't have normally seen.

Food isn't that expensive depending on what you eat. Most of the time I went to fast food/small places and got whatever the special was since it was easy to order and usually came with drink etc. Tried a lot of new stuff. Ate whatever ended up on my plate.

Then on my way back to the hotel at night I'd hit up a convenience store for flan and coffee milk and that would be breakfast next morning.

What surprised me was the lack of street names. I'm used to navigating by them so it took some adjusting. I ended up memorizing tall buildings that looked different to help know where I was at any moment. Oh and the trains were way less scary than I'd been told and many maps had english. I avoided rush times though. Also I saw a lot of stray cats.

Sure. I enjoyed my time wandering around places with no aim in particular. To other people, they might think that because I didn't plan my trips down to the minute with where I would go, what I would do there, what I would eat, how I would get there, etc. that I didn't get the most possible out of my trips and that they were a waste. But in reality, wandering freely allowed me to be unhindered by tight schedules, unforseeable delays, and the like, so I was able to enjoy it. Sure, maybe I didn't see as many famous sights as other people have, but I saw things tucked away in corners that aren't on maps, and I ate at restaurants that don't appear in guidebooks and talked at length with the owners. If he enjoys himself by gaming at an arcade, I'm sure it'd make for a great memory.

>What did you do in Japan and how was it?
The first two times I went to Japan were for exchanges - I stayed with Japanese families and checked out the local sights, festivals, temples, etc. I also saw some of the more famous locations in the region such as Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. It was great for a glimpse into how Japanese folk live their everyday lives. Everything was new, the colors seemed more vibrant, the sounds seemed clearer, normal activities were more exciting, it was great.

Now I've been living in Japan for four years and much of that has faded, but I still enjoy it a ton.

>Was everything like you expected it or did something surprise you?
It was an odd mix of both - like I expected there to be vending machines on every corner from all the media I've seen, I knew what the retention walls in Japan were supposed to look like, I knew about the mirrors at intersections, I knew about the power cables... But seeing it all before you is a different thing entirely. It really did turn me into a dumb, "durr, it really does exist" kind of person for a while.

Obviously there are things that I didn't know before coming, such as tolls on all the major highways, just how tiny the ubiquitous kei-trucks are, how kind people could be, just how loud those girls outside the shops shouting "irasshaimase!" really are, etc.

>What did you do in Japan and how was it?
I visited Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo and Suwa. I was there with someone who could into japanese so things were easy. We mostly went to a few land marks and looked at things inbetween.
Kyoto:
Lots of shrines and temples, they are everywhere. We hiked the full Fushimi Inari shrine. Kyoto is nice for a start since it feels like a light version of other big cities, less crowded places and distances aren't so big that you need to figure out the puplic transport immediately.
Osaka:
We were there only 1 day, saw the castle and ate okonomiyaki. We also stayed at an onsen.
Tokyo:
We were there the most time, you could easily spend 2 weeks in tokyo alone. We went to most big districts (Akiba, Shibuya, Asakusa and so on) and checked out the most important spots. We also went to Reitaisai 11, was amazing. I got a chance to talk to ZUN in very poor japanese together with a random australian guy and went to the /jp/ meetup. Sadly I never saved the picture that was made.
Suwa: Yep it's the place that inspired Suwako and Kanako. It was easy to reach so we went there. Picture is from the Suwa shrine. Was interesting to see a much smaller place aswell.

It was all very interesting, the food, the differences. There is just so much to see.

>Was everything like you expected it or did something surprise you?
Kinda, I knew a few things already. But it's still something completely different when you are there. It surprised me how convenient everything was in a weird way. A bar might be super small, but the toilet is hightech and has a heated seat for example. Also japs get up kinda late, so not many people were around when we got up. Lastly, the sun was stronger than I expected, not really hotter but I got a sunburn really easy.
All in all you will be more positively surprised.

Well, my step-dad is a plane mechanic for a certain airline company. Part of my benefits that I drew from that is free standby flights where the company goes, and after they merged with Delta, I was able to fly to Japan for FREE. I just lost those benefits after turning 24 in november, so the timing was perfect.

After that, the trip came to around $3.5k - $4k total. The most expensive thing was my railpass was $560. After that, a lot of it was lodgings

Tokyo was by far the most expensive. I spent 5 days there both at the start and end of my trip between the time my rail pass was active. Where I stayed was $90 a night but it was also the best hotel, with free breakfast, and it was a quarter mile from Akiba. Outside of Tokyo, everywhere I stayed was roughly $30-50 a night for a similar quality hotel. I stayed in a lot of different types of places though. Hotels, hostels, guest houses, capsules and a REALLY REALLY shitty ryokan.

That's about half of the expenses right there. The other half being food, public transportation, general activities and LOTS souvenirs.

One of the really expensive things I hadn't accounted for was shipping the tons of things that I bought back home. I was pretty much sending off a box full of souvenirs every city I stayed in. Surely, you've bought a single figure shipped from Japan? With SAL, that could be like 10 bucks, right? Now imagine boxes that weigh POUNDS.

Not sure what the 88 shrine circuit is, but unless you are a big shrine fest, don't plan on seeing too many. You come by enough on your daily trips.

About what >>13043052 said concerning lodging.
I stayed most of the time at cheap places. When you are alone it's more expensive than with 2 people since single rooms aren't common in hostels. The tatami room we had in kyoto was like 3500 yen or 25€ per night, the onsen in osaka was around the same. The cheap hostels were around 3000 yen per night or less. The hotel we had near tokyo big sight was 6750 yen per night, so quite a bit, but the hotel was good and had an own convenience store. So if one wants, you can sleep at places rather cheaply. I listed yen prices, because back then the € was at a peak high, so that needs to be kept in mind, also small hostels usually don't accept kredit cards. Generally don't expect to be able to pay with kredit card.

I spent one year in Japan, excluding several shorter trips. I tried doing all the "major events" and activities during my stay.
- Drinking under the cherry blossom
- Look around all the clubs/circles at the university and finally joining one
- Barbecuing and doing fireworks at the river
- Mountain hiking
- Nagashi somen
- Blindfolded watermelon smashing
- Going on tanabata-date with yukata dressed girl
- Going to the beach and screaming "umi da!"
- Fireworks festivals that covered the whole sky
- Staying at several ryokans
- Befriending a chef at an izakaya and visiting hostess and okama bars together
- Visiting "haunted" places at night
- Going to batting centers
- Ordering a Christmas cake and having a Christmas date
- Watching Gaki Tsukai on New Years Eve
- Going to hatsumode

tl;dr: It was just like in my Japanese cartoons

Went last month.

I'm a pretty inexperienced traveler, so I just figured I would hit as many places as possible and figure out what was worth spending time on. I think I ended up spending most of the trip in Akiba.

One thing that surprised me was just how large and busy the city was. I grew up in a US city, so I thought I would feel pretty comfortable, but the scale was just incomparably overwhelming.

I'm pretty antisocial, so it was hard trying to get the experiences I was hoping for. It doesn't help being Asian either, since everyone automatically assumes you speak the language and doesn't really take interest in you until you start speaking.

Had a lot of fun overall and will probably return after I try out some other countries.

Well for one the room was pretty small. Place was called Super Hotel Osaka. It wasn't a hotel with outdoor bath, tatami mat rooms and a bit meal included. It was just a normal hotel with a hotspring bath in the basement.
The one in Suwa also had a basement onsen, but Suwa is known for hotsprings. A good way to experience a hotspring for a budget. We also had them with breakfast included for like 700yen each. Breakfast was nothing special, not too different from western hotels. You wont miss out much on leaving it out and instead eating a bit from a konbini.

>tfw no weeb friends to travel to japan with

I went to japan like 5 or 6 times last year, shit was hella fun, but it would have been a miserable experience without some deep pockets to finance my adventures.

I would have paid an anon or two to join me, but the last two times I did something similar, I ended up with a suicidal maniac, and a large dude who tried to rape me.

I guess I understand how taking a dice roll on 4chan might get you the first one, but really you paid for a dude's trip to Japan with you and he wanted to rape you? Why didn't you just leave him stranded in Japan or something and if you didn't what the hell could he have done if you had done that? If you had to pay for him in the first place there's no way he's be able to make his way back home so he'd basically be fucked right?

When i lived in Florida the local chinese would say "oh fuck, not those goddamned hicks". chinese tourists are the worst, and i use the term loosely, human beings on earth. they manage to out obnoxious the arabs and the australians, and even blow the dutch out of the water on the walking asshole front.

the snot hawking, booger picking like a retarded kid, and blowing their noses on their hands/ holding their thumb on a nostril and blowing out towards other people on purpose was fucking vile.

then they try to haggle for everything everywhere they go, not limited to gas stations, mcdonalds, and attempt to bribe police after parking in weird places like infront of the door of the grocery store, and soliciting girl scouts selling cookies for sex.

and their scratching their asses om their pants/balls like they have a world class case of the crabs was nauseating.

i still cant believe they didnt have a tard wrangler with them. even retards and potato heads in heat act better than that.

this all happened inbetween 2009-2014

Not trolling, telling the truth.

You'll learn that sometimes it's hard to tell. And you've clearly never been to japan, son, to think they don't fucking stare at foreigners. He'll they stare at you if you even look haffu.

There's a chance I'll be going to Japan next year in a scholarship. I will probably stay there for 5~7 years, maybe even more.

Anyway, the scholarship pays 117 thousand yen monthly to help with the living costs; that means rent, food and transportation. That's barely enough to live comfortable.

Since I will have a student visa, I can't work full time. How much can you get working part time? Is it easy to find work as a foreigner? I don't speak much japanese, so I'll be learning as I work/study there.

Was going to say that while you're right flights from the US would probably be in the 4 digits while from AUS would probably be in 3 digits, but upon researching a little, it turns out that it's not nearly as big of a difference as I thought. My mistake.

They don't stare at you because they hate foreigners (for the most part), but because you're an oddity in their homogeneous island nation.

Gonna go hit Akiba between March 10th and 15th.
I haven't been able to take an international trip in the last 15+years, FML.

This is going to be the first time I'm using this trip since I got out of conscription...

I have no idea the last time I posted on /jp/.
It's been years since I used my tripcode.
I also only have less than a 72hr window to post when I get an IP that isn't region blocked.
