Yeah, the question is where to get those BluRays from. I mean, I was just asking out of curiosity, because I see some titles on sukebei only in SD, while they're generally registered in some of the databases as "Hi-Def". And via Google only very few shops offered BluRay, and then the selection was very sparse, which led me to believe digital download and DRM removal is probably the main way of distribution.

Grabbing the stuff from a BluRay would be much less of an issue for me, AnyDVD has been rather reliable up until now.

Sure there's screen capturing, but it necessarily introduces re-encoding which leaves you with less than 99% quality I'm afraid. Of course you can capture losslessly, but you end up with ludicrously large files, larger than an entirely BluRay. You'd have to re-encode those to h264 or something similar afterwards, again incurring quality loss.

You're right though, downsampling that to 720p and you'd still have quite decent quality, just not at full resolution.

I just love that the topic of DRM is just never dropped. Time and time again it's been worked around and they try to come up with more and more restrictive methods to protect themselves, usually at the expense of the paying customer. As time goes on and DRM evolves, I am much less inclined to pay for content, not more.

Yeah, as it happened, I read that thread yesterday, incidentally. I bought one movie from r18.com a couple days ago, it is mind-boggling how restrictive it is. Even going as far as requiring you to use their proprietary video player, holy fuck. Oh, and naturally, it doesn't have any customisability whatsoever, no madVR or really ANY kind of settings.

Yeah I know about OBS, it's a decent freeware program. What I don't like about it is that warnings that it can't record fast enough appear nowhere in the screen, only if you have OBS in focus. That means you might record 40 minutes of footage while OBS shits itself and drops frames like my arthritic grandma hanging up old pictures.

Pretty happy with the way I have it setup now, I just need to dedicate myself one day to try more shit with Avisynth + h265. Just not entirely convinced that capturing directly to h264 will give me best results. If your setup works for you, I'm happy to hear that though.

Here's the problem with Tunebites and programs like that, they won't work either come the 30th. Those programs require you to activate the DRM file in Windows Media Player first since it uses it to play the video to screen record. Come after the 30th, you'll have to use DMM/R18's proprietary player instead in order to authenticate the videos, so you'll need a standalone program for screengrabbing while you play the video in that. Might just be easier to use a capture device hooked up to the A/V output of your computer then.

I'm not well-informed, but I think that type of capturing necessarily goes into a transport stream, and Lagarith (for example) outputs .avi. How much configuration you can have, I'm not sure. Technically, h264 at RF0 is lossless too, it's just much less efficiently compressed than other lossless codecs, if I'm not mistaken. And the question is if the capture devices allow for such options.

There's nothing to it, really. You install Lagarith, then it appears in the codecs you can choose from. You can easily let it process to YUV, processing to RGB means colorspace conversion and takes up even more diskspace anyway. Enable Multithreading if your computer can handle it.

That's pretty much all you need to set it up. But what you need afterwards is a program to help you encode it, because 40 minutes of Lagarith video in 1080p will most likely move in the 70 GB region. I use the most recent TMPGEnc, but that's expensive. Handbrake is a good, free alternative.

Of course you could also choose for Dxtory to use a different codec and directly record to x264. Personally don't like that, but it's entirely valid. I'm afraid I'm not so sure what you're asking for, if you could be more precise, I'd be glad to answer any questions, if I can. The way I got Dxtory, it worked nearly out of the box.

Dude, if it only were that simple. Apparently the DRM downloads a custom DLL which is different for every user, moves the code around and probably much more advanced shit. It's Microsoft, they wouldn't half ass it so it can be broken in an hour.
