Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. having nuclear weapons didn't factor into Japan's decision of surrendering. It had more to do with the fact that they wouldn't be able to fight a two-front war with the soviets. Nuking Japan was Truman's way of showing the world that the U.S. had a huge dick, except the same thing could have been accomplished without killing hundreds of thousands of civilians.
