Zun's tacky drawings aren't even that bad, what are truly terrible are his cryptic character descriptions and hollow personalities. Even his best developed character Reimu is lame and boring, if it weren't for the fandom Gensokyo would be a horrible place.

I actually think that most of the characters have just enough personality.

They have enough personality to have be a character of their own, but there's still room for the viewer to use his/her imagination to further establish more personality and character on the 2hus.
This is what has made the 2hu fandom so huge I think.

This does of course not apply to all the 2hus, but at least most of them.

I actually kinda like the 'hollow' personalities, it's refreshing to have something where not every character is 2deep4u and super complex. It feels like the game isn't so serious/doesn't take itself seriously, if that makes any sense, and I love that because I'm honestly getting tired of super deep dead serious content when I just want to have some fun.

It's also kinda annoying to me when I keep having a character's personality pointed out to me, like "look! this character has a proper personality!! cool right?!". It's not like most real people walk around constantly flaunting every inch of their ~true, real and authentic personality~.

The way you're stating it you're applying the whole "Look! This character has a proper personality!! Cool Right?!" in the exact opposite manner.

Having hardly any character traits is a lazy choice of ZUN so he can let the fans base their personalities of what little he's applied of his own.

I'm not saying characterization is a bad thing in general, if it's done well. Since you said "read a book", yeah I'd obviously expect good (and "deep") characterization in a book if I'm reading the book expecting something serious, mostly realistic and with good quality.

It might be lazy of ZUN to do this, never said it's not, I just personally think it's a nice relief to have something that I don't have to take seriously because it's a bunch of fictional girls who are shooting stuff at each other and being stupid most of the time, and that's all there is to it.

Maybe I should've stated it more clearly that I /personally/ enjoy how 'pointless' (not really the right word but I can't think of anything else right now) the characters are in canon.
