Put what you want to scan on the floor or another flat surface.

You need something to hold the camera above it at a distance where it's far enough that you see the whole 2 pages in the camera when you open the book, but not too far either.

Then you get yourself a lamp or something and point it at your book and make sure it's well lit.

Then you just take a pic, turn the page, take a pic and so on.

If your lighting is good it should work.

If someone missed something that isn't sold at Melon or Tora, you can go there to nagomi. Not that much choice and quite expensive, but they sometimes have some rarer stuff. They do have their shop in Akiba, so you can go there right away if you are in Tokyo atm. It is a little hidden but I explain the location if you want to go.

Here is a quick and shoddy guide. From the main crossing you go left until you get the the club Sega. Go right, right again and then left. The little sign I circled is the only hint that the shop is around. You have to climb the stairwell on the bilding on the left. There is a ninja themed maid cafe/show tingy as well.

Inside it is just a bunch of cumputers and people packiging doujinshi. If you can't speak/read japanese here is how it goes inside: Use one of the computer to browse their website, put things into your basked and press the bell on the counter. Someone will come, not down what you choose and go get them for you.

So how's Akihabara now?

If I checked their websites correctly, Toranoana should be open even now, so I guess whatever they had is gone, but Melonbooks should be closed till the 4th, so I plan on going then.

You're right that MP3 is fine for most practical purposes, but I think a lot of people here are thinking of collecting and preserving the music. I'm saying the same thing as >>14558133, that the general idea of “X format is omnipresent, so why bother using anything else” is a bad one. MP3 offers advantages over WAV. Someday (today, actually) there will be (are) codecs that offer advantages over MP3.

For comparison, the dominant image format of the internet used to be GIF. It was common to compress images by modifying their color palettes. All major image viewers and browsers could display these GIFs, so your argument would have applied. However, nowadays you would scoff at anyone who posted this image: anyone who followed the advice “just use GIF” in 199X would today be in a position of having a library in unacceptable quality today, and having no way of fixing it.

(Actually, WAV was a pretty bad choice for a comparison, because if your library is in WAV you can transcode when needed. With MP3 you can't.)

>> No.14558249

>>14558240
Yet, there are already plenty of codecs that are better than MP3 (Ogg, or AAC, Opus more recently), but you only rarely see them supported outside of dedicated PC music players. AAC has been around forever, yet hardware support is still only present in upper-class devices if at all. What I'm saying is that MP3 will still be around for a long time, since it is ``good enough''.

Besides, I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't want to listen to the stuff I liked 15 years ago anymore, which means that the music I like now isn't exactly that important in another 15 years.

>> No.14558281

>>14558249
MP3 may continue to be around for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it becomes severely outclassed at some point (see the 114KB file size on the ‘compressed’ GIF I posted). As a counterpoint to their support: since I became aware of, for example, Vorbis' existence, I have never used any kind of device or program that played MP3, but didn't play Vorbis files. Perhaps that's because of my desires as a consumer, but those desires are being met.

Tastes changing over 15 years is a very good point, though. If music is (longish-term) disposable to you, it really doesn't make sense to worry about archival formats. I think that attitude is unusual among those who discuss codecs, though.

>> No.14558294

>>14558249
I don't know where you live but I already see a lot of music players being sold in my area which all support AAC, FLAC and OGG formats and even the occasional higher end one which boasts Opus support. In fact I am pretty convinced Opus will eventually take over mp3 in the next decade or so.

I mean good god even the old DS Lite's had built in support for AAC and that was over a decade ago on a cheap budget dedicated gaming console.

>Besides, I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't want to listen to the stuff I liked 15 years ago anymore
Whilst a bulk of music isn't any good to most of us when older I can still find a ton of songs I liked back then I still do because I was heavily into VG music and those kind of compositions don't really age much when done well.

By god is it nigh impossible to find some of those older albums and I'm thankful I had sense to archive some of them when I was younger or buy the CD's when they were still available.
