I really love the JR line tour videos. It's interesting to see all of the small hikyou stations.

Is the line in the video in this post a commuter route, though? That's really the only explanation I can come up with for why the train has to stop at umpteen suburban stations. But it's certainly long enough to be inter-city, and it goes through a long stretch of nothing but country.
If I'm just being ignorant here, please point that out, though. But I wonder how private rail companies can stay profitable while maintaining such a large number of what look to be highly underused stations without government subsidies.

i have no idea myself, i just saw the link one day while clicking back and forth on youtube, and i saw a shinkansen video that was 5 hours long. i put them on every night before bed as my white noise to help me sleep.

i think they would have to be heavily subsidized by hte japanese govt, but since the level of private car ownership is so much lower there, they would desperately need rail service. in one of the last threads, a guy mentioned that the rail companies are deeply in the red without govt subsidies so i think its that too.

amtrak has the same deal, there are hundreds of abandoned stops along the CSX line in the southeast alone.

>> No.15300476

Apart from maybe JR Tokai/Central, they're all being subsidized. Japans rail network would be a lot worse if that wasn't the case.

Rail in Japan is a lot different from rail in the US. You have the big parts of what was Japanese National Railways (JR East, JR West, JR Central, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu, JR Hokkaido) that make up most of the railways in Japan. However, there are a lot of 'third sector' railways (Kashima Rinkai, Sanriku, etc) that are privately owned and mainly tourist oriented but still have a public transport function.

The rail companies are struggling though with the price of Shinkansen tickets being more expensive than plane tickets and it taking longer to get from Tokyo to Sapporo on the Hayabusa than a plane. Also even though (I believe) JR Hokkaido now has a connection to JR East's lines through the Senkan Tunnel they are losing money and they have a pretty bad record for safety.

I model JR East in N scale, hence the knowledge. I also appreciate these threads for scenery ideas.

>> No.15303272

After some quick Googling, it looks like the first appearance of such a barber pole in Japan was in the late 19th century, after the opening of Japan but before WWII.

>In Japan there have been hair dressers referred to as "髪結い" (kamiyui) ever since the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Just one year after the Edo period ended, in 1869 the first Western-style hair salon was opened in Yokohama.

>Two years later, in 1871, a small barber shop in suburban Tokyo called "西洋風髪剪所 (Seiyou Kamihasamisho)" became the first in the country to use the red, white, and blue barber pole. Western hair-styling techniques were being slowly introduced to Japan at the time, and with the adoption of these techniques, the barber poles also became widely used across the country.

Makes sense. Japan was in this wierd period when right after the Restoration they were literally obsessed with anything Western.

I'm saving up for my own trip to Japan. Is there a line that anyone here recommends? Something ideal would start from Tokyo and continue for not more than a day. I'd prefer something that takes me through a good cross-section of urban and rural countryside.

How rural?
Some Japanese people can't even converse well with some inaka.
In general, full on Japanese with keigo is the only way to go. Even if you are fluent, many natives will assume you won't be able to converse with them.

However, travel with the knowledge you have right now. Perfect, trouble free communication shouldn't stop anyone, including you.

there were some crazy as fuck stories on the old bigdaikon forums back in the early 2000's about weird shit happening in the sticks, /x/ soopyness, and shitloads of missing people.

supposedly a town lost a whole class of kids but they found the JET teacher ranting and raving about the devil and monsters dude was in police custody for about a year, before they realized he was totally insane. that's the urban legend that I read anyhow.

>Even if you are fluent, many natives will assume you won't be able to converse with them.

On the contrary, this wasn't my impression at all. When I was out photographing in obscure places in the country, residents would ask me questions rather unreservedly about my equipment and background. Country folk are generally very chit-chatty, and there was always an assumption that I knew Japanese. People in the countryside know standard Japanese just fine and you'll have no problem at all if you're fluent.

Tokyo was really the only place where I had people trying to talk to me in English on a regular basis.

This shit tier mentality isn't any better than jumping out of your window because some cunt breaks into your home.

Not him, but kinda semi-related.

I'm from germany too, and I plan on leaving to Japan because I fucked up my graduation and can't become a teacher here anymore. Well, atleast not in the next 8 years.

I applied to several universities, but they always see that I failed one single course and decline.
I also applied to 26 Kindergartens, 16 Elementary School, all declined to me because they don't want male teachers or caretakers without university degrees. Meanwhile they hire women all day, anyday because reason.
I have hope to retake college in Japan, shooting to become an ALT and from there on maybe even go to university. Well, that as long everything happens according to plan.
A friend, two years ahead of me, fucked up his graduation too, couldn't go to university. Now he is an ALT in Singapore at a private school. Shit worked out for him, so why not for me?

I know I'm really just whining here, but occasionally I just need to let it out, makes me feel better.
