I love making controversial comments anonymously because I always get ad hominem attacks in return. This is one of the reasons why anonymity in BBSes is overrated; if you disagree with someone, you can always picture them as evil beings that came from undesirable places and they don't belong here, so their opinion can be safely ignored. This happens in every single anonymous board I have been to. If I posted that with my trip, you wouldn't be able to dismiss my post like that and you'd actually have to take the time to write a proper retort.

Anonymity really isn't the panacea many believe it is. People claim that in anonymous boards, your posts are judged individually and that's the beauty of it, because it's a fair system where the only thing that matters is what you just posted. What people forget is that, because judging a single opinion without having an individual to pin it to is sometimes impossible for us due to the nature of the subjects being discussed, this method enables readers to build stereotypes in their heads and then attach posts to their fabricated strawmen every time they read something they dislike. It effectively stifles any kind of controversial discussion.

This is why trip users can be so controversial. Even if they hold the regular opinions the majority of the board agrees with most of the time, when they post something you really disagree with, you can't just mentally attach your strawman to that post and let it slide (oh, he's just an idiot that doesn't know any better). No, you're aware that someone that you sometimes agree with and that you consider a "normal board user" thinks differently, and that's when shit hits the fan.

It works the other way around, too. When Arc or 2007 post something dumb, you don't even look twice. You don't have to bother trying to figure out what's the type of person that would post something like that. You already know they're idiots and you don't waste time replying.

Basically, anonymity is a lot more flawed than people think. Ironically, it's great for circlejerking among your own little hivemind, but it's utter shit for anything that dares defying the dictatorial imposed status quo. You'll be instantly dubbed as a troll or newfriend if you try to do so.

And you forget KoG never used a name/trip. Neither does Dawson or any of the other spammers. In fact, the users who cause the most damage don't use a trip or name, because they're perfectly aware people could just start filtering their posts (or even if you don't filter them, you can always ignore them).

Trolling is pretty silly. I used to take part in the whole tripfriend troll business on /a/ about a year ago, but I got bored within a few months. I prefer posting as Anonymous.

Speaking of which, why are the current trolls so damn awful? It seems like nobody even puts effort into it anymore since people feed so easily. Then again, said tripfriends probably samefag their threads to oblivion, so who knows.

Dawson? Arc? Taiko? Bring back the real trolls. Hell, I'd even prefer athens' /r9k/ threads over these bot spammers.

Fact: the word Circlejerk is synonymous with the acronym IRC. On an Anonymous IRC, circlejerking would be virtually impossible. Seriously, how would one circlejerk on an IRC channel (like say) #/jp/ if all of the users on said channel shared the same identity?
