I don't know much about hate, but the Nips seem to love abusing her a lot.

I've noticed that compared to other characters (in the recent years at least), she has gotten a surprising amount of ryona, scat, guro and bestiality (usually with insects) art and doujins.

I don't like Sumireko but I think it's going to far to say that she's a typical OC character being played straight.

Her first contact with Gensokyo ends in her trying to kill herself in an attempted murder-suicide after the population bands together to spurn her- and she gets all attached to the one person to show her genuine kindness.

Her real world life, unlike many of these stories, is made tangibly worse by her magical adventures.

In the manga, her real world science knowledge is met with indifference or mild interest at best. She has managed to cause nothing but trouble for those she has hung out with (person-swapping issues, being possessed by dreams, etc)

It's like another take on Sanae, but instead of integrating with Gensokyo it's an example of how regular people just couldn't handle living there even with superpowers.

From my perspective that seems like the whole point of Sumireko's character is that she's a self-insert, but more or less realistic in that even if you (you) got into Gensokyo, things probably wouldn't be any better than they are now for you. That's denying the self-insert OC part of her character where she's supposed to have some sort of special unique ability (which is pretty much the focal point of her backstory) and finds other people like herself. Only here those people either don't care very much or find her annoying.

It seemed to me that everyone is rather annoyed or disinterested in her anyway unless I'm missing something.


The character is rather clearly ZUN taking a jab at certain fans and those types of people.
Which is what I meant by realistic in that sense, the whole point of Sumireko is realistically defying those kinds of fantasies.Her being powerless wouldn't work with the clear "unique main character" idea in her design.

The only way someone could think Sumireko's appearance is sudden is someone who missed (or misinterpreted) the conversation between Kasen and Rinnosuke, where it is clearly spelled out that Kasen will be meeting Sumireko.
Does Kasen really need her of all people? Maybe not, but considering that she has received her help once in the past, then it makes sense that Kasen would seek her out again.

However, from a storytelling point, it was meant to be a surprise to us as much as it is a surprise to Reimu.
Could she do anything else besides the LOL RANDOM UFO? Yes, maybe, but the point of that scene still won't change. Reimu need to get back on her feet, and Sumireko/Kasen did just that.
