I like the reforge system since it feels like an improvement from IV's reforges and U's grimoires.
I just wish you could extract the reforge skill though, since some neat skills become useless anyway because their weapon has bad stats.

As a Smoke Botanist I'm having trouble because so far I had a staff crafted from the scorpion FOE so I could do damage with its lighting skill, but now I had to upgrade since the stats of the weapon couldn't keep up, so my character can't do quick cheap damage anymore.

That would be incredibly overpowered and would let players attach shit like the gorgon arrow's high-chance petrify to endgame equipment. Unique weapon enchantments makes older stuff worth holding onto in a series where almost everything is an upgrade rather than a sidegrade.

Yeah same. I picked up EO Untold 2 on sale before I even knew what the series was. Map drawing tickles the OCD part of my brain, it's so satisfying to confirm and draw every little wall and tile

The untolds have a lot of streamlining and the grimore system is really badly-done and obviously just there to complement the story mode, which rubbed a lot of older players the wrong way since EO was originally a very traditional dungeon-crawler. The stiff challenge of the two remakes was nice though, and mitigated the gripes a bit. EOV is too easy, really. Since each game has a different set of classes being new isn't going to be much of an issue. EO was never actually unforgiving or particularly brutal, it just didn't hold the player's hand like the JRPGs many DS owners have been familiar with.

The DLC is divided in various packages, the last one, with Gunner, should come out on November 3rd.
If you have a hacked 3DS you can already get them all, just check the /vg/ thread. I advise buying the game if you like it, but I know the DLC is overpriced so that one is up to you.

The problem with grimoires is that they give too much power to the player and they're very grindy. So the final parts of the game, specially story mode, really want you to spend hours finding specific grimoires.
I dropped EOU when I got to Etreant in fact.

Unpopular opinion, but the battles in Etrian Odyssey are the worst part of the series. Everything else is high quality for the most part, but the fact that so many skills and classes suck makes most fights a chore. If it weren't for the excitement of exploring and mapping new stratums, as well at the amazing music, I would have dropped the series after 1.

Atlus have a really big problem when it comes to RPG combat. SMT has similar issues.

I just can't see a better implementation of straight up turn based battle than EO. I had a poor view of RPGs for a long time because I had only played FF titles and the combat in those is genuine garbage. The only thing I can honestly consider better than EO is Super Mario RPG style battles but that's almost an entirely different genre.

by the fourth game there is a decent enough balance. You're not punished for picking specific classes since none of them are useless, instead you're rewarded with complete domination of the enemies when your classes have good synergy. The system is easier than the previous games, but it's more enjoyable overall.

Combat in traditional RPGs in general is a chore to people who don't enjoy slow, meticulous fights that require planning to succeed in. It's a feature of the genre, and despite more accessible gameplay and better penetration into the public market, most action RPGs just can't really capture the same feeling. EO is an above average dungeon-crawler in general, and a fantastic one compared to the other console options. If the thought of the party optimization and fights don't already make you excited it's probably just not for you.
