I go to NND and check Futaba once in a while but since I don't understand Japanese I don't get much of it. What's the level of discussion like over there?

It depends on what boards you visit.

I mostly go on the slow ones, like the bug board and they are pretty friendly with some comfy discussion. The big ones, like the video games and anime boards are about the same level as you see in here, but with less politics thrown in.

There are also the designated shit posting boards, where they take a board and "flip" the concept to be based around the original intent of the board it's based on.
Think of how /bant/ is /int/ but only with the shitpost.

Overall the site is slower than 4chan, they block non jp ips from posting there, so I think that discourages most people. Foreigners are usually met with "yankee go home" and they are pretty quick to spot shoddy grammar.

It's better than this place for sure. They have memes but they don't tend to go to meta levels with them like this place does, and actual discussion is also possible. Also much less of the kind of cancerous template posting that /a/ consists of 90% of the time now. The average age is much higher there for sure.

I also go to 2ch but at least the boards I've gone to are considerably worse due to all kinds of worthless spam and shitposting. Ironically news4vip has the least offensive fgo general on that site.

Like every language, it depends on what community circles you're following. Though the percentage is considerably less, there's plenty of jp twitter userbase thats as asinine as english twitter.

Actually, looking at my original post, i guess its dawned on me how little of the english internet I use anymore. Even /jp/, pretty much the only board I frequent anymore, I visit very rarely.

Its a weird feeling.

Niconico is shit, even Japs agree and that's why it's dead now. They've moved entirely to Youtube. If it's for old 2hu memes and shit then you can find that there too, niconico has nothing to offer except live streaming, and even then niconico is outdone by Youtube and LINE is terms of sheer video quality and traffic.

I use youtube and nicovideo pretty much equally. Certain things are just experienced better with danmaku comments, like 634 videos (as stupid and childish as they are, they're my guilty pleasure). Also for as dead nicovideo is, there's still plenty of new content being uploaded. Its rather active for being mostly written off, although everyone involved really is delaying the inevitable at this point.

I'm not the best person to ask for any kind of visitation loop since I don't use the net that way, but if you're still bouncing off of what you're seeing, you can use youtube and nicovideo to look up your various interests and see the author, group, or circle affiliated sites and forums. You're bound to find a community you can enjoy.

I guess you could blame the 2006 moe import explosion in the US for that (assuming that's where you're from). Whatever bad eggs people met soured people's impressions, and then that got filtered through the internet.

To be honest, Japanese internet is pretty boring. It's still better than the cancer that is its english-speaking counterpart, but there's not much going on. I'm also not fluent in Japanese yet so it takes too much effort to navigate it. I go to 2ch and futaba from time to time, but otherwise I mostly stay on /jp/.

futaba's may /b/ seems kind of shitty... it reminds me of current 4chan /b/. It seems like most other boards on the site are pretty slow.

news4vip gives me those old internet feelings. I don't see a lot of spam there unlike the other boards on the site. the "live" boards are really popular but I don't get them at all, my japanese isn't that good. And I guess it's not even 2ch any more, it's 5ch. The owner is even sketchier than hiro.

First correction, gachimuchi is now far from exclusive nicovideo. It might take time to find under the ever growing pile of obnoxious newfound western audience, but both japanese and western users continue the tradition on youtube.

With that out of the way, its probably easier to say what content has mostly migrated almost entirely from nico to youtube. Blogs, voiced personality driven gaming, anything operating under monetization, livestreaming, camera/video roll, etc.

What's remaining of new original video on nico is heavily 音MAD related (especially since so much is being churned out thanks to unprecedented creator booms), although there is plenty of other stuff hidden away on the site.

I don't know whether I'd so far call it its golden age, but its definately a shell of its former self from 8 years ago.

My only real recommendation is to trawl the tag lists and source trees of videos, because there's just so many authors out there. If you want something 音MAD specific, users 四角 and なんぞこれ are both good video maker and have pretty exhaustive my lists. If you want to start off with newbiebait, look up remmuh.

I don't think I can stand most Japanese communities. They tend to be free of western bullshit, but they talk about the same 20 topics day in and day out it gets boring as hell. (女さん（笑）、韓国人、中国人、anime-of-the-day、gatcha-of-the-day、海外の反応、〇〇で打線組んでみた、ワイ〇〇△ｗｗｗ、totally-happened stories、thinking some-random-urban-legend-from 5 years ago on English facebook is real) The most I can handle is matome-blogs lately, but the ones I'm following have kinda been getting even worse these last few years. (At least every other article isn't about Korea anymore, I guess)

Twitter, Nicovideo, Pixiv. Mostly Twitter since the people I follow on the other two sites also issue Twitter updates, but I still check on daily rankings and my favorite tags. On Twitter I follow a mix of anime industry stuff (VAs, corporate accounts, matome blogs) and creators (doujin circles, MMD animators, ボイロ実況者).

As time goes on I keep adding more follows but the feed is starting to accelerate past the point where I can actually keep up to date with everything. The fact that I'm barred from participating in 2ch/2chan conversations without going through more trouble than I would like puts me off reading them.
