I don't like the major changes so I don't plan on using it, but if you modded the game to be more fun for yourself, more power to you. There are some things I have to comment on, however:

>Monsters can always use gauge attacks. I've got no idea why only level 130 or higher monsters would be able to do so
Very likely to make normal easier and challenge modes harder, no?

>it could mean losing a sentient weapon that took hundreds of hours to level
Pretty sure you can use the little sister quest to also recover miracles and godlies such as those.

>has been replaced with a different bad dream that greatly increases ether corruption
I feel like that changes game balance more than you think.

>the "re-enable savescumming" tweak doesn't do it for me, because it means that any accidental slip on the F2 key reloads the game from the last save. And there is no confirmation. Again, why would anyone design a game like that???
The game's design is that it saves automatically every so often, so that wouldn't happen. I don't like how that Custom option turns auto-saving after sleeping (among other occasions) off either, and even asked them to undo that but was rejected, but don't confuse the base game's design with changes made by the Custom team.

>I asked the developers about it once and they said "nah the sound must be enough".
I saw that and I say that maybe you should take the matter directly to Ano instead of Custom. Maybe he'll agree.

>"rare" drops can also generate right after starting the game, not only after it was running for 10 minutes
Common misconception. The rare drop trigger does not turn off if you close the game properly. That is, for everyone who don't savescum, the trigger stays on indefinitely after the first 10 minutes on the very first time they play.
You should also keep in mind that the increase in rare drops has only affected those that were already relatively common (original rate of 1 in 200 or more often); notice how people only mention having happy beds and unknown shells in surplus. The truly rare stuff didn't get a rate increase and is still rare.
The new stardust and weapon crafting elements are also based on the player finding frequent rares, and lowering rates is going to break them.

>Curased coffins are spelled correctly again (hint: "curased coffin" is the correct spelling). Same for Yerles conbat planes and Snail thr android rider.
>It just has that unique ring to it, IMHO. And I "grew up" with the version where they were spelled that way and really liked those spellings, so "fixing" them feels like an obvious regression to me. Therefore I decided to keep the Engrish charm of the game that makes it stand out compared to most other games.
That's retarded.

Nothing fancy, just a basic "if <no buff>, then <buff self>", get into (& stay at) range 2 for optimal crossbow damage, and keep attacking after all that. Great thing about custom too is you can teach spells; in my case, Attribute Shield so that's less resist gear I need to worry about scrounging up for them.
>>18029962
Slow has a chance of not being applied, and her spamming slow trying to get it to apply is less turns spent attacking. I might eventually get a dedicated debuff spell pet though; maybe the Exile? On that note, anyone know if Exile loses their multicast ability if you use custom AI for them?

In dwarf fortress you can open up museum or artificats and a tavern for adventurers to visit your fortress.

If you like your shit enough they'll petion for citizenship.

The games used to have economies in fort mode, but I think toady axed that since it was legit broken(Dwarves couldn't afford food and starved because by the time your fort could establish an economy all the chefs would make expensive masterwork dishes that no one could afford to eat).

Oh, you can make zoo's in DF too as well as libraries that will attract scholars and stuff too.

And DF does have the trading depot, which is basically a shop where you trade goods you've made for other goods caravans bring in. The masterwork Dwarf Fortress human faction specializes in making hops to buy and sell help. The Orc faction in the mod has a similar system involving buying and selling slaves. This is all fort mode though.

What kinds of characters are most fun to play solo? I already figured that melee with support magic is probably the most involved playstyle, as ranged and magic users tended to devolve into spamming f/some spell to clear rooms. I like to play fairies (last character was a fairy caster, but my pets made Zeome so easy I wanted to restart solo), but that basically limits my weapon options to dual wielding daggers. Then there's the problem of finding a good PCC to match the character.

A guide on proper blackjack strategy, Elona style:

1. I'm going to assume all you want is the cure corruption potion. Frankly most other rewards are lackluster. At 8 wins or so you get a potion of potential, but desu it's too rare to matter, if you want potential you should just buy it from the magic shop after investing.

2. always play on lucky days. I'm going to assume you do this for the rest of the guide.

3. take a look at House's revealed card. Add 10. This is the number you're trying to beat.

4. stay on 18+. This is absurdly high in normal blackjack, but here with the luck redraws it's not so bad.

5. if you have 100+ dexterity, cheat when you need to. Note that the difficulty goes up for consecutive cheats, and it's never at 100% even if you have 2k dex. You can cast Hero before playing to get some extra dex.

6. bet 1 chip. 5 chip with surrenders isn't as good, I think.

7. if you get exactly 4 wins, cash out, and don't get a potion of cure corruption, change to a different table. There's a 1/3 or so chance of this happening per table, so just switch when you notice.

Witch better dps? Not only does a witch split her attention between magic and melee, lowering the rate at which relevant skills level (so a valkyrie will always deal more damage in melee), she also starts with a low casting and will have to do major training in order for her magic damage to catch up to the melee damage she already had. But with the same amount of training, the valk could do even more damage. Crowd control yes, especially by teaching more spells, but dedicated caster pets would be better at that. Witch can fill more roles but doesn't excel at them like a specialist.

>> No.18036179

>>18036148
physical damage is inferior to magical damage, since armor exists. also, raw damage is part of the crowd control thing. a witch can kill whichever critter in her sight, valkyrie has to close in on it to kill it. by the time valkyrie has closed in to deal her resisted physical damage, witch could cast 2-3 crystal spears and even if none of those catches more than one enemy, over all she wins the dps.

>> No.18036221

Incorrect due to the low initial casting. When I changed my little girl into a witch, she was doing 80 damage with her spears while she did thousands with her sword. Now let's say it takes 10 hours to train her spears so they also do 1000 damage. If you had spent those hours on her melee, she'd have multiplied her damage several times over. What you're saying would only apply if upon evolving, her casting was at a level that even remotely approached her melee. Also she and her enemies will always close into melee, and she will not cast spears that often unless you change her AI. So a large portion of the time she will do subpar melee with a lower skill level due to time spent playing catchup for her magic.

>> No.18036361

>>18036221
since when does casting affect damage from spells ? well, its correct that after you spent your gametime with her basic form her melee related stats will be greater while stats lke mag, assuming you didnt give her fruits any time she got hungry, would be lower, but that only assuming. if you bought 2 little girls at the slave market, gave them both plenty gifts and evolved on lvl 1, the one turned witch will be the stronger one. and in the long run, if you made a copy of your current little girl and evolve each twin difrently, the witch will win out simply because she will be using crystal spear much more often than valky using melee.

on a side note, mixed attackers should use throwing rather than bows or guns since both melee and throwing rely and train tactics.

Enemies have magic resist that raises at a constant rate as enemies level too, so it's not like magic bypasses that unless you're at very low levels where most enemies don't have resists (in which case discussion is moot). About closing in, that's why melee pets can really use shadowstep from Leold.

By the time all skills are at the cap you will be right, because a mage will simply be hitting more enemies more times per combat. But melee multi-hits are also a thing and last I heard martial arts reigns supreme with timestop twohanders behind, making them the best for single targets.

shadow step isn't used as often as one would like, ,agic damage supress everything melee besides MA, yet MA isn't that great early on either, and is still not as usefull as aoe attacks for pets. if you kill an enemy in a single turn and aoe kills everything ina single turn- not cuz its as strong as meelee but because melee is overkill than aoe is overall doing more damage.

>> No.18036574

>>18036524
That's true, that logic is universal in this game. As long as you put in enough time, any pet with attack type can defeat anything so it's really a matter of hitting as many enemies as possible at once. However as you get to mid level dungeons and later the void, you will start bumping into more and more enemies that take a hefty beating to kill and only get stronger.

Really the main point of the discussion is 1: Switching over from one attack type to another requires you to train from the ground up making the pet weaker than they would have been if they had stuck with a single thing
2: Most players stick with the little girl until they find their first heart, so she will have high melee skills and stats and low magic and casting, making point 1 a problem for the witch

>> No.18036625

>>18036574
point 2 is kinda depends.
1. evo heart can be turned into another heart so players can go that path as soon as they get heart, and magic heart from fort of chaos isn't that hard to acuire.
2. str will build up if she gets to kill alot, sure, but some players don't really let their pets much time to display their skills. if you give her a diet of fruits and candies, give her control magic to better survive your own AoE spells or even throwing random potions on her and her mag stat is trained. you can even (magic) kiss her for rp porpuses. if your little girl doesn't get to polish her combat skills because either you or the rest of your pets are taking all the action, a chearing littler girl might actually be a wiser choice than a charging valkyrie that isn't cheering as much- which is why you might be getting a littler girl.

i guess that when facinga single powerfull enemy, valkyries will bring it down faster than witches.

For those who don't use Custom AI, when you teach your pet special actions with Leold and they don't seem to use them, lower their movement chance (also at Leold). When in combat they will usually move towards ideal range and then use innate abilities/attack. However if they don't move, they will roll for an ability (including new ones). So basically if you reduce movement chance to 30% on a little girl you only gave shadowstep, 30% of the time she will walk towards her target, and the other 70% she will shadowstep towards it if she can. My axeman pet had movement at 100% and thus never used it, now he is shadowstepping all over the place.

Magic, two hand, and MA can hit for 2 million or more damage deep in the void rather consistently. Dual wield on a normal two hand person can reach those numbers but is very inconsistent about it. Normally the damage is lower than 2 million. The problem with dual wield is that it is very dependent on whether you proc your invokes whether it be time stop or some other sort of invoke like gravity sphere or darkness bolt. If you don't proc them your damage is really going to suffer for it. A multihanded mutant however can get around this by upping their chances of procing stuff due to the amount of hits it can do so dual wield shines with them.

Yerleswood is a bastard.
Thankfully he has only melee attacks, so abusing emergency evasion on top of your usual layer of buffs really helps.
The real problem is that the fucker builds rapidly builds meter. Yerleswood's meter release attacks don't give a shit about DV/PV and will almost always send you into crit health if not outright kill you, so don't forget to manage his meter appropriately.
Yerleswood's melee hits (and meter releases) also get hugely boosted by Boost, which means that he'll be shitting heavy damage whenever he lands a hit. Remove Boost with megid flame or that one buff remover item (looks like an orange rectangle) to prevent him from taking a big shit.
Yerleswood's biggest weakness is that he's a slow fat fuck with only 350 speed (further boosted by Boost). Use every speed buff (speed spell, lulwy's trick, gamma core, etc.) you can to stay on top on him and layer damage. Outspeeding Yerleswood also gives you more breathing room to heal and reapply buffs.

Good luck, Yerleswood ain't easy.

Stick with one element. I've mixed elements before and realized it was dumb, your combat log just gets filled with tiny amounts of damage as they all get resisted. With all upgrades stacked on one element however, the damage multiplies and gets way higher than even that of the weapon itself.

>> No.18038637

>>18038579
Pressure should be a last resort. Abuse the fuck out of Disturbance to keep his meter below 100%.
IIRC, he can't pull out the big dick instant death meter release if he's not at 100% or more, so you can stall his meter to be just under 100% so he can't take a shit.
With Disturbance, you usually want to use a 100% bar Disturbance to take a big chunk out of his bar, then use smaller 30% - 40% Disturbances to keep his bar manageable.
Ohuda/Megid Flame is very important, you want Boost off the fat fuck ASAP whenever it shows up. An unboosted meter attack is dangerous, but a boosted meter attack is almost always lethal.
Again, I can't stress enough the importance of mana rods. Magic is your shield, your biggest source of utility, and your main source of damage in this fight. If you go into the fight without rods, you WILL run out of momentum and Yerleswood will start raping your team.
This is just personal preference, but I feel like barrier might be a bad choice for this fight. You can easily come back from a bad hit to full HP with a well leveled healing spell (Cure of Jua, healing rain, etc.), but replenishing your mana to full MP after taking a heavy hit to your mana bar is much more difficult. Like I said though, that's just personal preference. Changing AP traits is a big hassle, so don't feel as though you have to do it just to beat a specific boss.

The reward for beating Yerleswood is pretty nice, so nail that fucker as soon as you can.

>> No.18038665

>>18038629
That makes sense. Nerve is fine to stick to, right? Magic is good in early game and I've heard nerve is good later, but by then I'll probably have moved onto a better weapon.
Having to wait an entire year to add more nerve (if I understand the way living weapons work now) would be silly though, so I guess I should go for the +STR or +pierce chance for now?

>> No.18038689

>>18038665
You don't always have to wait a year, you can +enchant to change the selection to the next ''in the list'', which goes through all of them and loops around. You can only do that a limited number of times though unless you somehow disenchant, so if you're doing that better level it all the way to Lv10 in that month or be forced to wait anyway.

I wouldn't recommend stats like STR, they mean less the further you get. I'm not sure how the pierce stacks up against just more elemental damage, since it's an invoke that only has a chance of activating giving you one good hit.

I never really paid attention to what is happening during party time quests, mostly just staring at my character everytime.
I did not notice what exactly was happening until now
>people are literally eating or drinking anything, including things that is downright harmful
>and die to it
>like seriously why are people chugging sulphuric bottles and motolovs
>isn't lomias supposed to be running?
>people barf and starve to death
and these kinds of parties are supposedly held everyday in palmina?

Irreversible, RNG limbs are frankly awful design in a game where you sink as much time into your character as in Elona, even if the idea of a nonstandard limbs player race is a good one. Messy interactions with the body modification NPCs too, like Gavela who can give you an absolute shitload of limbs but only if you beeline the main quest at the lowest level possible, or Icolle who will irreversibly ruin your character for the low cost of 1 life. Also having a halfway decent mutant is practically considered cheating.

But really I think it ultimately boils down to one thing: People playing Elona like to have a plan for their character, and being a Mutant takes away that luxury.

>> No.18040110

>>18040090
part of the fun in elona is how chaotic it is, and mutants are the most chaotic races.

>> No.18040136

>>18040110
They're not chaotic enough, really. Mutants are way too permanent, permanent to the point that when you roll a third neck at level 9 you know you're going to be stuck with that garbage for the rest of a potentially hundreds of hours long game, unless you reroll or savescum or character edit. If they worked like a Jiyva character in DCSS, where nothing is permanent and their bodies never stop changing, I think they'd be much better.

The first one of any given slot is generally good because there are usual key utilities to be derived through that slot, or just like one really good item you may have found that happens to go there. Overall though utilities are something you can switch between, and neck slot is statistically one of the weakest by a wide margin. One neck is fine or even good, a second neck is questionable, a third neck and you're basically taking a loss on the complicated body penalty as a race that has no benefits other than its slots.

>> No.18040235

>>18040167
>>18040192
The point isn't even whether it's good or not though, it's the simple fact that you're stuck with it forever. Having a bunch of necks could and probably is very cool, but having a bunch of necks while you have, say, no boots cloak or ring is probably going to get old.

If I were to make one change to mutants, I'd just give them a dream every week that causes them to gain one random new limb and lose their oldest limb. This way you never have to worry about being "stuck" with a certain set of limbs, and because it's a dream you even have the option of preserving a combination of limbs you like at the cost of not sleeping.

I'd also probably get rid of complicated body for mutants but that's a different issue issue.

>> No.18043680

>>18043507
Spellcasters arguably care a lot less about their slot composition anyway, but that's admittedly not something I took into account. Sleep isn't central to the idea though, it's just what came to mind for an elegant and code-light implementation because it simply packaged the entire thing into a different clock that conveniently mutant NPCs don't care about.

That said, keeping a body should probably be rather costly anyway because having a not awful set of slots AND more slots than usual is a very big advantage. The goal isn't just to make high-end bodies achievable, it's also to make playing with an imperfect body less awful (because it won't be awful all the time).

Then again maybe an NPC that will just reroll all your mutation slots for a bunch of cure corruptions or some other rare item is better. Slightly adjusting your equipment loadout every few days would probably get very tedious.

Doing a lot of quests is pretty much the right way to play early on. Your progress will very quickly screech to a halt unless you grind quests for both money to pump into magic shops and plat for skills/potential.

>> No.18046411

>>18046371
It's intended. Updating items does not grant the innate attributes other than pierce/hit/dmg/pv/dv but instead carries over what it had. So an aurora ring turned into a speed ring won't suddenly get speed but will still protect against weather. However if you use the resulting equipment in the creation recipe the resultant items will have the innate attributes the type usually has. So you can make this pair of boots into two others (rare items give 2 instead of 3) that do increase travel speed.

The reason you want to equip update is to either get item types you didn't have to use in creation, or to get better offensive or defensive stats.

To reiterate: from the new type it only gets pierce, hit, damage, pv and dv. It's useful for changing weapons into better classes (long sword into lightsabre which will get the 100% pierce), ammo into a different type, an engagement amulet into a talisman so you can freely give and take from pets, or changing say a godly robe into a bulletproof jacket so its defense isn't shit. But if you want the innate abilities the new type would have had, you have to create it.

Might be handy to know, you can add ''it speeds up your travel progress #####'' to a good/great ring (say a non-miracle aurora or speed ring) with a Garok's hammer to replace 7LB.

The subgenre is only pointless when people like you start including anything they want in it. Using the actual definition it's perfectly utilitarian and describes a specific set of games. Namely games that share the common gameplay mechanics with the cornerstones of the genre.

Permadeath and randomization are not enough to make a genre, much like playing the role of a character is not enough to make an RPG. There is an overwhelming amount of games that feature both. Why there's another meaningless term, RPG.

But the weight of an opinion isn't based on how many people hold it, which is why you'd sooner listen to one doctor tell you about your body than a hundred janitors. On this topic, the opinion of the devs that actually made ADOM, NetHack, the *bands, Stone Soup, and Rogue (all turn+grid-based) and those that play them, hold more weight than you and IGN.

At its core, this is another pointless struggle of an evolving language, where people unquestionably accept everything they are given when first introduced to something and then vehemently oppose any subsequent changes. That flowchart that I brought up before even goes to dismiss the concession terms like "roguelite" that >>18047825 mentions. What is the reason here? I fucking hate this meme. You don't become a first-person shooter by having "first-person shooter elements", you become one by being in first person and shooting things. It's a matter of core game mechanics, not superficial similarities.

Permadeath is not a core game mechanic, and frankly isn't even terribly well-defined as a mechanic (is running out of lives in mario permadeath?) and procgen is just a method of content generation rather than a game mechanic. Turn-based gameplay and controlling only a single player character, however, is centrally-defining to gameplay. Ergo, being turn-based has always been a better defining factor than permadeath or procgen.

The confusion over the term has nothing to do with "evolving language" and everything to do with greedy fucking indie developers who wanted to appropriate the history cultivated over many years largely for free. They should be glad they even get to call themselves the overtly derogatory term "roguelite", rather than "opportunistic douchebag's game".

Yet you define "roguelike" by listing superficial elements that they share, except then you also dismiss the most prominent ones when other games decide to feature them.

>Turn-based gameplay and controlling only a single player character, however, is centrally-defining to gameplay. Ergo, being turn-based has always been a better defining factor than permadeath or procgen
Turn-based with grid movement, direct control over one character, indirectly controlled minions, and no poorly-defined mechanics like permadeath and procedural generation - Fallout is now as much of a roguelike as One Way Heroics and even Angband.

And this has everything to do with "evolving language", and specifically with the fact that each person chooses a different point on the path of its evolution where everything must stop once and for all. For example, it's okay for roguelikes to be a subgenre of RPGs because of superficial elements like stats, levels, equipment, experience and monsters lifted straight from a Dungeons and Dragons monster manual, even though they have nothing to do with role playing. But try to include "RTS elements" into your clicking simulator, and it's somehow still a MOBA and not a subgenre of RTS.

Nice turn-based game, dumbass.

>it's okay for roguelikes to be a subgenre of RPGs because of superficial elements like stats, levels, equipment, experience and monsters lifted straight from a Dungeons and Dragons monster manual
There are lots of roguelikes that lack the majority of those. You can arguably make a roguelike with none of them even if it hasn't been done due to frankly not being fun. Stats =/= RPGs.

>And this has everything to do with "evolving language"
Every single semantics issue in existence is, by definition, having to do with "evolving language". That doesn't make it the core issue nor does it make people who use it as an excuse anything but intellectually-dishonest hipsters who want to imply progress to make their position seem more desirable.

>MOBA
Are you referring to ASSFAGGOTS, which literally is an RTS derivative? I can't tell what you're specifically talking about when you use the most retarded genre designation ever created.

Seal ability costs 20 AP which is absolutely nothing, but seals all special actions.
If you're not using any special actions besides charge attack on Anubis (insult, provoke, whatever), there's no downside to using seal ability.
If you are using other special actions besides charge attack, download Elona+ Custom and use custom AI.

Whoever thought that charge attack was a great addition to a pet with 30 base HP should be shot in the back of the head.

That i'm fine with. Mobas can be tagged as RTS, because they are somewhat similar. But to say Dota 2 is an RTS is wrong. It has RTS elements, it has RPG elements, but it isn't exactly either of them.

The problem arises when people say they ARE these things. And another problem arises is when i'm looking for RTS games, and a whole bunch of Mobas, gachas, and hero shooters flood the results in place of real RTS games.

How bad of an idea is it to build my character to be a mount? Is it possible to get to a point where your own speed penalty is gone or at least not horrible?

Never heard of anyone trying to be a dedicated mount. Might as well give it a try.

>> No.18048911

>>18048888
There's one very big problem that I need to address though. Even though you take the mount movement penalty, you are still the one who does the moving. Supposedly getting better at riding (and probably becoming an easier mount by getting more strength) helps mitigate this, but I haven't found any documentation on what lengths you have to go to get your speed penalty to a tolerable level.

>> No.18048928

>>18048886
it is possible to comletly nullify speed loss but i don't know the relevant formula.
I do know however, that you are less likely to lose speed if you are not that fast. ie, the higher the speed the higher the chance your speed would be tramendlously lowered.

>> No.18048980

>>18048928
If riding skill is a factor then str:speed is by extension a factor, since mount difficulty is almost entirely decided just by str:speed ratio. So in theory the biggest thing you need to do until your rider gets a decent riding skill is pump STR in relation to speed.

Hopefully it's that simple, anyway.
