I decide to watch Kenja no Ai first. Finished them even though the last episode lost their sound and couldn't find any that has the sound.

Yeah, it's very artistic and good. Many great shots and the acting wasn't that bad. Pace is so slow but the flashback and reasoning of the main antagonist somewhat wasn't being elaborated well, happens often with novel adaptation serial. Something is missing here and there.

>dunno if i would really recommend it though.

Totally understand this. Would like to read the book if it gets translated though.

Couldn't she have fucking dyed her hair blonde so she actually looked like the god damn anime/manga character? Good show otherwise though.

>> No.18215862

>>18212739
Haven't seen this so can't truly answer, but did her playing blonde play a part in the original (foreigner/yankee/some kind of fashion etc.)? Because if it didn't then it would really stand out in the live action. In anime/manga people often have oddly colored hair so the characters will be easier to distinguish, which is not really needed in live action. Also lookup some anime adaptations that keep the hairstyles of original, and see how weird they look in these wigs.

Wearing a wig is not always a bad thing.
Gakky wearing a wig for Okitegami Kyoko looks awkward at first but you'll get used to it if you understand the character and whatnot it's Gakky's skill that actually makes such a complex character written by Nisio looks believable in 3D.

Like I said if it's important to the character it's not a bad thing. But if it's just a random trait that happens in anime because of reasons mentioned before, it is not worth it to have it in live action cause it would stand out a lot in it. For example in "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" the main character is a haafu, and him being blonde is the reason why people take him for a yankee and he doesn't have friends. Omitting hair color in this would break the story, so using a wig here is not a problem.

Are there any fans here for the Film Adaption of Ping Pong? I saw this film immediately after the Anime came out and I've loved it ever since. Surprisingly it was really difficult to get a hold of the film for a solid year online after the anime had came out. In some ways I actually think that it translated the manga better than the anime, and you can even see influence on the Anime's part by that of the movie!

The performances were great all around, larger than life without coming off as a cheese fest as I feel most live adaptions do. Another great live adaption of Taiyou Matsumoto's work is Blue Spring. I don't consider this film as polished, but as far as delinquent films go it's pretty damn good.

Sadly the subbing scene of dramas doesn't function the way the anime one does. Almost all new anime is subbed the same day it comes out (regular tv series, specials and movies can take longer, but still most of them end up subbed). Whereas in drama scene most end up unsubbed, and even if they do they can take months between episodes. But it's directly related to popularity, so not much can be done about it. That's one of the reasons I have started to learn Japanese (though I am still very poor at it).

From what I have seen and can remember at the moment that kind of fits your description:

A high school romance movie, but rather unusual: Kanseitou.

Take place in high schools and have romance in them, but the setting is not really realistic (Yankee schools, super elite schools etc.) and it's closer to a comedy than a proper romance: Koe Koi, Hana Yori Dango, Ouran High School Host Club, Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou, High School Debut.

Other than that you might check out some Asa-Doras (Ama-chan Hiyokko etc), they are usually about young people (though not always, and since they are long they can extend after high school), but romance is only a part of them and that's a lot of episodes.

I think the reason it might be difficult to find a proper romance about high schoolers without the terminal illness, is that the relationships among youth are usually not very serious. Adding terminal illness elevates them to the level of rather literal "till death do us apart".

I just discovered a new show called "Rikukaikuu Chikyuseifusurunande". It is a travel-variety show hosted by Kotoge of duo Viking.

One of challenges they are having is that they sent Kotoge's partner Nishimura on an ultra-budget trip where he can only earn money for himself and crews by day-to-day Instagram picture posts; 0.1 yen per "like".

So far Nishimura was in Thailand and Taiwan. Now he is in Mongolia.

I liked Boku no Ita Jikan. It's about a dude with ALS, he falls in love with a girl but his body is slowly deteriorating and he doesn't want her to see what happens to he starts to shun her. Also 37.5°C no Namida, it's about a woman who works a job caring for sick kids while their parents work. I watched both shows within the last month before I moved to Japan, I've been here a few years now and I feel that both of those shows gave me a pretty realistic expectation of life in Japan.

Another one for fun, 35 sai no koukousei, it's about a 35 year old high school student. It's more enjoyable than it sounds.

What happened to japanese cinematography after 80-s? I mean, i having hard time finding modern japanese movie that don't look like cheap drama or amateur digital video. Lighting is atrocious, editing and pacing are really bad too. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but they are really fucking rare, and mostly shot in purely academic fashion. You can say that japanese don't care, but in 80-s there were gorgeosly shot works that set standarts at the time. What the fuck.

I think that rule doesn't apply only to Japanese cinema. There are two main reasons for the current state of things:
1. The movie making industry's main goal is to (as with industry in general), what makes money here aren't necessarily high-quality products, but the products that are easily accessible. The art that earns a lot, despite being difficult to access, is usually not cinema, but paintings, sculptures etc.
2. Exposure - this isn't really the reason for the state of things, but more of the reason for its perception. The access to movies from the whole world is much easier nowadays than it was years ago. Back then the work usually needed to be acclaimed and successful in its home country to get exported. Also similar to other "back in the days things were better", what got preserved from those days, and what is remembered is usually the good stuff. The mediocre and the poor are left forgotten.
