Touhou tragedy:
1. We slowly realize that Marisa was Reimu's only real friend.
2. As time goes on Marisa realizes that she continues to age but Reimu does not
3. Panicking that her precious friend will outlive her for a long time, Marisa dips her feet into the pool of life extension magic
4. At first she starts out with some minor magic to keep herself forever 17 but as she strays farther and farther from her actual age she is forced to take more drastic rituals
5. Marisa slowly becomes a full fledged youkai magician
6. This gensokyo makes sense so Reimu goes out to hunt this recently born youkai
7. In her death knell, Marisa reveals to Reimu her motivation for turning youkai, and that she "really didn't mean it. Sorry."
8. In the end she ended up dying before her dearest friend.

In the case of a natural youkai sure, but I dont see how the same rules would apply for a human that becomes a youkai. Youkai simply disappear because they dont have a soul that can move on too the afterlife, so consider the fact that the process of a human turning into one does not include forfeiting the soul. I feel like a huge thing everyone overlooks with the humans becoming youkai thing is that they are fundamentally very different in terms of existence. Its the same deal with weather a not a magician youkai like Alice would need too rely on superstition/belief/fear like other youkai to maintain existence. That also lead into the other argument of if magician youkai even follow those rules too begin with because rather than beings of superstition they are beings of magic, much like how fairies are beings of nature.
