Any success stories from /djt/ anons?
I was active here (on /a/ actually) around the time I was preparing for JLPT N2. Today I am at JLPT N1 + 1 year, I visited Japan twice for 5 weeks since then and it's been a lot of fun. I don't regret spending this much time learning Japanese.

What are your opinions on forcing yourself to read something above your level in an attempt to force yourself to get used to reading at that level? I'm not talking like just a tiny leap in difficulty, i'm talking about going from, for example, reading Harry Potter to reading Ulysses or Paradise Lost, something along those lines, but with whatever Japanese equivalent you want to make up

In an ideal scenario this would probably be the fastest way to learn it. The problem is that the vast majority of people could not stay motivated enough to autistically refer to a dictionary for every word for very long. This is why the 80/20 or 90/10 rule in terms of words you do and don't understand in a given text is recommended to most people. You understand enough to enjoy what you're doing, and can infer the meaning of unknown words based on the context.

is Remembering the Kanji really the best? I noticed it does not show how to pronounce the kanji... so if I really do go through the entire book(s) I'll only know how to identify the kanji and what they mean, but not know how to speak it. Which is kind of required if I want to be fluent.

Yes. Kanji are used to write words, not for their readings (other than ateji-nonsense like 夜露死苦). Usually there is only one word that fits the context, so the kanji is pronounced that way.
The other exception would be stuff like 明日 that can have different valid readings with the same meaning, but even that is usually obvious form context by looking at how polite the rest of the conversation is.

This is my plan, which is loosely adopted from an ajatt approach. It's also aimed at automating as much as possible, so it's possible to do while on public transport and in bite size chunks. I already know both kana.

Heisig/RTK for recognition and writing
Bunpro (have lifetime account) and tae kim for grammar
Satorireader for vocabulary and kanji in context
Pimsleur whenever I'm doing dishes :)
Of course using Anki at the same time and listening to/watching as much japanese content as possible.

I'd be doing less +1 sentence mining, by relying on Satorireader for content tailored to my level, which also getting a lot of context sentences from bunpro. I can also do both satorireader and bunpro while on the go. RTK less so, but that's ok.

Right now I'm using wanikani for kanji learning, but the site is expensive and I'm thinking the money would be better spent on satorireader. Plus it makes sense to me that learning readings out of context is not terribly effective. Also, RTK apparently is a great way to learn how to write the kanji from memory and that's appealing.

So the question is whether I'm completely missing something. I'm a beginner and am still discovering cool sites and resources. Like Akebi which is amazing and Misa on youtube. I also don't know if this approach would leave me stunted in some way, or be ineffective.

Any feedback would be appreciated. I have read the starter's guide :)

You develop an intuition for it. There are no solid rules for what reading to use. A lot of words predate the kanji they are assigned. The only reason why 悲 is used in 悲しい is because the meaning of 悲 is close enough to かなしい, so it makes sense, or at least enough Japanese agree that it makes sense, so they are okay with writing 悲しい. However, this does not mean that somebody can not write 哀しい.

Hey! I have only really been studying for a year (pretty full on) finished genki 1, use wanikani and anki along with hello talk. I'm pretty happy with my level of communication on hello talk and I've made a pretty good friend on there where I pretty much only chat in Japanese. I thought I'd be pretty confident with the language when I left to Japan for the third time.

I didn't use Japanese once. Even in the most rural area (nihonmatsu Fukushima) they saw that I was foreign and immediately spoke English.

Everytime I wanted to order food or a coffee, I would practice sentences in my head and as soon as I'd go up to order, English. What is wrong with me?! I would try and listen to how Japanese people would order and it sounds nothing like the sentences I made up in my head. お願いします? 下さい? It was just very hard to gain confidence to speak. Even saying ありがとう felt unnatural. Has anyone else had a similar experience? This has just motivated the hell out of me to get some actual verbal practice in before my next trip.

This isn't a negative experience at all so please be kind. I'm curious to hear if anyone else has had the same issue and how the overcome it. Thankyou!

I'm (once again) trying to learn some japanese, this time using Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. In the na-adjectives chapter is this sentence:
>ボブは⿂が好きだ
Bob likes fish

However, reading the previous examples I translate the sentence to:
>As for Bob, fish (is) the thing (that is) desirable/likeable (to him)

And interpret it as:
>Bob is picky but likes fish.

Are those correct translations and interpretations or am I digging too deep or just plain wrong?

There are some differences between the Japanese grammar taught at ES/JHS in Japan and that taught for foreigners.

I'll give that a try, thanks. I really do think it's just that I hate reading. Even when I read books in English I usually give up half way through. I actually do read a stack of comics every week, but manga is different in a way that stopped me from getting into it. It seems to me that for kanji not to devolve into a giant, shapeless mass of similarly-looking characters (which may or may not hinder your reading capabilities), you'd need either RTK or writing. Downsides are obvious: RTK is retarded and writing is very time-consuming if done systematically and useless otherwise. RTK is not that retarded. Well, the order is but you can just separate kanji based on their JLPT levels or whatever in separate decks.

I've been told before to avoid watching/reading anime and manga while learning Japanese because the way they speak most of the time isn't how real people speak, and they use words or phrases that just aren't used in real conversation and would sound weird if they were. My question is, are there any that use practical, real Japanese instead of "Anime Japanese" as I've seen it called? I suppose manga but u can't so easily take words you don't know from manga and put 'em into anki like i've heard you're supposed to do. Light novels? They seem a bit advanced desu. What exactly does the construction ままになる convey? (3rd panel)

まま expresses a lack of change ("still"), while なる expresses an explicit change ("become"), and so used in conjunction they appear to contradict.

+ になってる = "becoming that his eyes stay open" ?

It is literally impossible to tell when hiragana is part of a word or when it's a particle. It is impossible to tell when a word begins and when it ends. Even Yomichan gives a dozen interpretations of a set of 5 characters depending on which random combination of characters the program highlights, so beginning to "read" Japanese with dozens of lines by relying on a translator program is just impossible. I think everyone in this thread is just pretending to understand Japanese. It's impossible to "start reading" with little to no vocab because it is impossible to figure out what something is saying in a way that you could remember while you struggle to find the correct interpretation while sliding your cursor back and forth, hoping Yomichan just happens to get it right. And figure it out based on context? Please. There are too many definitions thrown under too many combinations of the characters, and it's just a bunch of random lines you could never remember.

Grammar theory is an approximation and no one actually knows how a language works, it's just a gut feeling that native or highly fluent speakers have. Grammar theory is useful when you have no fucking clue what you're looking at. It is not useful for having a true understanding of the subtlety of using one grammatical construct over another.
