When you read, if you read something and don't quite understand it do you try to break down the grammar? or does your grammar improve through exposure?

You need to try to read it yourself and not just mindlessly hover over every word. But it's fine to use it extensively on every sentence so long as you're putting in some effort and mining words into Anki. (Maybe it's possible without Anki, but I can only speak to my experience.)

i pretty much only break down grammar when i don't know what's going on but i think i could figure it out. i tend to think that that is less efficient than reading more instead though. i do look up what new things mean a couple of times but i mostly leave it to exposure to build a mental model of what x does as opposed to thinking too much about what i read x does.

extra practice in reading words written in kanji is the only thing anki is good for and you need to be careful not to overdose

I'm stuck at that weird point now where I can read more kanji now but I can't really put together sentences well enough to speak. Is there a good place to practice? I tried some english/japanese discords but they had 1000s of people and were passive-aggressive about the rules. Maybe having a japanese friend to talk to would help.

I wonder how long I can keep learning kanji without using any kind of mnemonics. I'm using the KKLC important vocab deck, which covers around 2100 kanji in 3400 cards. Learning to write words instead of individual kanji is very satisfying, and as you go forward you get words that contain a new kanji and one that you've already learned, so you get extra reviews.

I can already feel my ability to visualize kanji getting stronger, which is my reason for doing this.

I live in nipland and work in a nip workplace, but I only ever studied like 3500-ish kanji and it serves me more than well enough. (I translate business reports with economic/tax terms on a regular basis, too) If you want to maximize real world fluency/understanding, I'd recommend grinding out the most common 四字熟語 before any kanji beyond 3000/3500-ish, common expressions, and cultural knowledge (big). One of my coworkers has 漢検一級, but in real world terms you'd be better off studying for 日本語検定. (you'd BTFO most gajin even among N1 holders)

I changed the deck options category that my deck was under last night and I think it somehow scrambled the "due" column. The numbers should match the "sort field" column on the left, so 1670 in "sort" should be 1670 "due".

Why did it change and is there an easy way to change it back?

C. What I was testing myself on wasn't giving me a clearer image of the writing system. It was giving me a stronger link between the writing system and specific English words. I essentially never make mistakes in stroke order or recall kanji that don't exist, I only ever recall the wrong kanji for a word that is similar in meaning, and that's how I know that I'm wasting my fucking time drilling this shit.

Sure, there was some benefit, but I don't consider it at all worth the time I've spent on this shit. I don't deny that it's helped my vocab recognition slightly, but maybe a radical deck would have done the same. I'll probably consider another way to practice kanji recall in a year or two when I have a much bigger vocabulary and can focus on kanji through the Japanese I know.
As it is, I'm making actual progress consuming Japanese, and my kanji deck drained me and reduced my time committed. You do what you want to do, but don't be so sure that you're right.

This can be an issue but I like KKLC much better than RTC for that purpose.
Examples of compounds help to catch the wider potential meaning of the kanji.

I never hard-studied KKLC, just read through it and now still return to it when some individual kanji is giving me trouble (like when there is a word in a core-deck i'm having to hit 'again' on over and over again).

RTC is old foggy garbage, It's like win98me when compared to KKLC's Win7.

Truth is the best method to learn japanese is whichever you come up with, some guides aren't as effective for some people and it's more motivating to make your own method. Motivation is the most important thing.
