This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Unless you're planning to move to a country where they speak a certain language, or you need to for your job, Japanese is one of the languages with the most compelling content at all difficulty levels.

Like, I could start learning German and I'd pick it up pretty soon because it's close to English, but I'm not planning on moving to Germany and aside from some literature and cinema there's not much to justify learning the language. My friend's learning German, and all he reads to git gud at it are things like Harry Potter translated into German, which just seems pointless. I guess once you're good at it you can graduate into reading more compelling stuff, but with Japanese this isn't necessary because there's tons of Japanese stuff aimed at kids and young adults that's actually worth reading.

But if you don't want to tell anyone that you like video games or cartoons I probably wouldn't tell them I'm learning Japanese, either.

Also I usually say that I wanted a challenge and that I'm going on vacation to Japan soon (which is true) if I don't want to go into too much detail.

Hey /djt/, I've been studying Japanese for about five months, and I wanted to know what everyone's daily study routines look like.

A typical study session for me is:

WaniKani review
KaniWani review
Manga-Sensei's 30-Day Challenge
Japanese Pod 101 lessons

Some days I'll add in some flashcards using Anki, but this has been my routine recently. Been thinking about working through Genki 1 too, maybe replacing Manga-Sensei. I always worry I'm not studying "smartly" enough or using my time effectively.

What does your study routine look like, and how long do you study for? What have you found works well for you, and what hasn't?

Has anyone here did self study before college and then went to a higher level course in their first year?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have been looking through the year one Japanese course material for my university, and it is pretty lame (like less than 100 kanji and 'basic' grammar).

Ive been self studying for a year and am around halfway through KKLC and finished with the Genki books, so I dont want to be in a class where it feels like im wasting my time. However, the placement test to get into a higher level class is an interview, and (as may be expected) I havent actually talked to anyone in Japanese before (just via text and talking to myself lol).

What do you guys think, has this kind of thing worked for any of you in the past?

>associating kanji with english words
you can associate kanji with japanese words if you already know japanese. heisig's method is still the most efficient because of the stories you make with the keywords and components. every time someone here claims it's an efficient way to learn to write and i ask for a more efficient method they never respond. are you telling me you could memorize how to write 25 kanji in correct stroke order in an hour using the method you advocate? i bet not.

I did RTK months ago and the only thing that stuck at all was the components and their stroke order. I don't look at new words using kanji I had learned and recall the keyword, I just think "oh it's that one" and then have to look it up. Components probably helped me distinguish kanji better, but associating 2000 kanji with keywords did nothing for me. I encourage you to reevaluate what you think you will get out of doing this. If it's "the ability to distinguish kanji", you probably only need learn a few hundred or some radicals. If it's "the ability to write", or "more knowledge of kanji", remember that you can do that faster by skipping the middleman of English keywords and learning Japanese first.

pantsu comes from british "pants"
"pants" comes from pantalone
pantalone comes from Παντελής
Παντελής comes from Παντελεημων
Παντελεημων uses the suffix παν (pan-, same as in Pangaea, etc)
παν is the combining form of πᾶς
πᾶς ultimately comes from proto-indo-european *peh₂nts

pan comes from pão
pão comes from pānem
pānem comes from pānis
pānis probably comes from *peh₂- via *pāstnis

As a book, RTK is complimented excessively and critiqued far too much by those on both sides. However most of the legit criticisms of the book have been fixed by the online community. The lack of pronunciation for instance is fixed on Kanji.Koohii review system and most Anki decks. The lack of vocabulary as well is fixed. The teaching of rarely used kanji ahead of more common kanji is fixed with optimized decks teaching more frequent lists in RTK order. Problems with keywords are fixed with decks offering multiple meanings or even a fucking picture to act as the meaning. The problems with lack of stories past 300 kanji is fixed with community stories.

Plus, once you have the component method down and know that it's visual stories and not mnemonics means you can learn in context any of the lesser used kanji instead of front loading every kanji then hope to run into them in a way you learn words using them. Personally it works, but other systems like KKLC, Wanikani and Kanji Damage which all do component methods also work. If someone says RTK is perfect and should use to exclusion of all else until you're finished I'd disregard as much as those that dismiss the whole book as trash and a waste of time.

it seems logical that text containing multiple cjk languages should not have to rely on manual font formatting to use the correct language variants in the correct place
but that brings up the question of how far do you go in encoding variations of the same character
if language-specific variations should be kept distinct, should historical variations be kept distinct

I think native speakers don't really look at their language as seriously and so when they came across difficult parts they just move through, knowing that there's probably something after that that can give them clues to what the thing they skipped mean.

From my personal experience, as I am taught to read each sentence carefully and break it down, there's a certain amount of resistance to this sort relaxed outlook.
