This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

It's irritating that I probably have dozens of errors like that lurking in my deck. Going through the entire deck manually would take so long. Anyways, I've always had a suspicion that a lot of advice in these threads comes from people who've bounced back and forth between a few methods and then when they finally settle on one that "works" they assume that their experience is going to be identical to a completely new learner, completely ignoring the possibility that they may have benefited from some of the other methods they've attempted.

It's easy to forget things like how unbelievably difficult it really is as a completely clean slate. A huge part of learning is actually just getting "familiar" with it, so even if you didn't really learn much from one method it probably helped a LOT more than you'd think with making the language more familiar.

Why are you trying to mislead people? Reading manga is unrealistically easy. Clean slaters can look at the panels and glean some amount of context from the pictures. It bothers me that English doesn't have an actual equivalent word for 物心. It's fine for them to sound retarded. Nobody really cares. It probably doesn't effect their lives whatsoever. A community of English learners at antimoon discovered that even without grammar study they were messing up grammar. Their theory is that for our L2 we focus more on vocab than grammar. I think you're assuming people only make grammar mistakes because they memorize grammar rules.

There are people who avoid grammar rules and still don't output with correct grammar. I would hypothesize that there is a difference between L1 and L2 acquisition. For your L2, it's just important to pay more attention to the various patterns.

My intuition says below.
勝ちに向かう (the accent of 勝ち is 1) means aim at winning.
勝ちに向かう (the accent, 2), whose subject is situations or conditions, means get an advantage.
勝ちへ向かう (the accent 2) is the same as above.
勝ちへ向かう (the accent 1) is unnatural.

The difference between に focusing on the goal and へ focusing on moving perhaps shows up in the point that 勝ちに向かう can mean aiming at winning but 勝ちへ向かう can't.

Producing fluent, grammatically proper language has nothing to do with "processing and thinking about things in Japanese" (which is really just another way of saying you don't need another language to parse Japanese). This is the truth though. a/an is an extremely basic grammar rule and yet people still mix them up after tens of thousands of hours of mass immersion. They do this because early in their studies they read a misleading "an always goes before a vowel" simplification of the rule and it stuck in their mind. By the time they consume enough to learn the truth they have reinforced this "rule" tens of thousands of times and at that point no intuition will ever fix it. If you read Japanese textbooks like Tae Kim with similar misleading rules then you're going to fuck up your Japanese forever. It's fine if you want to learn like that, but encouraging beginners to unknowingly and permanently ruin their Japanese ability is criminal.

They could, but they won't. At best they'll make a conscious effort for a few days to use the correct grammar in whichever word you caught them out on and then go back to using the incorrect grammar that's been reinforced hundreds of thousands of times. I want to increase my understanding of the Joyo kanji. I've more or less memorized them individually, and I know at least a few two-character compounds for each, but it's not enough. Reading doesn't feel like it's enough either because there is too much... non-kanji stuff in Japanese, it's kind of annoying, actually. So I'm thinking of starting to memorize 四字熟語 because pure kanji are the best, and these ready-made four-character compound things are like sushi (I love sushi), but in practice, how should I go about that? Is there a recommended resource? I know Japanese children must memorize them in school, but I've had no such luxury.

There's a lot of weird choices in this language, like using symbols that are just other symbols, but smaller as a way to influence pronunciation. In a language where you're already expected to memorize so many symbols you'd think they could come up with something more distinct.

But on the other hand English has dumb choices as well, like the similarity between a capital i and a lowercase L. These are things that seem like they might cause a lot of problems but in practice your brain instinctively knows which one you're looking at in 99% of cases, just like with shi and tsu.

it's not so much about the length of the stroke, it's about alternating the vertical and horizontal strokes
so for 左 you do the horizontal one first because the enclosed component starts with a horizontal stroke (order: horizontal, vertical (end of enclosing radical), horizontal (start of enclosed component))
for 右 the vertical(ish) stroke is first because that's what makes the strokes alternate direction between the enclosing radical and the enclosed component
you can probably find some exceptions to this rule but it's quite accurate when it comes to this radical at least

I may also add that this increased awareness is useful both for remembering/understanding words you are already familiar with as well as understanding and being able to read new character compounds that you might encounter, because your mind won't be bogged down by false merged kanji and held back by unawareness that you've already seen that particular kanji in a different word, which you never paid attention to it. Been studying for 18 months and stopped using SRS like 2 months ago and my routine turned into pure bliss: read VN I'm currently reading for an hour -> tab to reddit to see if any interesting threads for 5 minutes -> tab back -> repeat until out of time/dont feel like reading! No reviews in the morning for an hour+ and adding new cards for an hour+ later in the day! Looking back half a year, I was so dumb to do that! Trying to preserve random knowledge that I either know so well that I wont forget it anyways or dont know/understand it to the point that I'd forget it anyway and wouldn't be able to utilize it outside flashcards! Even deleted my RTK deck although all cards in there were super mature and I'd get like 5-10(out of ~3400) reviews a day including new obscure kanji I was adding there so RIP my baby :( But I did RTK to be able to differentiate kanji from one another in the beginning and now thats not an issue so whats the point anyways. I wish that was my studying routine from the beginning, if I could start over I'd probably not use SRS for vocab(sentences) at all! Looking back, most(all?) of the vocab I aquired had nothing to do with trying to artificially remember a word by seeing it in the same sentence over and over (except RTK, I'd probably still do RTK with SRS but put like a limit, if the next time I see a card in >6 months, just delete it so deck would just empty itself in time)

Your post concerns me. What exactly was that an attempt at? Writing hiragana out in a big grid? Why would you do that... it isn't going to help you learn. Having it in a big grid like that might make you feel safe but that isn't how it appears in the wild so why would you train like that. With the time you wasted drawing that grid you could have just written out the hiragana again... or played one of those online hiragana recall games.

Now you talk about learning the kanji... why? You haven't even read a single real Japanese sentence. It appears your brain may have been permanently damaged by schooling, workbooks, and textbook manufactures.

Have you ever considered just learning Japanese?
