Does anyone else think LingQ is the greatest thing ever created for learning languages? It takes care of graded reading material but lets you import your own, has flash cards built in, lets you look up words you dont know and shit.

I hope someone is planning to offline or archive the material so after it officially shuts down we can still use it. I’ve only had it a few days but i am totally convinced. Based lingosteve

So I'm grinding kana using DJTKana and doing the daily cards on AnkiDroid, currently on Day 3.
I'm impressing myself with the amount of Kana I remember and can do the first full Hirigana grid consistently (excluding dakuten, still got a ways to go)
Same can't be said for Anki, can't remember shit consistently on the core2k cards. Is this a normal process for the first month? It'd give me peace of mind to know that I'm not retarded or something.

LingQ doesn't detect words correctly in Japanese. Other languages don't have this word detection problem so for other languages I'd say it's great. Better than any other language learning resource other than doing it yourself with anki, and most people are too stupid to do it themselves.

Is there any add-on out there that goes through your entire deck and points out any kana readings that don't match what's in the dictionaries? I've added >25k words manually and every now and then I find hiragana errors (latest one was がくふち for 額縁 which should be がくぶち). It's irritating that I probably have dozens of errors like that lurking in my deck. Going through the entire deck manually would take so long. I'm probably going to end up doing it if I'm forced to, though.

i forget the specifics of how it works. i think you might have to make sure the field you want furigana in has a specific name. i'd google a tutorial first if i were you.

I dropped core at 1500 words and read through and took notes on Tae Kim, then I just started reading. I can read pretty much any LN in the library effortlessly. Real novels are a little tougher but still doable.

The first LN I read was GJ部 followed by Kino, and then Saekano. From there I stopped keeping track but just kept reading.

I noticed this too. When I "finished" core I dropped cards completely and replaced my card study time with more reading and it accelerated my learning which was slow since the beginning of the year. I'll say that cards were absolutely crucial to me learning in the first place though.

Anyways, I've always had a suspicion that a lot of advice in these threads comes from people who've bounced back and forth between a few methods and then when they finally settle on one that "works" they assume that their experience is going to be identical to a completely new learner, completely ignoring the possibility that they may have benefited from some of the other methods they've attempted.

It's easy to forget things like how unbelievably difficult it really is as a completely clean slate. A huge part of learning is actually just getting "familiar" with it, so even if you didn't really learn much from one method it probably helped a LOT more than you'd think with making the language more familiar.

There's a lot of weird choices in this language, like using symbols that are just other symbols, but smaller as a way to influence pronunciation. In a language where you're already expected to memorize so many symbols you'd think they could come up with something more distinct.

But on the other hand English has dumb choices as well, like the similarity between a capital i and a lowercase L. These are things that seem like they might cause a lot of problems but in practice your brain instinctively knows which one you're looking at in 99% of cases, just like with shi and tsu.

I found a mnemonic that explains where the longer stroke is through their 小篆 (しょうてん) forms, and I guess I just kind of have to focus on that longer stroke coming second and on the whole mnemonic of it all. Personally, I have the urge to write the horizontal stroke first regardless of character. Wiktionary actually tells me that that is the way it's done outside of Japan, or at least in "中国", whatever that means.

it's not so much about the length of the stroke, it's about alternating the vertical and horizontal strokes
so for 左 you do the horizontal one first because the enclosed component starts with a horizontal stroke (order: horizontal, vertical (end of enclosing radical), horizontal (start of enclosed component))
for 右 the vertical(ish) stroke is first because that's what makes the strokes alternate direction between the enclosing radical and the enclosed component
you can probably find some exceptions to this rule but it's quite accurate when it comes to this radical at least

Been studying for 18 months and stopped using SRS like 2 months ago and my routine turned into pure bliss: read VN I'm currently reading for an hour -> tab to reddit to see if any interesting threads for 5 minutes -> tab back -> repeat until out of time/dont feel like reading! No reviews in the morning for an hour+ and adding new cards for an hour+ later in the day! Looking back half a year, I was so dumb to do that! Trying to preserve random knowledge that I either know so well that I wont forget it anyways or dont know/understand it to the point that I'd forget it anyway and wouldn't be able to utilize it outside flashcards! Even deleted my RTK deck although all cards in there were super mature and I'd get like 5-10(out of ~3400) reviews a day including new obscure kanji I was adding there so RIP my baby :( But I did RTK to be able to differentiate kanji from one another in the beginning and now thats not an issue so whats the point anyways. I wish that was my studying routine from the beginning, if I could start over I'd probably not use SRS for vocab(sentences) at all! Looking back, most(all?) of the vocab I aquired had nothing to do with trying to artificially remember a word by seeing it in the same sentence over and over (except RTK, I'd probably still do RTK with SRS but put like a limit, if the next time I see a card in >6 months, just delete it so deck would just empty itself in time)
