>Why does the ri in べんり sounds like di?
The Japanese r is somewhere in between the English l and d. In some words it sounds closer to one than the other. If you read the manga Chi's Sweet Home (a manga about a kitten), you will sometimes see d sounds written as r sounds (e.g. だ becoming ら) in order to represent the very childish style of speech that the title character uses.

>I looked it up and it says -na inflection? Can anybody explain?
便利 is a な-adjective. 「便利な物。」, etcetera.

>> No.19815080

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

they are why do you think so many people quit

on another note:

mouseover dictionaries are the least intrusive kind of dictionary access because you never have to defocus the game to use them and they provide nothing until you mouse over the text so you don't get used to reading off them being easier (like it is with parsers which give word boundaries or furigana insertion)

plus some games have annoying fonts so if you have vision problems you might just want to read off a browser screen and google the occasional word anyway idk you don't need a mouseover dictionary for that though

ITT: dumbest reasons we got involved in learning nihongo
I randomly watched a meme video of Jap girls talking English and got hooked on it really hard and then I looked up their names and go emotionally invested in their lives and JPOP and down the road decided to learn Japanese so I can understand the lyrics (a bad move) and TV shows they appear in

IF I lose my interest in them (which was slowly waning for some time, then getting rekindled etc. but never as fierce as initially) I will have no reason to learn Japanese besides learning it for sake of it, because it's kinda cool language to learn

I envy you weebs and hentaifags, you have clearly far more materials to work with, I went through whole discography of multiple groups in a year and it was material produced since 1998

You just need better listening practice. The ひいきびいき podcast is my favorite listening practice I've encountered. It ended in June, but they stopped at episode #280 so you should be able to find some episodes about stuff you're interested in. Who knows how long they'll keep hosting all the episodes for download so get them while you can. The older Japanese podcasts I've been interested in listening to all seem to have disappeared from the internet without any hope of recovery (like the Dig! There's a fair amount of anime that do ネットラジオ featuring seiyuu that star in them which are essentially podcasts. I think most pull them down as or after they initially air to be later sold in cd form, but you can find downloads for some or listen on youtube and the like. They tend to do episodes around 30-50 minutes based on the one's I've listened to. They often cover multiple reoccurring themes over each episode and may read mail from fans pertaining to them. Like the 俺妹 had a bit about the girls guessing meaning of fan-provided web slang or talking about the 可愛い妹s of fans. ごちうさ had a thing with the girls learning about and how to do latte art. Not everything revolves around fan mail but it seems to tend to have a fair role. Some interesting stuff comes up, but it's always nice to listen to girls with cute voices talk regardless.

I did a deck of Japanese prefectures at one point to prepare myself for a month-long trip I took all around middle and Western Japan during this summer, but other than that, no. I mined while I was reading as well, but I usually checked whether a word was already in core 10k before I added it, and I only ended up mining about 600 words total. I still haven't started studying the cards in my mining deck yet since I finished Core10K, partially since I'm enjoying having fewer reps every day, and partially since it hardly even feels like I need to increase my vocabulary further. I can enjoy all of the media I care to without having to look up much at all, and I was frequently mistaken for being an expat who had lived in Japan for years while I was over there. One taxi driver asked 「何年間で日本に住んでますか?」, for example.
I used to keep up my studying motivation by telling myself constantly that I wasn't good enough and that I sucked terribly at Japanese, and needed to keep pushing really hard to have any chance of getting good, but a month of people mistaking me for a permanent resident of Japan as opposed to a tourist who had never been there admittedly probably gave me a bit of a big head, and I've stopped trying so hard as a result. I ought to get back into gear sometime soon, I suppose. N1 is coming up.

matt('s)is

>why aren't you reading
>kusopostingu(の)だ
i.e. the reason why you aren't reading is because shitposting is too attractive
>(the fault) is of shitposting's
i guess xなの is the same as this but just with an implicit だ for different feeling to it probably colder or more feminine because manly characters always say だ and are sure of themselves

based on my observations な is there to make it clearer kind of like with na-adjectives
なんだ and んだ are just making it shorter and the なのだ is separate from なんだ as in
>who's the worst eceleb
>nukeduckなんだ

i should probably read a grammar guide trying to decipher grammar rules with just vocab and immersion is difficult, it originally took me pretty long to get のに but i guess it's kind of like なのに except it's of/because instead of despite

you sound like you're in the same boat and you're chasing the dream that "in a year everything will be easy to understand and reading will be fun"
you'll make progress but the struggle wont go away for a long time, if you can't enjoy the process you're not going to make it to the point where everything is easy
i agree that it becomes more enjoyable when the input is more comprehensible, but that doesn't happen as fast as you think unless you self-sabotage with "i'm only going to consume easy media from now on so that i get my enjoyment"
so the more important thing is to enjoy the progress and enjoy whatever understanding you have, no matter how much you don't understand

Yes, had a writer but Oh Great always does the 'final cut' the actual character diaogue, especially Kiwa for example, has that Oh Great style to it, and the way the story cuts in a complex way from frame to frame with dialogue and action skipped is his usual style. Even the Bakemonogatari manga is based off the books obv. but he puts his spin on it abd you can see his specific style. I don't like the Bake manga as much so far though, nowhere near the comolexity and detail of Biorg.

the model is not complete or necessarily even accurate, and at first you don't even know it's there because you can't remember anything, but the more exposure you get the more you build it and correct it
you start to have a faint idea of what it means which gets changed through "oh it can be used like that too" or "oh maybe it's more like this"

Rikaisama -> Yomichan (feature rich but slow and ugly and seemingly no longer updated) or Rikaichamp (fast and looks the same as Rikaisama but lack many of its features). Tampermonkey -> Greasemonkey (it stopped being shit a while back and now works properly again). There are most likely replacements for the other two as well.

You will have to upgrade some day, m8. Eventually some new web technology will come along and you will stop being able to use certain websites because your ancient browser can't read them. You're also missing out on multiprocessing and stuff.
