The Japanese r is somewhere in between the English l and d. In some words it sounds closer to one than the other. If you read the manga Chi's Sweet Home (a manga about a kitten), you will sometimes see d sounds written as r sounds (e.g. だ becoming ら) in order to represent the very childish style of speech that the title character uses.

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

I've been reading Tae Kim and I have to use yomichan to look up all the vocab on the page to make sure I'm understanding the grammar points, but I'm starting to memorize the vocab too. So am I using yomichan correctly?

they are why do you think so many people quit

on another note:

mouseover dictionaries are the least intrusive kind of dictionary access because you never have to defocus the game to use them and they provide nothing until you mouse over the text so you don't get used to reading off them being easier (like it is with parsers which give word boundaries or furigana insertion)

plus some games have annoying fonts so if you have vision problems you might just want to read off a browser screen and google the occasional word anyway idk you don't need a mouseover dictionary for that though

I'm kinda bummed that I don't have that version of the soundtrack while I'm playing, but when you're not comparing them side-by-side the Saturn OST isn't bad by any means. Plus, it's plenty comfy to be playing it on real hardware on my CRT.

I didn't do it that way because when I started learning Japanese I wasn't sure that I wanted to commit to doing all that upfront work, but I regret this now.

Where'd you get this from? The problem with people like this is that they think "wow RTK helped me after I knew Japanese so it would have helped me before I knew Japanese even more" but they don't understand that knowing Japanese made RTK much easier for them to do and to retain what RTK teaches. matt currently recommends doing lazy kanji really fast (like 100 per day) and then doing kanji the hard way (handwriting) when you have the basics down because it's effortless when you know vocab for almost all the kanji and already have a vague shape

You just need better listening practice. The ひいきびいき podcast is my favorite listening practice I've encountered. It ended in June, but they stopped at episode #280 so you should be able to find some episodes about stuff you're interested in. Who knows how long they'll keep hosting all the episodes for download so get them while you can. There's a fair amount of anime that do ネットラジオ featuring seiyuu that star in them which are essentially podcasts. I think most pull them down as or after they initially air to be later sold in cd form, but you can find downloads for some or listen on youtube and the like. They tend to do episodes around 30-50 minutes based on the one's I've listened to. They often cover multiple reoccurring themes over each episode and may read mail from fans pertaining to them. Like the 俺妹 had a bit about the girls guessing meaning of fan-provided web slang or talking about the 可愛い妹ｓ of fans. ごちうさ had a thing with the girls learning about and how to do latte art. Not everything revolves around fan mail but it seems to tend to have a fair role. Some interesting stuff comes up, but it's always nice to listen to girls with cute voices talk regardless.

I did a deck of Japanese prefectures at one point to prepare myself for a month-long trip I took all around middle and Western Japan during this summer, but other than that, no. I mined while I was reading as well, but I usually checked whether a word was already in core 10k before I added it, and I only ended up mining about 600 words total. I still haven't started studying the cards in my mining deck yet since I finished Core10K, partially since I'm enjoying having fewer reps every day, and partially since it hardly even feels like I need to increase my vocabulary further. I would agree if your assumption that the translation is necessarily unnatural were true, which I'm not sure it is. I've read Harry Potter in my native language a long time ago and it never sounded unnatural to me, it was just like any other book. If you hadn't told me it was a translation I wouldn't have known.
Now, I haven't read it in Japanese and I'm not good enough to judge the quality of the Japanese translation of Harry Potter, but for a title like that, I think it's fair to assume that it reads just fine.

Yes, had a writer but Oh Great always does the 'final cut' the actual character diaogue, especially Kiwa for example, has that Oh Great style to it, and the way the story cuts in a complex way from frame to frame with dialogue and action skipped is his usual style. Even the Bakemonogatari manga is based off the books obv. but he puts his spin on it abd you can see his specific style. I don't like the Bake manga as much so far though, nowhere near the comolexity and detail of Biorg.

If it takes that long it is toofar above your level. Read simple stuff like Inuyashiki, Giganto, and move up slowly. Another recc. is 血の轍 and stuff like that. Really easy to read plus you learn some dialect.

maybe but it was far from the hardest thing i tried in the beginning and i made progress. i had very low vocab so i think a lot of the time was just checking words. in the end i thought that i wasn't making progress because it wasn't challenged enough, or rather the challenges were sparse with lots of easy shit between them so i wasn't being prepared for them.
