This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, bara, visual novels, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

>Hi! My advice is to concentrate on the pronunciation provided by Duo and not bother much about learning pitch. It is not taught in courses and does not figure in most dictionaries because it does not actually cause misunderstandings in context. Furthermore, pitch varies between prefectures, and an unaccented Japanese is perfectly fine for all purposes. Usually, only people like voice actors and news announcers would need to study it for their work.

When Matt announced that he considered Patreon I was so happy as his viewer - more content from Matt, he deserves some money for his hard work right! Many people thought the same...
しかし, he now makes content for people who PAY, he doesn't give a single fuck about all the viewers who were with him since day 1 if they don't PAY. He basically ignored the biggest chunk of his fanbase for monetary profit. He's giving people some scraps trying to milk them to the core, he should be making videos 24/7 with such support and no single responsibility in his life.

Look how much content he releases, I thought being a YouTuber + having Patreon = a lot of compelling 'nitty-gritty' content, yet he releases like 1-3 videos per month. his Patrons don't get a lot more either. He gave people advice and backed away from it, but the review of said advice is only available to his biggest fans i.e. those who pay. Rest of his supporters didn't get shit. You can't even TALK to him without paying.

Damn you Matt you fucking jew, I thought you said you didn't need money because you were from affluent family, your meditation doesn't help you much if you still haven't found the profit in being poor but humble.

The second sentence is confusing me. Is he saying he has a woman's taste or is he joking that he liked a female VA?

採用理由は僕の曲“ひと耳惚れ”ですね.いつか彼女の声をあててほしいと思っていたんです。

Is he saying that when he heard her sing, it was like 'love at first listen'? Then he says he hoped she'd consider the voice role?

rote memorization with anki is faster than reading in the beginning

source: been my experience the past several weeks. only word i remembered recently due to reading alone is 鏡 which is strange because it's not a very useful word. in that same amount of time i've reviewed dozens of super common words in anki that make me notice them more while reading and vice versa. if i'm not reviewing them in anki, chances are i aint remembering them.

>started AJATT meme back in late March thinking I'd get "really fucking good™" in the most efficient way possible
>6 months later of daily reps, sentence mining, and full immersion, and I am nowhere near becoming fluent in Japanese

The realization came when I went to dinner this previous Tuesday with a relative, my mom's cousin, who had lived throughout Asia for most of her life, including Japan, as a diplomat. My mom told her I'd been studying the language which prompted her to try and talk to me in Japanese. I looked like a complete tool not being able to string together two sentences of conversational Japanese. And to make things worse, whatever I did say, broken as it may have been, came out of me in the thickest accent imaginable. I kept looking at my dad out of nervousness as I struggled, and the look he made as he sipped his beer in silence said it all. Between the awkwardness, and my mom's cousin trying to be a good sport about the whole thing, I felt completely humiliated.

It was a real eye opener for me. I think i'm done with memes. At this point I might as well try Genki, or some other shit that delivers. It's weird too because I have gone through RTK and can garner the meaning of pretty much most Japanese text, but now I find that it's all useless because I can't put any of that into practice. I apologize for the long post.

Haaha I remember those days. Ga is fkn easy. You won't truly understand it till you know the language better but just think of it like this.. When you say a sentence every part of the sentence is equal usually, but when you want to empasize something like: Assume there are 5 watches at a store, but you and the person you are talking to know there is a particular watch you wanted. Instead of saying "I bought A watch" (は)you could say "I bought THEE watch." (が)
tl;dr its for emphasizing
We do it in english but usually by stressing, they use a particle instead

I started learning japanese today and what a fucking retarded writing system they have. Syllabery is shit and Chinese characters are mega shit. Now they just combine these two worst scripts to form the ultimate brainlet writing system. I have so much to complain about this shit but i guess that will do nothing but take away from my studying time so i got no choice but to hold nose and trudge through this stinky language.

You've fallen into a trap like most people on the internet who think there is a /get rich quick/ scheme with language. The only way to truly learn Japanese is by using Japanese. Putting on 8 hours of noise each day or sentence mining randomly and all that nonsense is not going to help you learn Japanese. The quickest and best way to learn the language is to NEED to learn it. It's by using it. This is why living in Japan is very useful for people learning it. Immersion is thrown around a lot misguidedly by people without thought. However, I can't talk much about AJATT and such methods because I've never really followed them, but what is hard and true is that if you have a need for a language you're going to have an easier time assimilating it. Most of us here are really only interested in Japanese because of manga and visual novels. People like us have no real immediate NEED for real Japanese. Which makes me think you're in the same boat since you're here among us. If you want to escape that then you may want to learn to actually speak the language and make that a priority. Whatever works you know.

Yeah true this. I am trying my best to embrace this shit just like how i embraced mind numbing retardation in English. Not just kanji, even kana is fucking shit for me as my native language is abugida(which is same as syllabery but graphemes are related to one another based on vowel or constant sound in it rather than having unique glyph for each syllabel). On the other hand, kanji is just a nightmare for me now, i hope i get over my kanjiphobia soon.

Quick question about japan's medical system for a story. I don't know where to ask so here I am.

Are medical costs reimbursed/taken care of the same way they are in most of the EU, or is more like the american system where you literally pay for everything? A lot of characters have that cliché sick sister they have to take care of, but I'm not sure about it.

In the sentence: '扱いが難しそうな武器を軽々と振り回して使いこなす主人公は、やはりずば抜けた戦闘センスの持ち主?', does the second part of the sentence refer to 主人公 or the person who previously owned the weapon? How would you translate 限界オタク into English?

I kinda get the meaning that it's sort of the next stage of キモヲタ, that it's such an offputting excessive otaku that you just can't hold back anymore and scream "holy christ look at that guy"

But what would be a fitting term in English? I've been considering marginal otaku or fringe otaku, but I'm not sure either really gets the point across, that it's sort of a disrespectful channer-style term for being way too nerdy about something.

Unless yahoo answers is fucking with me and its meaning is simpler than that, of course.

But that doesnt mean i cant get confused. I dont know if its implied i should know the japanese spelling of the word like in the 2K deck.

It says readings are through vocab, and that might mean readings is 2K deck only, but as a non-native english speaker im simply not 100% sure, hence my questions.

Cichlids tend to be highly territorial and socially competitive. They're constantly vying for some rock or hole to "own". Usually it is recommended to overstock a cichlid tank slightly in order to disperse aggression. With three fish it's easy for the most aggressive alpha to pick on and injure the weakest link. With twelve fish the most aggressive alpha will have that many more others to compete with/take out his aggression on. Sometimes, however, the weakest link still emerges. When this happens multiple fish might pick on the weakling and chase him/her around, disallowing them from entering any kind of territory among the rocks (they like rocks). They drive this weaker fish to stay toward the top reaches of the tank. Eventually the fish just starts hanging out there naturally because it knows it'll get bullied if it comes down. Then, after some time of giving up on fighting for its own territory and competing with the other fish, the weakling just...gives up. Even if the other fish have left them alone by then, and the fish isn't physically injured or lacking food or anything, the fish doesn't even try to reenter "society" anymore and just...dies.

My opinion is that everyone has a natural retention rate and there is no way to change it. You can add more reps and that will increase the retention rate but then you are taking more time to cover the same amount of words. Then you get into situations where you could either be spending 1 hour a day in Anki and getting 70% retention, or 1.5 hours and getting 80%. Which is better? I'd go with the first one because I hate Anki.

Anyone knowledgeable on the subject matter watched this video yet? It Matt just talking a load of bollocks or does his theory make sense?

TL;DW:
Matt argues (seemingly based on an image he found in 5 minutes on Google) that increasing your retention rate requires exponentially more work. That is, going from 60% retention to 61% retention requires much less work than going from 80% to 81%, despite the same 1% increase in material remembered.

He then argues based on this that aiming for a lower retention rate reduces your work load, which in turn allows you to learn more new cards per day. He claims that this actually results in you being able to learn more information than you would were you aiming for the default 90% retention, because while your retention rate has only gone down a little, the amount of new cards you can learn each day has gone up by more than enough to offset that drop in retention.

I haven't finished the video yet, but that sums up the ~10 minute introduction. The rest of the video is seemingly just him outlining how he came up with his formula for calculating the ideal retention rate and then giving his conclusions.

Don't make cards from words on your first encounter. Only if you've encountered a word multiple times but you keep forgetting it, then turn it into a card.
Don't even bother adding sentences since it's a word you keep encountering while reading anyway, that'll provide enough context.
Delete older cards with high intervals regularly.

Nah this is how Japanese works. Sure, if it was just "動物好きじゃない" without context you would assume it's "not liking animals".

It would be more clear if she added a sentence ending particle indicating a question like

or
>"動物好きじゃないか"
However there are not necessary and can just be done with intonation/context. In this case 例えば makes it a question.

Are japanese really this illiterate of their own language? One japanese native and one fluent half japanese failing miserably on a "kanji test", with some fairly common ones. Even I beat their scores, and I couldn't pass n3.

This is fake right?

VN core is only 1250 words, If you know a little bit already you can knock it out in a week. It's apretty good set of vocab and super easy, so it wont hurt anything. Mining through foreign sentences too much can ruin the fun imo.

I've realized a pretty major oversight in Matt's new video.

He makes the assumption that your daily reviews = 7 * new cards per day, but this estimate is based on people's experiences with the default Anki settings which aim to give you 90% retention. What happens though when your retention falls (i.e. the amount of cards you fail goes up) is that your daily review load goes up accordingly, so by dropping your retention rate a full 20 percentage points from 90% down to 70%, you can expect that your daily reviews will become much more than 7 * new cards per day in the long term.

Speaking of the long term, because he suggests making the interval modifier so high, it will probably take him and his hapless followers quite some time to realize this.

Matts whole video is autistic as fuck. Don't try too hard to make sense of it. There's so many variables he doesn't even bring up and he beats to death the one thing thats common sense.

But how? How can people defend a language that well adjusted adults who speak it natively can't even read it, to the point where they make "contests" to see who can read the most amount of fairly common words?

How is it possible to defend that?

Most well-adjusted adult English natives probably can't spell the word "mellifluous" or tell you what it means. The thing is that it has absolutely no bearing on daily activities. For Japanese in particular you also don't need to know how a word is read to be able to understand its meaning, they might not know how to read 痩身 but obviously they know what it means.

Is there a grammar guide for intermediates after learning all of tae kim? For example tae kim doesnt cover how mo can make phrases mean everything or nothing, and I don't think toiu is covered at all. Also how ni can change how a sentence is read and not just be a direction particle.

If you watched the videos, you would realize that none of the kanji come close to that level of obscurity. The most obscure one was probably "toxicity", and if we are going by your logic, almost any English speaker, adult or not, could tell you what that means.
