This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Guys, I've been learning Japanese for over a year and I feel like I'm not doing enough despite having 8-10 hours of free time daily (plus whole weekends free).
Within the year I very quickly learned kana and went through RTK1+3. then I was really struggling with Tae Kim for a few months, but I finially finished it, then I was fucking around with vocab decks. In the most recent months I started reading Graded Readers (read 40 of them from Cornucopia) and some NHK news, plus tried a bit of manga (casual speech a hell). I also watched a couple hundred hours of raw Japanese (TV shows + anime).
Nowadays I go through my 2 Anki decks (1 for RTK, 1 for vocab [it's Core 2k with additional mined words]) which takes me around 60-80 minutes. Then I read Graded Readers (actually my last one, I'm gonna transfer to manga now) for 1 hour mining new words from it. Then I add 10 new words to my active deck for me to review. Then I watch 3-4 hours of anime. So that's 5-6 hours of doing something.

I don't know if I'm approching it in a way that couldn't be way better. I feel like maybe 4 hours max of watching raw anime may be a good number and I should put more emphasis on reading, because without vocab I won't simply understand nihongo by simply watching it...

VNs / LNs come before anime. The only way that you "have a handle on" anime is if you are advanced or fluent, because it's a lot harder to understand things in real-time aurally than it is to read things.

if you can handle that you're ready for an ln or vn
more varied vocabulary use might scare you but get out of your comfort zone
try some that look interesting until you find one you can slowly work through and understand 75% or more of and you are motivated to continue
expect some challenge you will get much more comfortable after a few days in the deep end
personally i only went through a few manga but after yotsuba was easy i wasnt happy with the slow rate of improvement
i think focusing on building vocabulary before committing so many hours to raw anime is a good choice but my listening ability is shit so no advice there
the push for early listening to internalize what japanese sounds like seems to me to ignore that most of us learning japanese have already listened to hundreds or thousands of hours of subbed anime

Sup guys!
After years of putting it aside, because fuck life, I finally decided to dive into Japanese as it has been a dream of mine for more than a decade.

So I started researching the internet ony my own what books to use etc. I have the book part down for the most part I think.
I also stumbled upon Japanesepod101 in my research and I have the opportunity to get a one year membership for 70% off.
Has anyone experience with that site and can recommend it? By the looks of it they have a massive amount of content, but it's the lesson/teaching structure + lack of grammar I am worried about.
Also are there any apps you might recommend aside from Anki?

Which implies you were trying to memorize it, rather than just using it for reference. There's the problem. Drop anki, or at least limit it to 15 minutes a day. Spend more time with compelling content, using whatever tools you like to make it comprehensible. Watching raw anime isn't going to do much good (it'll do some) if you don't understand anything. Read the Japanese transcript with yomichan while watching or before. Or watch once raw, then check the transcript and watch again.

>Brace for at least four different approaches
Hm, that could be a good thing, no? If you have several options to choose from, just pick the one that suits your personal learning style the most. At least that's how I see it. Whether that style is effective or not is an entirely different story though.
>and the fighting that will ensue.
Do you mean the cat fights? There seem to be mostly female presenters, which I honestly don't mind and most of them seemed sympathetic to me. So at least I wouldn't get bored or fed up with them after a while.
>If anything, read the guide
Will definitely do. I used to casually browse DJT threads on /a/ years ago, but it has grown since then into its own thing with the two guides. Mad respect to the people who put all the effort and time into making and maintaining them.
I'm just a little sad that DJT threads aren't allowed on /a/ anymore and I recently found out that 4chan was split wtf?!
>and then go with what seems to make the most sense to you.
I think that's my biggest problem right now. I'm motivated as hell but somewhat at a loss how to organise and structure the whole thing. I just want to get started right from the very beginning. I do speak several languages already and the academic approach of tackling a new language is usually very structured and organised. There is a general red line to follow and in which order to make one step after another, so you gradually build upon the previously learned material.
Everywhere I looked on the internet regarding Japanese and I read and watched dozens of hours of these "how to learn Japanese" guides it always boils down to:
>learn your Anki decks
>learn your Kanji
>bruteforce for 3+ years
>congratulations, you are now Japanese!
It does not work that way. At least that's what I like to think based on my previous life experience. I haven't found a single guide yet with a natural progression, it's always random shit and all over the place. Which makes everything unnecessarily more difficult and frustrating. Sorry for rambling away.

>>20312103
>Don't make it your main source of study though
I definitely won't. For books I intend to get

Jpod101 is good for absolute beginners just keep in mind it’s for getting your feet wet/ introduction to concepts. Don’t try to “learn” from it, the Japanese is too contrived plus as a beginner every time you learn 1 thing it’ll make you wonder 10 more questions and Japanese pod 101 isn’t designed to answer those other questions (if it bothers you just pause the podcast and try to formulate the question into google)
I agree it shouldn’t be a primary resource but if you are excited about doing it then you should do it, affective filtering is no joke. But yeah it’d be good to listen to while driving, running, working etc, just when you’re doing other stuff and can’t afford a lot of attention elsewhere.
Also I heard their newer stuff is designed really well and they got an actual language teacher to help make the lessons, just google something like Japanese pod 101 recommended path.

Well, I said that I was going to play KOF some every Saturday. Well, I didn't get back until today at Sunday, so I figured I was just play then. And it was cool, I was able to play some people I play as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary, ya' know? However, today I noticed that a certain player was on today. He is one of the better players in the United States. He may not be top level, but he is one step below that. I never manage to really beat hm, so I really wanted to challenge him to some games. Well, today I faced him....and he beat my tale just like he always has. I wasn't even able to get a game in. We played a lot of matches. So, after our games, I ask him "What am I doing wrong?". And he tells me numerous specific things of my play. However, there was one thing that really stuck out to me that he told me. He tells me, "You are only as good as the people you fight against. Your play style works against people at your level. But with someone who is better than you, you lose." He then tells me that in order to get to the "next level" at fighting games, you have to face good players offline. This means TRAVEL. The said reality for most players is that most people just simply don't have the time nor resources to do such a thing. Because of this, most people never leave intermediate purgatory. I know that I am not able to just travel all the time to these tournaments. Online is all I have available to me. And for the goals that I had with fighting games, online just isn't adequate. So, I have to ask myself, what am I playing for? If I am doomed in being at intermediate, why should I not direct my attention into something more productive? It just doesn't make sense. This is a realization that I have come to. I may play every now and then, but Japanese is going to be my main focus right now. It just feels so bad to have wasted so much time. But that is okay, I will move on. Sorry if this was not entirely related to Japanese, but this is going to effect my Japanese in a positive way hopefully.

why wouldn't they just use the past tense.

Wait a second...I thought seeing a word repeated dozens of times in a text as a beginner would instill it in your brain just as effectively as seeing it a few times, mining it, and reviewing it in anki?

Did DJT make a mistake and assume that because reading and listening teaches them words effectively as intermediates, that all beginners will have that benefit as well? That's not possible. These guys know everything. Their reasonable intuition can't empirically be false.

Not him but it's because anki should always be a side tool. It's very easy to get trapped on it and end up spending most of your study time on anki when it should be used as an auxiliary tool and nothing more and never the main dish. 20 min is probably just some random shit he said, you can do 30 or whatever if you want, what is important to keep in mind is not to get fooled by anki.

This is all my own opinion mind you.

You should do both at the same time.
Learn a kanji and a word that's written with it, repeat. You should also learn how to make basic sentences.
After you got a bit of vocabulary under your belt so you don't have look up everything, start augmenting vocabulary learning with reading or listening or playing video games or whatever that forces you to use the language.
If you don't understand something look it up, it will be really slow using a new language at the start but it will get better very fast when you are a beginner.

Just because you are forced to learn to speak a language as a kid to communicate it doesn't mean it's the most efficient way, especially when most people can't put themselves into a situation where they absolutely need a new language unless they don't know english already.

Interpreting empirical observations wrong is still wrong, he jumps to the conclusion that because babies learn to talk surrounded by the language naturally it must be the most efficient way to learn.

He completely ignores why we have linguistics and why adults can take advantage of understanding the language on mechanical level.

While grammar rules and vocabulary drills are methods to make this process faster, they're not something that can replace the process.

He suggests we throw the baby out with the bathwater by just ignoring all these helpful tools.

If you are fine learning a bit slower by doing what you like instead of using the learning tools, that's fine. Don't just say the tools are useless especially for people who are more analytical learners.

I wasn't going to, but since you asked to earnestly, I feel like I have to reply seriously otherwise my nihongo pass will be revoked.
So, first things first, drop learning hiragana and katakana because it's basically the baby version of the language, and it's equivalent to learning how to read, write and speak from Tommy Pickles. Cut straight to kanji, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English.

Good luck, cunt.

>Hell, you probably can't even understand the damn guide you're reading
I am aware I am not actually correctly reading the Japanese sentences in the guide, but indeed for now I am studying only the grammar logic.
It isn't my intention to skip the proper readings and memorize hiragana, katakana and common kanjis, simply doing it as the second step because grammar looks like an easier start. Merely changing the order based on difficulty for me.
If you think I am not aware romaji is inaccurate, don't worry, I got that myself already.
I also plan to read again everything about grammar as the third step, but this time also focusing on actually reading the examples properly.

>I bet you've already so many "common mistakes" that at this point recovering would be pretty much impossible
I asked for the precise reason of knowing them, so care to give me some insight?

>Tell me, are you by chance one of those guys who think they can rush the acquisition process and get fluent in a language in less than 6 months?
Obviously not. Japanese is not my second language so I am aware of how long it can take.
It's 7 years and I am barely fluent in English.

All I did in this post is explaining my current method. I am open to suggestion for something more effective.
