I'm not sure if these are new bits of info, but just to add to the touhou lore:

- hell is "mind-bogglingly" huge and that seems to make it difficult to single out someone's spirit
- Komachi's abilities of distance manipulation are not exclusive to her but something she shares with other shinigami
- Sanae is a horrible miko and her two-bit barriers won't work on anybody

Reimu's shrine area is pretty large. That they went all over it and didn't ask that turtle-man from the old games anything means he's really gone. What was that area they went into a the end? Somewhere underneath the shrine? Did Clownpiece open a hell portal for Reimu?

I agree that she is a likely candidate, but not because of her role here. ZUN has never made a non spinoff game that requires you too have read the manga or other printworks too understand whats going on. I doubt he is going too change that and the conflict going on right now is going too be maintained in the manga.
However, ZUN has clearly taken a liking too Tenshi more and more recently so seeing her pop up alot is getting pretty standard, so her inclusion in the next game is pretty likely.

Reimu seemed extremely lackadaisical despite having fought something super dangerous. Even she can flip over that kind of damage. She doesn't remember what happened recently, I guess.

I find it hard to believe that Kasen did something wrong given her character development. Think her arm itself went wild (because it hasn't gone through the reforms and changes she has)?

I completely agree, I think ZUN realized plot was a mistake at some point and dialed back, but it sucked the secondaries in who just care about the ideas and don't actually visit the setting through the games. Aside from, you know, the small little things like the introduction of the Spell Card rules in EoSD, the breaking down of the boarder between Gensokyo and the Netherworld in PCB, the Eientei crew being forced out of hiding and integrating themselves into society following :IN, the Moriya bunch showing up in MoF, the Moriya bunch bringing nuclear power to Gensokyo in SA, the introduction of Buddhists in UFO and Taoists in TD, and so on.

But, yeah, other than all that stuff? Totally unchanging. Yep.

Its almost like you're completely forgetting that ZUN's approach too the lore is too go wider rather than deeper. Too introduce new characters and elements into the mix rather than explore existing things in further detail. This is specifically because of its role as a major doujin series. ZUN cant go too hard with certain things because he wants too keep alot of stuff open too interpretation for fanworks too explore. This is why he is so careful. Fanworks really cant explore the connection between Merry and Yukari if ZUN gives a definitive answer for example. ZUN doesn't want too be definitive for the sake of fanworks, which as some might disagree is no doubt as important too Touhou as the actual canon material.

Part of the appeal of the series is that it never gets too serious, so even seemingly major incidents routinely end with everybody becoming friends and drinking tea together. For example, ZUN wrote in the music comments for one of the fairy manga CDs that he could imagine a fairy collecting bugs on the side of the SDM while the Scarlet Mist incident was taking place. The mental image that description produces, of the protagonists battling to solve an incident while just a small distance away children are innocently playing around, has always stuck out in my mind as embodying the nature of the setting. Gensokyo is really strange and there's a sense of hidden danger behind everything yet at the same time it's totally peaceful and unchanging. So to complain about ZUN refusing to blow up the status quo for the sake of writing a more exciting plot strikes me as missing the entire point of the series.
