Anybody here who has read the first 北へ for the Dreamcast? I'm a newbie so I suck at kanji and I can't really read the menu or manual that comes with the game. I was wondering if there is any option to turn off the autoscrolling for the voiced dialogue?

I understand the dialogue fine and in-game I'm using the handwrite option to look up the kanji and it works well for the most part. I've looked up the options but I can't seem to find anything relevant for autoscrolling. I might've translated it wrong or maybe that's just how the game is built. That's why I asked here if anyone knew for sure.

The game doesn't work with any emulator I've tried either.

They have two major sins against them.

First, the 3D is fucking awful. The camera is a disaster. When you introduce a gameplay issue like that to a series where the gameplay is supposed to smooth over the writing issues, bad things happen.

Second, they're basically fanfic prequels, akin to Fate/Zero; written by someone else with the ending already set in stone, but they're going to go through the motions and include characters from the other game anyway. And without something like Urobuchi's cult-like fan following, you get the purists shitting on it too just for being not written by Hiei.

Now, that said, Heart and Bringer have made it obvious that Hiei's success with Force and Sky was a fluke. The above things aside, and they are genuine issues, I wouldn't say it's any worse than those two. It's just another really mediocre cyberpunk game with all the usual dumb fucking WHAT A TWEEST secret brains in jars and was an AI all along crap.

Looks great. I admit, I don't particularly like the overused onii-chan, especially from characters unrelated to protag, but this seems to be fun beyond that. Plus, you still hear it anyway.

Would've been fancy if they just dubbed the word "dude" with a similar sounding voice and replaced onii-chan with it. It'd be the meme.

I'm not sure you can say it like that. It does mean brother, but it's used in a way you tend to not use it in other places. Girls in eroge especially start to use it, when they see a big brother in the protag. There's honestly no different implication than "I see you as my big brother". The only thing is, there's no blood relation. But it's not like most "real" little sisters have those in eroge either. So it's the same. The exact same.

Also, there's a world of difference between nii-chan and onii-chan dude. There's also sarcasm and so on and so forth. Speaking of vampires, I'm reading Bloody Rondo right now. The MC gets bit by Luna right at the beginning, so shouldn't he be a vampire? He thought about it right when he got bit but the game hasn't mentioned it at all since.

According to the rules of the world, it appears the kind of vampire he became wouldn't have the blood sucking urges, so there appears to be no real consequences to it other than maybe having to serve Luna, but you think it would at least be mentioned occasionally that he's a vampire now, which it hasn't.

Anyway the game kind of sucks, nothing happens and the girls aren't that cute.

firstly, i can't take sama honorific seriously if the character is supposed to be a mischievous little devil. she should've just called him onii-san or ani or whatever.

secondly, the other choice is just as bad if not worse because now she's suddenly using -san attached to his first name. i imagine the vast majority of people kept her using onii-sama just because it sounds more intimate.

i'm assuming they are saving the straight up first name calling for the fandisc, but thats kinda lame since MC starts calling her by first name immediately

I accidentally got on the gaijin's route and stopped to restart on mizuha's route but I got bored just after the time skip and dropped it. I went back downloaded a 100% save to confirm this and jesus, I wasn't expecting that at all. I remember it being such a wholesome route that got kinda dull, does it really just go downhill?

It had me glued to the screen until the goddess starts eating a raw package of instant ramen. From there on, the tone of the story clearly becomes goofy with a bit of macabre humour from having a deadly goddess in your home that might eat you. She actually eats you in a bad end. I loved that kind of humour mixed with the mythic background of the setting, a half abandoned temple, but not sure if the later will keep going, or it will become some kind of Buffy Vampire Slayer.

Haven't read enough Romeo to make a judgement on the writing, but it looked very similar in both storytelling and jokes to Tsujidou-san, only better written.

Sugar*Style (the Prologue trial), had the same kind of gag jokes as M*L. So if you liked that, definitely try it out.

they got me. the fact that she looks like Akari from M*L is just a bonus. nice to see they kept the exaggerated faces from their previous work.

reading the story/plot synopsis, it really feels like they ran with the same idea as reina's route (dorm with MC + girls) but just stuck every girl into the dorm instead of just one + a couple of side charas like in M*L. i like how every heroine is an adult, but i don't like how linear the plot makes it sound; one of the highlights of M*L imo was how different each route was from each other. kind of a shame all the date mechanics were pretty much useless, hopefully smee has fixed that problem or removed it entirely.

The voices were all good and apt, but there is a clear level difference.
Maybe with Kaname, the white haired, you could tell she was a new seyuu during the normal dialogue. She plays the quiet type that becomes funny/sarcastic/sadic at points.
Hare (pink hair) was quite fine from the start. A bit tsundere but without getting too gimmicky. She might be the surprise in this eroge.

You don't know how much you need that feature until you don't have it anymore. Going through Amakano 2S atm and it has tons of other features like a pubic hair toggle and a super easy way to repeat voiced lines in the log but no 'jump to' in the log is heresy I say!

iirc it did pretty well overall, but maybe not enough. The studio was having budget issues before that and that culminated in Anaoto which was a super lazy release and looked worse than their past two titles, honestly. I would say it's a shame but I only really enjoyed Sukisuki and Haretaka. The rest of their stuf varied a lot in quality, at least as far as I remember.

I got stuck in FF6 in Zozo where you have to jump from one building to another. It wasn't immediately obvious where you need to go to make the jump, so I spent several weeks stuck there grinding.

That was back when I didn't have a PC or anything, just PS1 and few games.

Honestly, I really enjoyed Torta's route as is. Actually so much, that I just considered it done back then. I really loved how the ending played out, once I started to see where it wanted to go.

But I guess I'm an exception. I know a lot of people aren't satisfied until they get a super happy ending. I think differently there. And it was just presented so well.

That logic doesn't make any sense to me. This isn't a moege with unrelated heroine routes, it's a coherent story with questions, answers and a message. You haven't even grasped the point of the game at that point. It's like reading the first 200 pages of a 400 page book and going "Wow that was really awesome. i had a PC back then but that was back during the AOL ages and game info was not a high priority to say the least. gamefaqs had just launched in 95 but stayed relatively unknown until ff7 released. back then there was a lot of personal blogs posted on geocities and other places that would have tons of info about one game or a series. so many bad websites with terrible fonts and clashing colors
