I don't know about on press, but they definitely have different sounds on release if you kinda slide your finger off of the edge of the buttons so they can snap up with different speed/force/vibration, but even then I wouldn't expect many people to be able to tell the difference.

Why is IIDX considered harder or more skillful than DDR? More keys equates to lower density. Seems like the most skillful rhythm game is whichever one most people are playing most frequently, assuming there isn't some giant player skill gap and we aren't comparing something 20 years old to something 3 years old. Obviously the bar would be way lower for a game like Frequency because no one plays it.

I googled it and it looks like updates are inbound (as of 5 months ago). I have third world internet here, so I just assumed maybe my game didn't update, but here we are, with a fun, albeit barebones (also easy), rhythm game.

The PW is really pretty and I haven’t heard any complaints about the TT at all. However modding the fp7’s isn’t really hard. Either just some good glue or a gripper tarp. If you wanna get the PW and change the microswitches yourself, that’s the most cost effective/quality option.

Underlying point being that if we switched games it would take him many times longer to reach my skill on SM than it would take me to reach his skill on IIDX and if you throw money on the table I'd be willing to do it

stepmania is a hard game for sure. but what game with community generated content isn't? i haven't played much iidx due to location but it seemed difficult as a stepmania player since sm makes you think statically about the lanes and you need to be flexible with your technique in iidx. it's not really wise to put down either game. you can't argue whether completing a simple task (sm relative to iidx) at a higher level of proficiency or a more complex one at a lower level of proficiency is more difficult since difficulty is defined by how hard it is to be the best and that is unchanging with equally dedicated communities.
