That 2ch English thread posted in the previous djt is interesting. Well, it's interesting how you take for granted which words are appropriate in a given context. They're using loose synonyms in contexts where they don't sound right:
>I've learned English conversation for six months, and realized that I'm ill at conversation rather than English.
Obviously you can see why they thought they would fit. Language is gay.

Its easy to do 100 words a day for a while, but eventually you'll have 1000 reviews per day and blackhole of memory loss, and want to shoot yourself. Don't go over 50 or you'll regret it. List memory isn't the same as contextualized/emotional language memory. You really need to be getting your vocab from content or adding your own context media to your srs.

Russia. I had to help cut lumber every day and I missed school during the spring season so we could make enough money. Our family saved up enough so we could move to America in '99, we had a two-day stopover in Tokyo that left an impression on me since. Once we moved to Montana, my time after school would have to help work on the tree farm until I was old enough to move away, now I'm learning Japanese so I can hopefully one day leave this country and my family for good. I just got started last week.

There were very limited things to do in our neck of the woods as our daily income came primarily from the main city which was an hour's drive away (which is where my school was). Timber thieves often logged multiple lots that were under our jurisdiction so sometimes we spent nights in below freezing temperatures on the lookout to deter them. Usually convoys would travel during dry weather past our border loaded with trucks to log our forests and we'd have to fire warning shots to keep them away or at least move them outside our jurisdiction. I remember the year we left, it got so bad that the military actually cordoned off parts of the road and detaining anyone without ID.

殺す to kill
殺しあう to kill each other, to fight to the death

話す to speak
話し合う to speak with each other, to discuss

I like Heisig's Kanji books and all, but learning kana by equating it's form to an idea (kneecaps) is just wrong. The kana should be as inherent as your native alphabet. Having to do mental gymnastics for each character is absurd. I guess some people need it though.

If anyone here is just starting Japanese, just take the first month and learn Hiragana & Katakana completely. Repeat the lessons until you can write, speak, recall, and understand each kana without effort. Learning vocab & grammar after that is easier than you would think.

Kanji is where you need the Heisig book/other workbook to really help you along. Kanji sucks, I know, but it's important, and really divides those that "speak Japanese desu," from those that can actually translate. Take it slow, don't overwhelm yourself, don't risk burnout.

>> No.20489682

>>20489647
Oh for fuck's sake, don't be dramatic. The RTKana mnemonics are to make sure you're consistent with drawing the parts when you hear the sound. に is the left side of け and こ, if you remember the left side as CAPE, then think of a reason COMB is used, then you have the two strokes and how to write it. Like all mnemonics, they go away cause you've written and read the characters so often, but as a starting point it works great without the need to write the same character 20 times.

RTKana is just a six hour book anyway. It's not essential, but it's not dangerous like you're trying to make it out to be. RTKanji is more like a 150 hour book, but people like to call that dangerous as well. They're just resources to use as each sees fit.

>There are no conjugations, just helper verbs
Wrong. There are conjugations, but most of them can't stand alone and have to have a helper verb or particle added on. The imperative is a distinct conjugation that does not involve a helper verb.

>Japanese has future-tense. Dictionary form (e.g. 食べる) are future-tense by default
Wrong. Verbs are non-past by default, which includes present, habitual, future, and non-temporal tenses. There is no distinct future tense, and typically adverbs are used to make it explicit.

>There are no silent sounds/sounds that disappear, only unvoiced
Correct for standard Japanese, but whispered vowels are often elided at the end of a word. All this goes out the window in dialects and extremely informal speech.

>furigana is not how a word is officially pronounced, it's how you are suppose to pronounce it and/or how characters say it. It just so happens to match up with the official pronunciation almost all of the time
This doesn't even make sense. Furigana is originally meant to indicate the pronunciation of a word written with kanji, either because the kanji are uncommon enough that the average reader wouldn't know how to pronounce it or because the text is aimed at a student who hasn't learned the kanji yet.
Sometimes furigana is used to give a non-standard reading to a word for impact, but this is mostly a manga and LN thing.

>>20489737
The language is not simple, it just expresses complex structure in different ways than conjugated languages.
Usually this means having to memorize an insanely complex set of rules for word order (Chinese) or having particles that indicate the declension of nouns (Hawaiian, Japanese)

>Wrong. There are conjugations, but most of them can't stand alone and have to have a helper verb or particle added on. The imperative is a distinct conjugation that does not involve a helper verb.
The only "conjugations" are to make the stem of the verb, and that's really just a sound change on a technical level. I expect you to understand the difference but I don't expect you to know that a sound change is not a conjugation, so I forgive you for this one.

>Wrong. Verbs are non-past by default, which includes present, habitual, future, and non-temporal tenses. There is no distinct future tense, and typically adverbs are used to make it explicit.
Verbs are future by default and only because present tense with context. You will always have context so the closest and only way to see this is to make a sentence with only a verb in plain form.

1. Just plain wrong.
2. Past and non-past.
3. What about germination?
4. Kind of right, but it's completely wrong from how you put it. The gojuuon, and by extension furigana, accurately represents the phonemic transcription of Japanese words for the most part.
Phonetically speaking, they're only sort of helpful. ん is the worst culprit here, representing at least 6 different consonant sounds.

Pay attention to how native speakers pronounce words like ほん、まんこ、はんぱ、めんどう、めんひょう, and you will see ん rear its ugly head. In any case, stuff like this is useful to pay attention to as a language learner for any language, in order for you to sound like a native.

I think many people here just have some kind of fear of forgetting, the fear of all this practice invested being for nothing so they rather just use anki which gives the feeling that you keep what you learned and gives you the feeling that you progress in your japanese studies. Classes are pretty much worthless when it comes to language learning. Start a vocab deck in anki that has like 2000 words and grind it until you complete it. Try 20 words a day but reduce it if it's too much to handle, either in terms of effort or time. Meanwhile start reading Tae Kim's grammar guide and consume additional resources on grammar like Cure Dolly's youtube videos. Start reading when you feel like it but don't put it off too long. By the first or second month you should probably try reading basic manga or even more advanced material that you find to be more interesting. When you finish the vocab deck start adding random words you encounter while reading that stick out to you. The longer you do this the more important it is to read and listen because that's how you'll learn the most. Once you start reading you should never spend more time with anki than reading, and you should always try to spend 30 minutes or less a day with anki. Within the first couple months your reading and listening time should add up to a minimum of 3 hours a day. The more you improve the easier it will be to immerse, and if you feel like it you could start spending 6+ hours with immersion. Do this every day for 2 years and you'll easily be N2. N1 is possible.

No one really sticks around that long to really tell. The moment someone here gets in the flow you never hear from them again. You will find mostly beginners and crappy amateurs in this thread. Most people will drop the hobby after a couple of months or earlier. I know in the golden age where DJT were on /a/ there were a lot of committed NEETs that managed to get really good in under 2 years. the manga is worse (fight me the anime adds a lot of neat stuff and has infinitely better artwork) but obviously it doesn't hurt to try both.

most people in here are monolingual english speakers with a distorted view on how difficult it is to learn any language. I bet you if anime originated from germany or france, these faggots would still complain about german and french being 'impossible'. language learning is universally easy for literally everyone, since communication by spoken language is one of the staples of the human species. being able to learn languages is literally in your genes, regardless of ethnicity or upbringing.

Anki is not necessary if you're doing passive recognition which is what most here likely do anyway. Reason being, if you're immersing, you're getting passive recognition.

If you're doing more difficult part of "writing" the word or "translating" from English to Japanese, then Anki is great as it reduces the need to brute force repeat writing or translating the same word dozens of times. However, you don't need these skills to get good at reading and listening.

I'm starting to think there is no real learning "technique", if you really want to learn it, it just happens. If they're doing something that's not working they'll realize it eventually. You can use music, manga, anime, ln's or whatever as long as you're doing it the right way and actually learning the material. You can only learn so much consciously, and vice versa the subconcious has limits too. Staying balanced between passion and effectiveness is the only tip you need.
