why would you read manga when you could read novels? i feel like manga is nothing more than a means to end, getting you from tae kim to light novels. i honestly dont think there are enough fun mangas out there that you could get to n1 like uwa-poster

you would read manga because you are interested in the story... same reason you would read a book. you don't just read books because they are books right? there has to be something of interest otherwise you are torturing yourself like you're in school and doing required readings. and depending on the manga the vocabulary can be much more difficult than any normal front shelf novel due to being otaku media etc.

baka, you know I can't read that.

Yeah I know, I don't even want to read (I'm not even fox and the grapes'ing). But I kinda already struggle with the kana in Tae Kim because I only ever SRSed it a bit and I'm pretty insecure if I read a word correctly. So I though reading some larger text in plain kana would be beneficial. But I don't want to learn 2000 kanji just to achieve that.

Manabi reader is pretty helpful, since it has a ton of different articles/books to read (even Reddit), and you can find the definition of a word by simply tapping on it. Some articles also show what level it is (n5-n1) so that should help as well. It does have some furigana, but there are also western style spaces, so make your choice.

>> No.20700171

Assuming your not trolling you shouldn't avoid kanji. There's no point in just learning kana. Read an simple vn like hanabira. When you scan kanji you have to read the reading in hiragana so your practicing everything in the order of importance. Other than that just get one of the kana Anki decks and blast through it you will eventually learn. Don't worry about mixing up katakana in the begging just recognize your mistakes and move on.

I tried a few of those readers, but I haven't found any where you can switch to kana only and funi is annoying and too small. Also it's mostly news or some random ass articles. I would prefer childrens books or something. I'm quite surprised that such material seems so hard to come by. It's like everybody wan't to go from zero to new york times articles.

>>20700171
I have no use for written japanese except for the learning materials. Luckily enough most seem to kinda let you get away with kana and it really helps with the pronunciation. But kanji is complete waste of time if you are not planning on reading anything.

>> No.20700212

idk man just do it anyway. kana isn't even a big deal. scan a bunch of words with yomichan and practice that way as the other anon suggested. i did that before i even started reading and it helped a lot. it should only take a few weeks at most for it to become really really easy to remember the kana.

Look you don't have to listen to some random dude on the internet. But I have seen this many times. Reading and Listening are simply not the same things, and please believe me when I say that you cripple yourself with the subs. This is basically the same mistake especially the japanese people do. They are so incredibly good with written engrish, I would argue even better than the average american. But when it comes to understanding or speaking, they are completely lost. I guarantee you that when you turn off subs and watch daily anime for three weeks max, you will be at the same level as reading.

Btw. I'm at 3 months and I feel already comfortable watching Totoro. I suppose I understand about 75% of the words and probably 95% from context, but I'm sure I'm missing / misunderstanding many grammar related things. But it's an incredibly easy movie, so there is that.

1h a day, yes sorry. I think it's a reasonable investment. Some neets here invest(ed) way more, but of course that's not feasible for anyone and I guess you have to be a pretty intense person, to do such a thing.

1-2 weeks for kana is completely fine and normal. You shouldn't listen too much to what other people say. This is not a contest and you can't trust random people on the net.

I'm not the expert on kanji, since I only know about 3 or 4. There are many different ways and I presume in the end the results will be pretty much the same. If you want to read books and games and stuff I would choose a route that introduces words from the beginning. Otherwise you will invest months in learning random symbols, that have no real meaning until later.

My advice comes from experience with learning other languages, like for example english. And believe me when I say that I have seen many people struggle with listening comprehension and it's always the same pattern. If you watch with subs you will loose your concentration after a short period of time and your brain will only read the subs. It's the evolutionary smart thing to do, brain processing power is expensive and it will always go for the shortcuts.

Can you read this post written by khatz without looking up any kanji

You want the speed to be slow enough that you can process what's being said but not so slow that you cripple yourself. Known words are also important so you can actually learn to parse the words. I'd say known words is more important by far because you need to know what's actually being said but I assume he actually means knowing all the words or knowing maybe half of them... in which case, I'd just say do the known words and slow down the audio to maybe .80 or .70 of natural speed.

My point is anon's Japanese is at the level that he can consume pretty much anything and still get something out of it, so it doesn't really matter what he chooses. Also talk of i+1 doesn't apply because if one can read a sentence that can't be understood through listening, i.e. it's in one's i already, then the meaning of that sentence will eventually become clear through repeated listening no matter how complex it is which wouldn't be true for a sentence that isn't i or i+1. other half from proper mining i kept reviewing when i stopped adding cards and started to take reading more seriously but i consider that more wasted time
by the time i really started to feel like my vocab was growing after all that extra work in anki seemed very inefficient
if i were to theorize id say that the shit you got in anki is divided into two categories
theres shit that youre doing alright on which youll get down fine through continued exposure in reading
and theres shit that youre having a hard time getting down which youre not really ready for without running into more contextual examples and related words and you are wasting your time on trying to force it
that second category also stands out when youre reading and makes you feel like you aint learnin shit but you just gotta relax and let the nihongo come to you while you just focus on enjoying the content
my experience is hardly controlled enough to be evidence though

To those who choose not to take the JLPT, why? I searched the archives a little bit but found nothing relevant (if I missed it give me a link). I have studied Japanese for a few years, but have never been interested in the JLPT, and don’t see myself taking it in the future. I’m interested in hearing why other learners decide not to take it/ have no interest in the JLPT, if anyone cares to share.

My reasons are:
>Never believed standardized tests were a good way to measure ones ability.
>Don’t foresee my future where a certification like that will be required.
>After having studied from various JLPT books (mosty grammar), realized that constantly reading native material helps me remember new grammar points better than studying them in the abstract.
>Don’t like that it only tests reading and listening.

Having said that, this isn’t a post to shit on the JLPT or be like “why do people even take it?!” I know it’s really valuable for some people’s futures, and other people like the motivational aspect of test taking, or want to see how they compare to others, etc. Just interested about why others decide not to take it.

Most of them are so bad they can't even pass n1, and I took japanese in college for a year and didn't learn shit. I learned more in a month of neetdom then I did that whole year. It's a snowball effect. When you have all that time to anime, read, and anki they all help eachother and your progress will be pretty rapid. You're forgetting like 93% of what you learn so it's more of a constant exposure thing than anything. Speaking of which I need to close this tab and get back to it.

>core2k is already enough to start reading with easy and create your own deck that way. You will learn faster words, you picked up from context.
>grinding 10k is boring to most people and not worth the effort
>the deck is generally pretty bad from 6k to 10k

I kinda agree, but I have to say, that a major selling point of the core decks is the audio. I hate doing decks without audio or with artificial audio, because I'm always pronouncing it a little bad when I only read it. I'm hoping for the Tango decks though, there is really hope for a better 10k deck this time.

There are also verbs that conjugate regularly, but you have to know about 400 of those stupid irregular ones. Then there are grammatical cases and tenses, male and female, singular and plural and shit like that. For example english has 12 common tenses and some additional crazy ones. Every language is different and has different challenges, but compared to that, japanese is easy even compared to english which is already pretty laughable.

Oh maybe I should clarify, because for an english speaker this is probably not obvious. The verb we try to conjugate in frenche here is "aller" which means "to go". So the list there is the same as:
I go
you go
he / she goes
we go
you go
they go
past - went (pretty strange and irregular, isn't it)

Imagine doing this for hundrets of irregular verbs and even for the regular ones there are quite some different categories with different rules. Of course the most common verbs are always the worst (even with japanese), but still.

How is 思 used?

I'm very new to learning the language so I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm trying to understand how 思 is used.

I can't figure out how to type it, the best I've been able to manage so far is either going to google translate to use the handwriting recognition, then copy/pasting or I recently found I can type shiu to get 思羽 then I can backspace off the 羽.

Where I've seen it most lately is in the word 思ってる (or 思っている) which I think means "a continuous state of thinking" or something like that. I've seen that romanized as ommatte(i)ru, but it seems like the kanji itself is し. It also seems to be written out as おま sometimes, are those just alternate readings?

Does it just mean think by itself, or does it need to be written as 思う to mean think?

I think it highly depends on what you want to achieve. If you simply want to be able to read japanese text, don't fail it. However you will have a hard time to go to spoken japanese later like this. It's a common trap for people who highly immerse in written content only. You basically are doing kanji -> english meaning and are skipping japanese.

well you haven't bothered to demonstrate why learning to write kanji from the beginning of one's studies is detrimental to attaining fluency, that's why I suspect your position is dogmatic. but anyway, how many beginners really start out by only studying RTK and nothing else, aside from AJATT shills?

kaufmann fucking sucks at nip compared to matt but that's not really a bad thing since most people do. we established on djt months ago that of the public japanese learners only dogen is better in terms of output, but based on matt's testimony (which we can trust because he's a trustworthy man who owns up to his mistakes such as with RTK) he got such massive amounts of input that dogen couldn't possibly compare in terms of comprehension.
