this homo language would be easier to learn if kanjis didn't have two readings, sometimes more, and the kun/on rules have too many exceptions to make it an actual rule

and you expect me to learn 2k of those?

The sheer volume of vocabulary you need to know to read books (written for adults) is so massive that it actually makes anki inefficient. i mean to say that anki cant keep up with the amount of words you can naturally learn in context without doing thousands of anki reviews a day or taking 3 years like matt did at 10 cards a day

was gonna post my thoughts on something im experiencing similarly. I've been using anki to learn both kanji and the associated words at the same time, and I've hit a brick wall at around 1100 words. The amount of reviewing I have to do every day just to have to send a good 20% back for the next upcoming days makes it incredibly hard to progress.
Another side complaint is that I still can't really make out what I'm hearing in most jap videos or anime and whatnot despite having an OK foundation at this point. Fuckin sucks.

big huge fat fucking lie. i could read for 4 hours today and maybe somewhat remember the readings of 5 of the most frequent new words i come across. and i say "somewhat" because some i'll remember well and others will take more exposure. whereas i can spend 10 minutes in anki and get through 10 new words+reviews.

this is why anki+reading is the supreme method.

>> No.20716528

ankidrones cant comprehend the fact that reading doesnt cause you to """memorize""" 10 words a day it causes you to make small progress in hundreds of words a day so obviously if you try to compare reading to anki in terms of the numbers game youre playin with anki its gonna feel like a failure in comparison but if you chill out and let the nihongo wash over you you may reach enlightenment

if you learn more in 10 minutes of anki compared to 4 hours of reading then:

you are at native level and come across such few new words that are incredibly rare (in which case what are you doing here?).

you are a noob who is overwhelmed with new words and can't learn them since they don't have a decent vocabulary yet since every almost every sentence has a new word in it

Some tips I picked up:
1. Try to find words related to eachother (brain likes stories)
2. Only do around 15 min at a time (timeboxing)
3. Make sure you use audio (makes it easier and bonus helps listening skills)
4. You should mine it from content so you relate to it better and pictures dont hurt but don't waste too much time on that
5. Do all of you new cards at the end, it fucks your head up having to do new cards and old card together
6. Make your last interval at least 1 hour away so there's a bit of a blast off for your next day

I'm getting extremely good results with this method.

You aren't retarded it's just confusing when you are getting started. You read something in japanese and come across the word 大きい. You cant read it and you don't know any other words that use that kanji. So you open google handwriting recognition and draw in 大 then you can type in きい after that and throw it into a dictionary. It will tell you it's read おおきい and means big. move onto the next word and repeat. it's really slow at first but it gets exponentially faster up to a point where you can pretty much guess the reading of every new word or at least type the kanji out really quickly into a dictionary, and then you really only need to handwrite recognize the rarer kanji that are only used in a couple words

This is for those who have developed a basic understanding for Japanese and can manage through anime/manga/games, even if they have to rely on dictionaries. I'll try to keep it brief:

Is is worth it for me to keep trying to learn Japanese? I've done it probably for probably close to two years now. I've gone through all the concepts in Genki while learning the sentences and vocabulary in the chapter along with many supplementary sentences and vocabulary, and now that I see that I'm completely lost even approaching the simplest of Japanese, I'm making sure, (with Anki), that I can fluently read, and hear every sentence in Genki, as long as every vocabulary word that I think I will come across. This is just to give you an idea of my progress. If it's of any importance, I'm only trying to learn how to develop a fluency for hearing and reading Japanese, and not to write or speak it, as I have no desire to communicate with those who speak Japanese. I think this would be compensated by increasing my vocabulary and becoming more familiar with the words I know.

My motive: I really love Japanese games, but I feel a sense of mental atrophy as I play them, and I'm hoping that the challenge of trying to play them in a foreign language while trying to understand everything will make them more engaging. Same basic principle applies to anime, but I dislike dubs, and I don't like having to read subtitles when I rather pay attention to the screen.

Any remarks about whether learning Japanese was worth it for you, or whether you think it would be worth it in my position. I understand I'm sure that I gave you an incomplete picture of my circumstances and motives, but any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Japanese doesn't work like that, there is no rhyme or reason of the usage of kanji, it's just tradition and history.
There are patterns but there are no rules, if you treat these patterns as rules you'll have to remember about as many exceptions as you learn words where these patterns work.

Okay guys here's some advice that comes from the heart:

Do NOT do RTK if you have already learned 2k just by recognizing the Words/Kanji as random scribblings.
It will fuck you up. Before doing RTK i could recognize
shit like 雑誌 easily but now that i know these Kanji it's like "Uh... Miscellaneous and Document... What the fuck is this?"

Basically it's like that entire work my Brain had done before of recognizing entire Kanji as "images" is gone now and i have to relearn most of the vocabs.
I'm 1100 characters into RTK so i won't drop it but yeah, if you WANT to do RTK then do it before learning vocab. Fuck.

Maybe i'm just a retard though, but this does seem like the kind of thing that would fuck up your brains already established memories of these things.

Do any of you guys have the issue that you sometimes forget easy, matured vocabulary?

Idk what the "anime speech" in nnb you're talking about is, but if you are a beginner who's had 0 input, worrying about that is putting the cart way before the horse. Just watch any good simple comedy or slice of life cartoon, be prepared to have to look up a lot of words. In terms of difficulty you should be afraid of shit like snk or youjo senki.

You can learn what live speech sounds like later by listening to streamers on youtube or something. It's not a different language so don't sweat it.

It's an ongoing argument in actual linguistic study as to whether or not written language is language or just a representation of language. One this is certain: You can be illiterate and still fluent. Put more emphasis on hearing the right words over being able to identify kanji. Fluency is being able to speak/listen without needing to translate in your head and/or pause to think. Fluency has nothing to do with reading skills. Fluency and literacy are two separate things and right now you seem to be more focused on literacy.

is sentence mining a meme?
how do i sentence mine properly?
i don't know which sentences to mine.
if i just mined every sentence i don't fully i'd be at 500 cards in an hour.

also, should i use Anki for grammar reviews? there has been a discussion about intellectual knowledge vs. intellectual knowledge, as in you don't have to KNOW grammar rules intellectually to be able to recognize the patterns, and therefore doing Anki reviews of grammar is not needed. Instead, you should just read through a grammar guide and then refer back to it whenever you notice a grammatical element and you can't remember how it works.

Posting in these threads instead of actually learning is killing me btw.

language acquisition doesn't work like that, you don't just remember words individually. in those 4 hours you're going to encounter thousands of words and you'll strengthen each one of them very slightly, so that after months your vocabulary will be larger than if you had used that time for flashtarding and you'll have a better understand of those words through seeing them in different contexts. if you had kept reading you would have noticed this
