Several weeks back I went through the denpa thread collection from beginning to end, exposing myself to many years of denpa music.
I attached a photograph of some CDs and other denpa and doujin music goods that I ordered recently, partially influenced by my listening experience. Alongside them are around 20-30 Kanon, Air and other VN arrangement albums.

I've been collecting doujin and denpa CDs for around two, three years now, but my biggest dive in was after one of you shared Morinaga Tohko's "nagobest" compilation album. After purchasing it for myself, I noticed a DVD which wasn't included with the collection's files, that had video passages of Morinaga Tohko's friends talking of her doujin work, as well as several of her other songs over the duration of her career(1997-2007). This prompted me to look farther and farther back to the history of doujin music, and the entwined denpa scene that popped from within it. So I'd like to thank the other collectors for sharing and keeping the older tunes alive - many of them would otherwise be lost to time.

>>20831978
The limited edition is very impressive. It includes plenty of commentary from Mi-ko and Kayamori about the featured songs and the band, which is honestly better than any other Mosaic.wav merchandise that could be included. I'll send photos of the contents at a later date.

Spotfy is really the thing nowdays, even denpa artists are putting their stuff there.

Denpa artists on spotfy (at least what I know):

ちょこ ( very recently added, 1 album so far)
Zero-Shaft (enjoy guys, ALL FUCKING ALBUMS, they were an amazing circle)
TWINKLE (the best off)
NEKO HACKER (not EXACTLY denpa, but denpa does not have a strict definition after all)
NAYUTA
NANAHIRA (some stuff)
MOMOBAKO (mostly her "future bass stuff", but METAL PASSION is there)
KOKO
KANO
IOSYS of course their denpa collection is what I'm talking about, but if you're in /jp/ I guess you enjoy touhou dj as well, so enjoy
DEMPAGUMI
evenなゆ stuff in on spotfy (She is not active anymore, right?)
momoi halko
MOSAIC.WAV (and they finally organized and removed the horrible ROMAJI)
KOTO (Not denpa, but fuck... her last album is soo good)

if you know more... help us

of course obscure denpa artists (although all denpa artists are obscure, there are the obscure ones of the obscure ones) like 33.turbo, doubleeven uppercut, きゃらめる, さとうみるく and so on will never be added but we have our efficient sharing of flacs in this case

I definitely think in the past several years, at least since 2013, denpa music has converged into cutesy moe denpa. It's becoming harder and harder to discern one song from another.

I feel denpa vocalists and circles like Choko, Nayuta, Twinkle, Nanahira, Momobako, Poyahchio have reached an end point when it comes to their works - an over-saturated field of cute, of nasal high-pitched moe without character. Denpa today is very far from its roots of galge arrangements, both in composition and in lyrics. The originality is also seen through the depth in which a moe character is portrayed in the singing - not by being a caricature of moe, but genuinely acting out a character out of a manga or game. The "moe" of that time was much more romantic.

My hopes for 2019 are an IOSYS denpa album, though realistically ARM, D.watt, Uno and Shatyou are all so involved within other circles and Konami that it's unlikely. Mosaic.wav and Toromi are still going strong, so that's something, too.

>> No.20837375

>>20837333
I agree 100%

cute moe is the trend now among denpa vocalists.
I have no problems with it, since I enjoy cute moe, but it is like you said: over-satured.
Indeed, mosaic.wav and toromi are legends and they still releasing good stuff. Nanahira is worth mentioning, some albuns are really the same, but some "recent" albums have the "funny aspects" of the old denpa like ばーさす! (2014) and Wonder trick (2016)

My fear is of the latest trend: future-bass denpa (like momobako recent albums). If it gets popular among other artists then denpa has really reached an evolutionary point that displeases me a lot.

Future-bass denpa is something that advances alongside a plague of similarly-sounding electronic music within doujin music. It's not that all music before it was good, but I think doujin music as a whole, and denpa in specific, ironically in 2019, has less variety than it had in 2009.

I think Camellia is hindering Nanahira. I liked both of them together for the original Shaking Pink(with Koko and Momobako), but these days, Camellia fits in the same electronic music genre that fails to impress - and it's not that his involvement with Konami is killing his talent. L.E.D. as a hardcore artist produced great denpa tracks for Beatmania games alongside Mayumi Morinaga(as Prim). It's just that they've reached a point of stagnation, at least when it comes to denpa.

IOSYS feature prolific and historic denpa vocalists in their albums, not only Toromi, Mosaic.wav and Momoi Haruko, but others, too. Nomiya Ayumi, Komiya Mao, Kikouden Misa with Loser Kashiwagi, Fujiwara Marina, Iwasugi Natsu and Yun were all guest artists for denpa arrangements, worthy of a reappearance in 2019. IOSYS will do well to stay in contact with them. I'll list some of their works in order:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90A2mqf_mk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmUonlMQUYk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt4QFi6xvQE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHJNd7LR7V8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gygmrz4tDE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIog0tyPRog

IOSYS has many other talented in-house vocalists. Unfortunately, they've grown older, and cannot remain the pioneers they once were. Many of them are married, some with children. Ono Marina, who was too a denpa vocalist, and spent most of her career as an eroge seiyuu, is set to quit at the end of this year. Yukimame gave birth to a healthy son not too long ago. Only few doujin superstars can partake in this hobby for so long. We must cherish what was and cannot be again. Not moe vocal arrangments in C54, not obscure flash videos shared in the early 2000's, not their popularization by NicoNico and Youtube in the mid-late 2000's - these periods and their respective denpa songs are behind us. I don't think VR will be the change to shift denpa anywhere good. We will have to wait for the 2020's.

I blame the lolis.
To be serious, I think at least part of this problem is the sheer volume of content that these artists release.
Just making this up here, but I'm pretty sure Choko has released about 9 albums in the past 3 years, Momobako surely over 25 by now, and Nanahira well over 50 including all the units she is involved in. I don't think either Mosaic.WAV or Toromi released quite that much, even over 15-20 years, so I think this makes the saturation seem worse.
>>20837901

There are still only so many denpa albums to come out each event, so it doesn't feel overwhelming by volume alone, but instead in a wider survey back. It's more about variety and innovation than it is about quantity. It's true, however, that Nanahira is a guest artists in many different albums, and it's getting harder to keep track of where she appears and where she doesn't.
Odenpa Studio, in my eyes, is not different from the likes of Choko and Nayuta, as listed above. I think their work is characterized by the same genre of moe denpa. In a previous thread I spoke of how I liked Ruriru's "Odenpa Oden wa Odenwa de", but I cannot say the same for the rest of their works. Do you have any recommendations for Inochi and Hamihami songs and albums? I haven't listened to anything by them.

That being said, I must say that the queen of nasal moe voice, Koko, did a pretty job with the compilation album "Yurupoka". I got it shortly after it came out. I included one photograph I actually posted in a denpa thread back in 2017. In it is "Yurupoka" and two of the albums I picked above. The bottom right one is several years older, but truly impressive. Denpa opening fit for a denpa anime.

But you cant deny that future perspectives are good. New artists can be possibly included or old ones have their collections expanded.

The growing popularity of spotify in Japan is something very good and I hope lesser-known artists realize.

Its already common knowledge that making your work available on streaming platforms doesnt slow down your sales, but rather increases as old fans will always be loyal and will buy your stuff and new fans will emerge.

Nowdays CD is collector's item after all.

Thank God this thread appeared yet again! I swear I checked /jp/ two days ago and it wasn't here... Anyway: you guys are my only hope left after I searched everywhere I could in the web.

Long story short, I'm looking for four specific things:
1) ちょっと病んでてかわいいCD (2018.04.29) from 妄想の旅団. (It's worth noting that I'm aware that here's a rip going around that is really low quality, but nobody wants that, right?)

And if anybody is wondering: yes, those are the only albums left for me to complete those two circles' discography up to now (in odenpa's case, I still lack their very first single, but I just gave up on finding that). For some reason, my denpa autism won't let me sleep at night because of that.

That'd be all. I'd be extremely grateful towards the person who'd post what I just requested. Long live denpa!

Check out Morinaga Tohko's "nagobest" album I mentioned earlier. The /jp/ uploaded version includes music as early as 1999 up until 2007. It is different from Under17 as most of the works are of the romantic variety. The first track, "Inu-chikku to Yobanaide", is originally from 1998, making it one of the oldest denpa songs.
Of the things uploaded by /jp/, there is also the series of albums by Project D, based on an old flash video which in itself was likely spawn from a Ragnarok Online meme from 2003.

What do you think were key works or shifts in that period? When I think of influences on doujin music, it seems to me that the key years were 2006-2009, rather than 2009-2012. I admit there are several significant doujin music circles today that originally emerged in that period, though.

20851383

Let's begin with "Fairway" from Eterna Musik(2001). The circle, led by Kotono, featured numerous guest artists. Arrangement wise, it was most often Neruge of circle Neruneruneruge to work alongside Kotono. Haruka Shimotsuki who went on to become famous as a vocalist and composer outside doujin also makes an early appearance in this album.

https://mega.nz/#!9cMAEYSQ!MKfNF_X4NXZjH1z6QfEL1svCR3BUrs-Eu4863uA8wpY

The music made up until 2000-2001 was still largely in this style - little quirkiness, and moe that appears through honest singing and themed lyrics. For example, the circles Hyper Beroove and Hyper Mirrorve, of deceased composer and arranger Mirawi, changed into Hyper Beroove Rebirth and Side Protea, shifting into much crazier denpa, as evident from Side Protea's "Pandasan Youchien". I'll be sure to send Mirawi's older work as well.

Honestly I tried to listen to Choko and Twinkle a while back since they kept getting mentioned every thread, but almost all the songs on their albums sounded very boring to me. Their voices, the lyrics, the composition, the themes, etc. I couldn't listen for very long because the songs were just so uninspired. Whenever I think of the new wave of moe denpa I think of them, Nanahira, mmbk (at least her voice is somewhat unique). I don't think it's their fault though. Whoever composes the majority of the denpa songs nowadays just sucks major ass and some artists tend to get sucky composers.

Funny but nowadays I think anime openings (used to be mostly only character songs that were denpa) and even rhythm games get even better denpa than the doujin scene. Commercial artists are doing something better than the doujin/indie ones for once.

I can see why you'd say that about Odenpa Studio but they have one thing that sets them apart. Extremely suggestive lyrics and themes. I haven't listened to them in a while but at least back when I did they had song about loli clits (specifically very visual lyrics about pulling back the labia to expose them... there is a double entendre here with peeling chestnuts), the one song about a loli peeing on her crush as a sign of love, and that one song about "mushrooms." I love some of their songs because they are frankly crazy as hell.

It's one of those things where the growth of moe denpa has brought a lot of denpa singers closer to chika idols than the denpa artists that defined the scene. I do believe that all the artists you mentioned have come our with interesting songs, but it is true that maintaining a pop factor is more significant to current artists than ever. I think songs for rhythm games come with a different context, as doujin releases are for the core fans of that particular singer's voice and style. I wish we did see more risk in the scene though.

>>20849372
I think you're right if I'm thinking about it more. 2009-2012 was more about the growth that otaku media and fandom saw as a result of landmarks that came before that period brought a lot of major circles into the fold.

2006-2009 Gave us Haruhi, Lucky Star and K-ON, shining a significant light on otaku media and culture and cementing moe's significance, Hatsune Miku and NND, so I have to agree that it's this period that birthed a powerful creative breeding ground.

On the topic of the formative years of otaku and doujin, this image came up in past /jp/ threads
I translated it to the best of my ability in hopes of better understanding what the Japanese otaku of modern times think of when they look back
-----------------
"Internet Pressure-free Education Generation" born in 1992-1995 theory
Year 0: Born alongside the spread of personal computers.
Elementary School Student - FLASH Golden Age: Various flash clips like "Chiba Shiba Saga", "Hage no Uta", "Koi no Maiyahi" had become a topic.
Middle School Student - Nico Nico Douga Golden Age: Overlapping period between middle school education and the period when Nico Nico Douga was interesting, Vocaloid and Nico Nico culture permeating into otaku.
High School Student - Anime Golden Age: K-ON! at the time exploded in popularity and became a social phenomenon. The precious time in high school was completely spent on anime.
University Student - Social Network Game Golden Age: Time when anbody who had a smartphone would be on social networks or playing social network games. A gaming culture unlike anything before was born.
Salaryman: Returning home late from work every day, watching nothing but mindless anime like "Kemono Friends".
-----------------

Moe was getting traction within otaku ever since the mid-late 90's, and broke through to the Japanese public with the airing of "Densha Otoko" in 2005. At the time, the concept of "moe" was already understood. 2006-2009 are important for having connected between people all across Japan who wanted to contribute to this growing fan culture. Communication through text, image and video was swift and allowed for remote contribution without participation in doujin conventions - for example vocaloid clips and utaite. We know how important Under17, MOSAIC.WAV and IOSYS were important for the popularization of denpa in the Internet age, but there is still this missing period from 1996-2002, of which few works are remembered and recorded.

Nico Nico Pedia lists denpa history ever since its beginning with bishoujo games in the early 90's, but unfortunately skips altogether the beginning of doujin music(and with it vocal doujin music - the precursor for doujin denpa). Besides the chronicling of collectors within websites like VGMDB and dojin-music.info, there is little information about denpa music at that stage to be found. Fortunately, webarchive crawled through the decrepit websites of doujin music circles, which contain information about the members and their works. The album booklets also contain information pertaining to the time, usually the experience of the people composing and recording the songs.

You're right! It really does set them apart. Eroticism was a recurring theme in denpa, but I haven't really seen it put into use in the past several years.

Morinaga Tohko singing "Inu Chikku to Yobanaide" in a live event in year 2000 or 2001.
Though the song was initially recorded in 1998 for circle Neruneruneruge's album "Ribbon", it received a full version only in 1999, and featured again in Eterna Musik's album "Fairway", which was linked earlier. The fifth track of "Approach", "Neko nandamon", was also sung live in that event.

https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm494638
This is another of her works, a vocal arrangement of Kanon's "Yuki no Shoujo". This video was uploaded during the heyday of NicoVideo. As evident by the comments, there are several viewers who view this 2000 song as "nostalgic", whereas there are others who had never even heard of a vocal Kanon arrangement.

Back at the time, being a fan meant you had to visit the circle's booths and purchase their goods. Few featured vocal song files on their websites for Japan to listen to. The distance between the creator and the fan was small, smaller than it is today, befitting an equally small doujin music fan community, excited to bring out a personal touch based on the tunes of their adolescence. So was the vocal doujin music community in the late 90's.

Artist wise, I think Mayumi Morinaga deserves a spot, with her impressive BEMANI entries of the past several years, especially those by L.E.D. of Konami.
With ARM, Komso and Jukucho(lyricist and guitarist of C&C):

If Side Protea is included, then its deceased founder Mirawi needs to receive credit for the work in his previous circles - vintage moe songs, and while we're at it, give a listen to his modern works as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B--2018rT8

What constitutes denpa in anime and manga? Is it otaku-type quirky, like in "Welcome to the NHK!"? What about eerie titles that are not of otaku nature, like "Cat Soup"? What about "Akihabara@Deep"? The light novel is not many steps far from the premise of "Chaos;HEAd", and the live action is, well, absolutely crazy.

>>20867272
When you get the chance, listen to the first two IOSYS albums, "armED chiLD"(ARM solo album) and "in the end of the age"(D.Watt solo album). These early works are perhaps the best representatives of what non-vocal, non-moe denpa music sounds like. They have their very own wacky charm, and are completely different from the ways ARM and D.Watt are known for - a thin line between video game music and intoxication.

To be honest, I feel like I'm too pushy with the separation agenda. I'd at least like to separate non-otaku denpa like Kinniku Shoujo Tai's "Reticle Za Mosou". Though it's definitely denpa, it was made before "denpa" was used in otaku context, and certainly before the word "moe" was even coined. Might as well add "Kimi ni Mune Kyun", which NicoDB lists as a precursor for denpa for its use of onomatopoeia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNi-GyGxWrw
It was even arranged for "Maria Holic" many years later, with a recognizably more denpa-ish sound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGRSDp__drQ

I think it's noteworthy that the kitschy, quirky side of denpa developed first outside doujin. It took time for doujin denpa to finally wear colors that made them similar, sometimes indistinguishable, from denpa produced by official bands and labels. But this is irrelevant for a simple list on an outdated website.

I think her performance in "Captain Murasa's Ass Anchor" is similar to "Casino Fire Kotomi-chan" in how she changes her voice. Regardless, she is wonderful both within denpa and outside it.

The real bomber from "Fantastic Picoration" is Roughsketch's remix of "Otasa Revolution". The Shaking Pink remix is also good. Both better than the originals, I'd say. "Fantastic Picoration" was actually the first album I ever bought. Perhaps a good starting point to denpa in general, since its content is so varied. It even includes a radio drama/comedy, IOSYS's other less known playing field(they've been doing them since 2000).

Extremetly interesting!

I appreciate the knowledge you're sharing here, I'm even curious to know how you know these obsucure informations that I believe even the majority apanese denpa/dj fans shouldnt know.

しかし!!!!! Hard to consider the album "Fairway" or this arragement of Kanon "denpa". I faithfully believe that the first band to make denpa music was, in fact, under17. The sum (musically cute + quirky lyrics) needs to be supplied, not just one. So, denpa songs first appeared with I've eroge compositions in the kotoko era and with UNDER17.

Probably the first songs CONSCIOUSLY composed under "denpa concept" was made by under17. The first ones accidentally composed... eroge compositions

The truth is that without eroge songs, there would be no denpa songs.

"Moe" and "quirkiness" are two attributes coming into play within the songs we listen to. The word "denpa" is often used as an umbrella term, but since it focuses on one attribute, it isn't accurate. The Japanese use "moe song" as well.

Chronologically, both attributes came at the same time. The Japanese think of the first "denpa" work to be a theme from the 1989 Famicon game Idol Hakkenden, one by the name of "Kimi wa Hoehoe Musume".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QS9YT2uCfc
Though it could not feature vocals, it did indeed have lyrics, and in their combination with the tune, the elements of moe and quirkiness could be shown.

From that point forward, the foundation of denpa music was set. With the development of technology, more complex sound could be included with games. For this reason, the starting point for vocal denpa is thought to be opening and ending songs of bishoujo games(galge and eroge). These often had optimistic, romantic themes, and were almost indiscernible from the composition of anime opening and ending songs. It should be noted that at the time, the term "moe" hasn't yet been coined(that would be attributed to BBS discussions from 1995-1996). For example, the OP of the 1994 game Tokimeki Memorial: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm204311
These were also the inspiration for the first vocal doujin music. This "conservative" approach to composition, and romantic theming, was a major feature of the first of vocal doujin music. I still can't tell exactly when and where it began, but it was common at the very least between 1998-2005. This is where "Approach" and "Fairway" fit.

By the late 90's and early 2000's, with the popularization of galge and eroge, and formation of Akihabara as otaku hub, the music for these games has shifted off its original course. Momoi Haruko and Masaya Koike, who worked together before the formation of Under17, were key to this change, along with groups like I've. They brought the flavors of quirkiness as used in "Kimi wa Hoehoe Musume", and the doujin music that lagged behind, with a rubber band like followed through, eliminating the traditional pure moe sound by the mid-2000's.

In 1999, a group of friends from Sapporo, Hokkaido joined together to form IOSYS. At first, they released original music, but quickly began recording radio dramas of comedic, nonsensical nature. The music accompanying these CDs, between 2000-2004, was a representation of raw quirkiness, without moe. With time, IOSYS too would be caught in the rubber band effect, and involve more and more female vocals - for example the new Fujisaki Karin, who would later be known as miko.
In past threads I used these two to portray the change:
https://youtu.be/fV0AqghsPC4
https://youtu.be/MugtO32F21A
Though today there are no more original compositions by them with the same sound, they still run radio dramas and shows. Their show "Nurupo", run by IOSYS president shatyou and producer Takuya, started in 2004 and has had more than 700 entries, as far as I can tell, since then. Though bishoujo games influenced their work, their quirkiness is a product of their own invention, as well as an effect of being pioneers in a rapidly expanding Japanese internet age.

The middle path of combining moe and quirkiness has been the norm for the past 15 years. I believe for this reason it is hard for the Western denpa fan community to think of moe songs as belonging to the same timeline. I think bands like Under17 and MOSAIC.WAV had "akihabara" in mind before anything else, and that the term "denpa" used to refer to the music only came into popular use several years later, the same way "moe song" was not in use until several years after the optimistic, romantic theming became commonplace in bishoujo game OST composition. I also think that without eroge, IOSYS would continue producing denpa, albeit of different style. With the full image in mind, the historical importance of Under17, I've and MOSAIC.WAV slightly diminishes. I will continue speaking of moe songs as part of denpa, even if they do not resemble what denpa fans today listen to.

I found out about this list the other day. It's interesting that a lot of their radio shows were included with the CDs in catalogue numbers. Some of them are not available digitally, like "Girl Game CD" number 1 and 2. Some of them were available for reprinting for a short while, like "High Quality", "Wave Ride", "20Khz", which might be still up for sale in small numbers in IOSYS SHOP. I don't know if "armED chiLD" and "in the end of the age" were available physically, but they're at least available digitally. There are less and less CDs from their early pre-touhou days available for purchase, even secondhand.

Here is another one from 2005 by Misaki Sakura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgLIviolYrQ

From the Toilet CD series:
"Picopico Super Toilet"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDedwWyXC7A
I have no idea what Takuya thought when he started the Toilet CD series, but the jacket of the first one is great. I wonder if there's any music in it. Fun fact: same vocalist as in "Kore wa Kimochi-ii Keine", and one of the three in "Make Us Your Brides".

I own a copy of "Girl Game CD 2". It features an even older denpa track which is more like "Maid-san Rock n' Roll" compared to Akiba-pop style denpa. With the other tracks in mind, it's a perfect combination of old IOSYS composition with vintage-moe singing and bad mastering that really throws me back in time. Might upload at a later time, if there's interest.

I ordered it from the IOSYS SHOP, I'll have to wait a while before it arrives to tell. I am always on the lookout for old IOSYS goods, and I can't say I ever saw it put for sale secondhand.
I linked the photograph for the second Toilet CD, which features its producer Takuya sitting on a chair in what I believe to be the IOSYS office building. If I had to guess from their previous and latter radio skits, these CDs are nothing if not bizarre. Though they all operated under the IOSYS name, several radio shows spawned over the years:
-Haitenai/Nullpo, the main radio show, hosted by Shachou and Takuya.
-Radio MOCUP and WBBC hosted by MOC
-Radio Arimax(AMX) hosted by Arima.Y
-HVC Famicom hosted by Hakase
Ultimately they were all involved with one another and often had other members appearing as guests. Many of their video recordings are available, thankfully, on their Youtube channel. They didn't want them to disappear and be forgotten about.

I thought to post some interesting past IOSYS collaborations among different members:
Hakase and Shachou as vocalists
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqRlpHlQlu4
ProjectYMG's first album - Guest Saeki Yuka with MOC and GIGYO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar8bMPylh5g
MOC with Isabel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__WGRMnW5jI

And to finish, ARM and Shachou dancing it off
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH_EEdeztQc

They were at the center of doujin culture for very long, and they've reached as far as they can within the range of their hobbies. They had a lot to do with the rapid popularization of Touhou in general and Touhou arrangements in particular, and both ARM, D.watt and Uno are working with Konami today. More important than anything, they've been having fun together for more than 20 years straight. It's an interesting question, how much they influenced other denpa artists. Have they done more for denpa than Mosaic.wav? Has their fame surpassed Under17? Food for thought.

Guy who originally uploaded なごべすと! here.

Amazing! I actually bought that album on a whim because I used to listen to Yuki no Shoujo a lot many years ago (probably around 2005, I was a huge KEY fan back then) so it's a very nostalgic and dear song to me and I wanted it in good quality, and I also thought that maybe other good songs would come in it. Not only the album ended up being amazing but when I watched the DVD that came with it I was surprised to know there was a huge history behind it. I'm really glad that it managed to pique your interest this greatly! You definitely have more motivation than me to find their older releases and I'm really thankful for your effort to find and share these gems. So many of these songs feel so dreamy and nostalgic and capture the 2000 feel so well.

I would really recommend them to other people as well, I think digging around the older otaku scene is key to understanding denpa and otaku culture in general, and it's also fun. I've also been trying to find and play older eroge recently as well and they all have this really nice, comfy aesthetic I've felt in love with. It's really cool. I've also accidentally stumbled upon many classic denpa songs as a result.

Thanks again, truly great contributions.

I'm glad that I've been able to contact you once more and thank you for how you changed me with なごべすと!.
When I first listened to the album, I felt ecstatic, as the sound was different than any doujin music I listened to before. I was pulled in by Yuki no Shoujo myself, trying to find more and more information about the album and frantically looking for a physical CD. Because I initially couldn't find it, I thought to look for the source CDs. At that time I truly became obsessed with traveling as far back as I could.

The world of older doujin music has opened me not only to otaku trends, but to the early Japanese Internet age - the transition period between public BBS and 2ch. At the time, people hosted their own personal websites, which were externally very simple, and often contained information about themselves, their works, and links to their friends' own webpages. Fortunately, webcrawlers kept the memory of many of them intact, including images and at times MIDI files - the same which were used in the creation of these old doujin songs. For example, the MIDI data for ねこなんだもんっ from Approach, or the data for DAUERND and LIMIT from ARM's very first armED chiLD.
Though it's only a small part of the doujin culture of the time, it shows how varied otaku were at the time, and the extent of quirkiness that can be reached in reality(versus in fiction like Akihabara@Deep). This side of otaku is deeply buried within history, so forgotten that even Japanese otaku don't keep track of it. Some of the decrepit websites still have logs of their released CDs, some even have artist profiles and chronological history. It's a goldmine of otaku culture left unexplored.

I'll continue sharing old doujin music, at least as long as it's on the same line as vintage moe vocal music.

Powerful vintage flavor. I liked the third track the most, but I'll have to listen again more in depth to decide what I think of the others. The track you noted surely carries a denpa flavor I'd attribute to the changing style of bishoujo game music(and particularly eroge).Thank you for uploading this. I knew ALcot from "My Girlfriend is the President", I didn't realize they started as a doujin circle. Must had been an "everything" circle, with teams for art(CG), music, software and PR. Do you perhaps own the physical album? I wonder if there is any extra data included within the CD(Mixed-media CD), or perhaps the booklet contain something interesting.

I wonder how many doujin circles eventually become publicly-traded companies, and of them, how long it takes them to do so.
IOSYS was actually planned to be one from the beginning: though it was conceived as early as February 1998, and had albums by its members sold at the time, it only became an official company in the 10th of October 1998(making 10.10 their anniversary). It takes considerable prior capital investment by circle members, and especially the willingness to invest long time at the cost of the traditional salaryman life. At the end, you have to remember that for a doujin circle to become a publicly-traded company is not necessarily to "make it big" - though ALcot made famous titles, there are surely many more who tried and failed.

IOSYS "Girl Game CD2"
https://mega.nz/#!Zdk2UAQA!jzHCL_9s0QBui5GUjqLGVhdhpbGjatK5KirocDtSOKQ

The arrangers ARM, D.wat, Arima.Y and 様4(様様様様) were all part of the original IOSYS team. Their old compositional style is still reflected in these tracks, both vocal and nonvocal. At that point in time, they were still amateurs in the field of vocal music - they couldn't be compared to veterans like Eterna Musik and APPLE Project. But that's part of the magic, isn't it? I especially like track 6.

>>20920852
On that note, I just noticed that Manack and Kotono participated in the first few albums. Was Manack perhaps the lead composer and arranger for the circle? Kotono is the founder and producer of Eterna Musik, and Manack made guest appearances in "Approach" and "Albatross", namely for "ちいさなぼくのうた" with Morinaga Tohko. I wonder if perhaps they made appearances in Neruge's albums as well.

I can see that OdiakeS, Kotono, Morinaga Tohko and Shimotsuki Haruka followed him back on Twitter, which tells me at least a little bit on his fame was retained over the years.

"Magic Palette - CARDCAPTOR SAKURA Original Image Album II" by Atelier Saffron (2000).
https://mega.nz/#!xd8hwCqT!GpqXCfO0LeD-E8JUjIvvS1hzaJ4z9UEA5Jhcv8G-2rI

Image songs exist to expand upon the personalities and atmospheres of characters. They may be loosely related to the character's backstory, or they might be completely original. A significant portion of vintage vocal doujin music was comprised of such songs, which were not arrangements, but made in the spirit of the media they sought to represent. In this case, it's the classic "Cardcaptor Sakura" anime.

>>20944389
Are you referring to bands such as Dempagumi.inc?
There were no "idols" in the early vocal doujin scene, as far as I can tell, but "idols" took on qualities of denpa in later years, particularly in Idolm@ster - a commercial representation of moe denpa, and to an extent, image songs by themselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vA74T0sh8s
Though they are not of doujin, I can feel a similar air from them. They were even covered by the doujin vocalists at the time.

>>20941555
It'd be hard to turn it into something as regular as the denpa thread. It's unfortunate, but there is no community dedicated to vintage doujin or denpa music that I know of. Makes me wish that a less transient medium was available.

There were image songs, such as in the anime of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki and The World God Only Knows, which were integrated naturally as character themes and ending themes. I don't know if this is still done in recent years. Have the new season of Cardcaptor Sakura any? Will the Fruits Basket remake have any?

I used this as an example in past threads, for its powerful "childhood friend" image writing. The same moe spirit as its predecessors from a decade back.

I like her too, I read her twitter sometimes and she seems nice and her singing makes me happy . . . that's really all I need. I understand some people here have higher standards. I just don't listen to composers that can't use her to her best effect; she's so prolific there will always be some good content.

What does denpa anime/manga mean? Are Gdgd Fairies and similar shows like Tesagure denpa? Hare Guu? Excel Saga? Majokko Tsukune Chan? Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? Teekyu? Ai-Mai-Mi? Koharu Biyori? Akikan's anime?
What common traits would anime under that category have?

>>20946337
>>20947032
Anime still have character/image songs, although I don't know if all character songs fall under whatever denpa truly is. Gdgd had them, I think Tesagure did although it at least had an image song about the show itself. Chuunibyou demo futomomo ga suki or whatever it was called had them. I liked the ones from Kyrouran Kazoku Nikki and Hanamaru Kindergarden.
I liked this one in particular. All the endings are worth watching and listening to the full versions. The show is pretty good too.

Denpa is a flexible term. Ever since the early 2000's it's been associated within otaku culture with otaku culture, and retained its old "lunatic" definition outside otaku. So when it comes to anime, otaku tropes definitely contribute to a denpa feeling, for example with Akikan's moe anthropomorphization.

When it comes to denpa music, image songs like in Chuunibyou are not close to the music most people listen to, but they are definitely a component of the anime and game industry, and as such I think they are under the larger denpa song umbrella term, as are game/anime idol songs.

I already wrote plenty about what I think was the development path if denpa, so I won't expand at this point. Just understand that many, maybe most people, won't be as liberal in what they consider to be denpa.

It was a bit hard to tell from the song because of how off-key she was, I don't think I've ever heard her sing like that before, but her speaking voice definitely sounds more familiar. I'm undoubtedly sure that 因幡羽美 is み〜こ, probably is her stage name before she moved out of the doujin scene. It's rather interesting to know that her and ARM, a couple of the two biggest driving forces in denpa, were working together back in 2002. The name 因幡羽美(Inaba Umi) is a pen-name for amateur vocalist and aspiring voice actor Usami Umi(Usa->rabbit->Inaba). She was active ever since late 1999. She was also a participating voice actor for several doujin eroge.
Her websites in migration order:
http://www2.to/umiusa/
http://blog.goo.ne.jp/umi_usa/
http://umiusa.easter.ne.jp/
Let's enter the latter one, the only one still up. In the profile section(だぁれ?) she lists out some information about herself.
"Name: Usami Umi
Residence: Tokyo
Birthdate and blood type: Springtime, B-type"
This information corresponds with Miiko's official bio from her personal website http://www.miko2.net
(Tokyo residence, born in mid-March, B-type blood).
Miiko's personal youtube channel, linked in the "LINKS" section, is of the display name "miiko usa".
There are pretty good indications that they are the same people: Tokyo-based female vocalists active in the early 2000's. MOSAIC.WAV was founded 2003-2004, around when Usami Umi stopped appearing as guest vocalist(but not as eroge voice actor - that continued for several years more). There is no further clue in the "Girl Game CD2" booklet. Besides these indications and the similar voice, it's up to you whether to correlate between the two or not.

This is as far as I'll go to protect Usami Umi's and Miiko's privacy.
In the previous denpa thread, we discussed the supposed history of vocalist Toromi, whom was told to be a past gravure idol before she started voice acting in eroge and singing within the doujin scene. Though this information is invaluable to the chronicling of doujin music in general and denpa music in particular, it comes at the cost of the privacy of our dear stars.

I hope you lot can be appeased with some more Miiko.

Earlier I came across an obituary written in Morinaga Tohko's personal blog back in 2014. It was about Mirawi's passing. As she tells, they've not simply been working together, they were actually a couple for ten years. Mirawi(real name Ishibashi Wataru) has gradually grown distant from Morinaga Tohko over his latter months, as his mental state rapidly deteriorated. Perhaps, to a certain extent, there was relief in his passing.

I was actually looking for more information on Usami Umi. I first got to learn of Usami Umi through her collaborations with Morinaga Tohko. For the other owner of the "なごべすと!" DVD, it's in the "piece of smile" album section. For those who have the "なごべすと!" album, there is a collaboration between the two in track 13. For those who downloaded the previously uploaded "Fairway", Usami Umi made a solo appearance in track 8.

It's interesting to learn how connected some of these artists were, and so distant at the same time. Though Morinaga Tohko is originally from Hokkaido, she has no relation with any IOSYS member as far as I can tell. Going by their personal accounts, many times these were intersecting friend circles, people who would only meet one another in the biannual Comiket. The world of doujin music was relatively meager, though with a sprawling early Internet community. Morinaga Tohko's own entries go as far back as 1999.

I don't know of any other couples, married or engaged, within the doujin scene. The closest I have are Ryu and Halka, who work together under Konami. Then again, it's very unlike the Japanese mentality to involve personal romantic relationships with the fan community. In Ishibashi Wataru's case, it was deserved as to clear a closed chapter. I did mot imagine such a saddening story.

>>20970128
I thought about it for a while and couldn't settle at an answer. This is because the classics are songs and not complete albums - I doubt any single album garnered that much fame before 2000, and even afterwards, it is still hard for me to label any specific album a "classic". People liked "Gura Gura", "Maid-san Rock n' Roll", "Icchae Popotan", "Gacha Gacha Cute Figu@Mate", "Oniichan doite! Soitsu korosenai" among others.
Search "電波ソング" in Nico Nico Douga and input "above 20 minute length" in search parameters, there are many denpa song compilations including the greatest hits of the 2000's. No promises for vintage moe songs, though.

Surprise because she's the new generation of denpa singers. She started as an utaite (and she was still in school) in the end of the last decade. Then she moved to denpa with ちぃむdmp, then solo singer and collabs and so on...

I really like her voice, good cute loli style.

it's not just her that we say goodbye, we also say goodbye to ちぃむdmp, pomme'tto, shaking pink, etc etc

My guess of that departure reason is personal issues. Momobako is young (born in1996) and maybe she has found a man or a very interesting job or is going to take a post graduate course... some shit like this.

It's the Japanese equivalent of an American who gets a tattoo of some kanji because they think it looks cool, and they think they vaguely understand the meaning. Not a bad song though anyways

What are you talking about? Are you implying that programming is a western thing? The lyrics writer is a programmer and the program literally works so they obviously fully understand the meaning. The fact that someone took the time to listen to it and write it down and run it is fun.

Honestly if she didn't want to be treated like an idol, with all the drama that it entails, the she shouldn't have acted like one. She started acting as a proper singer later but let's not forget she started by attention whoring on Nico live, shell definitely attract that kind of fanbase. Vtubers are not much better either.

>>20995008
Yeah, she used to make music live. I wonder when she learned to compose and use a DAW. She was doing well so I don't know why she stopped.

This, there are songs about sucking dick, others that make absolutely no sense and others that are fully composed of baby sounds on repeat and this is somehow a turn off? Didn't plan to insist about it but it's so weird to see that here.

it's all going to be rumors for now but I'm inclined to believe that she just found vtubing more fun, or got bored of the doujin scene.

It's not unheard of for vtubers to release songs however, so there is still hope.

She makes more money. The top vtubers with superchat make literally thousands every few minutes each stream. It's no wonder so many companies are jumping on it. As long as she stays independent I don't mind I guess.

Yeah and mmbk is smart, her channel has 100k+ subs and her live streams have a lot of donations.

You have to enter the boat in the beginning, because then the boat will be too heavy and sink. In other words, when the market becomes supersaturated, new vtubers will not be able to make much money anymore.

She likes money like we do.

Hello everybody. I hope you read my passage about doujin music history. For those who are interested, it is here:
>>20979430
Pastebin is not optimal, to say the least. I'll have to move it onto another medium sooner or later. Perhaps something like Denpa no Sekai?

Moving on, I have something else today - "junk.test 通" from 1995.
https://mega.nz/#!sJFRSIIJ!sobNRASLDqAOaWTCtt4RhLBNIt7LQO6GLyuflB5MRK8
The second in a series of albums by doujin circle mplayers RECORD, it brings a balanced share of vocal and instrumental music with impressive production value. The participants are a wide collection of early doujin musicians, as described in my passage of doujin history: a mix of musicians and video game enthusiasts who were all into computers and thus into online collaboration.
Some of them ultimately became video game composers, others faded away into oblivion.

I'd like to note the following:
Track 01, which received a Vocaloid adaptation by its own creator Masao Asakawa, as it seems, 17(!) years following its original release.
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16968378
Track 03: Eerie elements not unlike those of Kinniku Shoujo Tai's "Reticle za Mosou", essentially the denpa before otaku denpa. A song about a sleepless night of hide and seek games in the darkness, with a distant voice beckoning to the path of the dreams.

I'm sure the other tracks have stories of their own, and that they're in part recorded in the decrepit websites of their own makers. However, this is as much as I'll do for now. Please enjoy these historic sounds.
