This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, Japanese video games, and bangers.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Old guide for those afraid of change:
https://djtguide.neocities.org/

Remember: you DON'T WANT to give up learning Japanese.

I did Core: Exposure and then disabled all of the cloze sentence cards (which you can do by going to "Manage Note types" -> "Cards" and deleting the tab related to cloze).

But in retrospect I sorta wish I had done Core: Random, because you'll be able to recall the meaning of a word/grammar point by mere recognition of the sentence, or recognition of other words in the sentence. Hell you can recall the meaning of a point based on the shape of a sentence and how long/short it is. But the more you rely on external hints like that, the less likely you are to recognize the grammar point while reading.

So I force myself to only glance at the grammar point and pass/fail based on that. Then I read the sentence(s) afterwards to refresh myself on the usage.

Congrats on the language gains, genuinely, but even if you yourself managed to do it later in life, it doesn't mean that it's on the whole difficult for people at that stage. Idk the validity of the claim itself, especially considering it's a troll, but I'm just saying

>>20933711
There's really no trick, you just have to actively not do other shit and stick to your studying. that's probably not what you want to hear but there's really no other way around it. as you do it more and more and do it consistently your will power will increase, but that doesn't mean you can then be lax about it. I would say it's best to set x amount of time everyday for studying, like an hour or two - ideally 2 at the lowest - and do it at the beginning of your day, or as early in your day as you can. Once that's done you can do other shit, and if there's still time left in the day then do some more studying. Just be a neet, but with studying Japanese.

At least with the j to e and e to j dictionaries I've seen, they dont actually define the word, they just give you synonyms - which, as you may or may not know, often have 3 or more. J to j dictionaries actually define the words and all the instances of where a word is used. so not only do you get a better understanding of any given word (once you can understand the definition), but you can also explain the concept better (in your native language and Japanese).

So conversely, I dont see the point in not doing it (unless you dont care to have a full understanding of the words you're using).

The first part is fair, and I agree with you, but in the latter half you speak as if the monolingual transition is in conflict with the idea of fully transitioning when you can fully understand the j to j definitions; it's not. There's a process of easing into it while still being able to use a bilingual dictionary when needed, and then when you've reached the requisite level you can fully transition. I don't think we're necessarily at a crossroad.

>memory test
>with literally retarded pictures

This test doesn't mean shit. If you can speak, read, and write any language, you can learn Japanese.

The hardest part to learn Japanese are
>finding the right learning material
>investing enough time to learn Japanese

There is a simple rule
>do you know Japanese?
>yes
Then you can try questionable learning methods like AJATT or MIA.
>no
If you don't know Japanese, you need someone who tries to explain you the language as "good" as possible. In this case use textbooks which were written by real teacher (with teacher I mean every person who has a university degree and working experience in teaching the language). Also look at real reviews about those textbook. I would highly recommend to always pirate a textbook before buying it, because nothing is more frustrating than spending money on a bad textbook for learning Japanese. You have to love Japanese and every minor thing like buying bad textbooks can discourage you to learn the language. Especially in the beginning trying to stay motivated is the most important thing and a good textbook will always support you in staying motivated but also making progress. The only thing to look out for is to only use "adult college/university" textbooks. You want to learn the language as fast as possible. Don't waste time with elementary school stuff.

because that's shit for learning Japanese. it inevitably falls into reading practice, and on top of that it's in English, so you're not even getting better at reading Japanese. you hear the Japanese in the background which gives you the guise that you're understanding things, but if you were to take those subtitles away you would be mostly if not entirely lost (that is, assuming you don't have a lot of pure Japanese input).

Japanese people are required to learn English in high school, so they don't really need help getting off the ground like so many westerners starting to learn Japanese do. Thus, what they have is an English board on 2ch where you have to talk in English. If you want to start learning Japanese, you objectively will start off needing to learn a lot of meta information. I remember, years ago as a beginner, not understanding at all how Kanji worked. How many were there? How do they fit into sentences? Words? How are they used? Read? etc. A westerner learning Japanese needs to put in a lot of legwork just to learn how the language fundamentally works before they can start reading/listening (productively). Meanwhile, Japanese people already know all the shit about English, they just need to flesh out their vocabs and get more used to the grammar.

i was into learning japanese a while ago. i only know some hiragana, no katakana. the thing is, i don't know how to study. i know i have to know the kana but how do i do it?

if you're really hating it, just do what i did and start reading stuff you're attracted to and farming simple setences from that.

even better, anime with japanese and english subtitles, so you can more accurately pick words, or sentences that are on your grammar level, while not missing out on the storyline due to not being able to understand all of it yet.

Then find some kana learning app on the internet that keeps testing you until you drill them in. Shouldn't take more than a day or two.

i have another good tip for y'all. if you're at the level of japanese where you can understand words and sentences intuitively, then when you do your reviews, don't force yourself to recite (verbally OR mentally) the definition. instead, allow being able to "feel the meaning" to let you pass the card.

for example, if my new word is 亀頭 (sorry i just saw this word in the thread and it came to mind to use this example haha) and the sentence is

「亀頭を口に入れた。」

if i can read the sentence with correct readings and imagine the 亀頭 being inserted into the 口, i don't need to actively try to recite ”亀頭 means penis head" in my mind or out loud, nor do i have to check the definition. I can just consider the review passed once i've experienced that full comprehension in my mind's eye.

this will help you use anki to train a more intuitive "absorption/integration" of the language, rather than it being a hyper-conscious memorization game. it also takes way less time to get through reviews if you do it this way.

If you're talking to them face to face, on the phone, or some videocam thing, you're gonna be making a lot of mistakes, you'll be thinking of what you're gonna say next more than interpreting and dissecting what they said, you'll often not know how to properly respond; ultimately a waste of time. if you're texting on LINE or something it's better, but many of the same problems persist, and also there you're going to be spending a lot of time looking stuff up to say; you'd be better off watching animu or something.

for anyone on the fence about getting the mind illuminated or meditating in general, i just wanted to share my current experience with you all. anyone not interested, feel free to ignore.

i had a really great 30 minute meditation session this morning, after not sitting for a while — and all day so far i’ve felt fucking amazing. it’s a feeling that can accurately be described as an innocent, causeless, child-like joy, and clarity.

my senses feel sharp, colors are brighter and more beautiful. the usual aches and pains in my body feel much more faint and aren’t bothering me. i’ve been able to genuinely feel happy for others and wish them well from the bottom of my heart (even coworkers i usually don’t fuck with).

as for japanese, i literally could do 2 hours of anki right now without complaining. this morning i spent near an hour nonstop reading a pretty difficult book i started recently. things that are usually in my japanese study experience, that haven’t happened since i meditated this morning:

- impatience, wanting to hurry up and finish the page/reviews
- judging myself or getting frustrated for not knowing all the words on a page
- over-focusing on the “study” aspect rather than relaxing and letting myself enjoy the language
- ignoring the fact that i’ve gotten better

i will say i’ve been meditating on and off for a while, so it’s not like this will happen after one day or anything. but for anyone interested in cultivating these kinds of states, i highly recommend taking up a practice.

you don’t have to start super long! i’ve personally had only a handful of days when i’ve done more than an hour total. usually it’s 10 to 30 minutes a day, often skipping a day or two heh.

lately the results i’ve been seeing have been so great though, that i naturally feel like amping up to 1~2 hours total per day.

so don’t feel like you have to start off going super hard. master the basics with shorter sessions at least a few times a week, and once you start seeing results you’ll probably naturally feel like increasing it.

best wishes! :)

Well, it's not like I had many options. I was told to come with $3000 in savings, and the private doctors would have charged me $570 for a simple check up. Even without that added expense, I'm still coming up short by a couple hundred on the recommended amount, and I know moving into Japan is expensive given how much you gotta pay up front for a place.

Not only that, but I've never even gone to a private doctor, I've always relied on Social Security, but my bitch of a doctor didn't wanna do a routine check up simply cause I told her it was for a job, she said "that's not my duty" and essentially told me to fuck off and find a private doctor, only because it required her to sign a paper.
