What are /jp/'s thoughts on Welcome to the NHK? I just finished it and I know this isn't /a/ but I'd rather not discuss it there. You guys love Marimite too right, so I'll assume it's ok.

I turned hikki for a simple reason: I've worked graveyard shifts since I got out of college in '04. Instead of going to the office now, I just VPN from home. I stopped going to clubs and theaters and shit because people are too fucking noisy and PIG DISGUSTING. the grocery store is a block away, and I pay all my bills online. I only have to see the sun when my figures or computer components or random shit ordered on the internet arrives by fedex.

While I'm concerned that I haven't had pussy since I divorced my wife in '00, and my mother keeps mentioning that I'm thirty with no grandchildren for her to spoil, I'm at the same time reassured that I'll never have to deal with such a vehemently psychotic and histrionic bitch like that again.

straight out of high school (I'm assuming) or a little later, I'm assuming
you are one of those get-married-early couples that usually consist of an
ugly male and an ugly/fat/both female. Most people that aren't ugly don't
get married so quickly. Or you could have lived in a small town where
your chances of being ugly are higher because people that live in the

The "real deal" may have been more normal and high-achieving than you think. I have a hunch that a bunch of the people on /jp/ used to be high-performing students who lost interest in things once they got really into otakuism in whichever form. If the person was already a low-performing, antisocial student it really wouldn't matter or surprise people that he's NEET, and he can feel free to casually hang out with the other otaku with low grades at anime club or whatever, but if he was of high academic status he'd feel huge pressure to not let people know about what he's currently like, and can't stand to face former acquaintances, and thus is more likely to become a real hikkikomori.

Not only was the author a recovering hikkikomori, but years after writing writing Welcome to the NHK? he admitted in an interview that he was once again "reduced to a NEET, ... living as a parasite on the royalties from this book.

Being a Hikkikomori or shut-in doesn't really directly correlate with anything to do with otaku-ism, just that there's a great deal of overlap. There's already stuff like social/general anxiety disorders, agoraphobia, etc that leads to being a hikki, and I think Satou accurately portrayed signs of these.
