There's no point to it. It's not really gonna make you much better at reading Japanese, unless you're actually willing to wait a year before you read anything. It's like wearing a band aid on a small injury that's already healed.

You messed up by not dropping Core a long time ago.

Core was made under the (incorrect) assumption (by the internet's most famous dekinai) that vocabulary can be taught through flashcards, which (arguably with the exception of certain nouns) it can't.

Trying to memorize vocabulary from a frequency list doesn't work. You need to encounter these words in a meaningful context in order to create an anchor point for them in your brain and truly get an understanding of what they mean beyond what a simplistic Japanese->English "definition" can give you.

All the problems which exist with trying to memorize kanji by rote absent of any context exist for trying to memorize words by rote from pre-made decks. You might be able to force them into your short term memory like that, but in the long term your brain is just going to dump them all because it has no anchor points for the information (in the case of kanji, Japanese words to associate the characters with, and with vocabulary meaningful contexts to associate the words with).

>> No.21441762

ok but how u gonna read them without having srs'd them NIGGER fucker???????? srs words, focus on readings and vague ideas of meanings, then just fuckin read. especially with auxiliary verbs of which there are a FUCK ton and a million combos and usages you'll never understand just by SRS, everyone knows that. nobody SRS's to continue to SRS for SRS's sake, it's SRS so you can actually have some semblance of reading something. and SRS is a shit ton more efficient for that purpose than just reading by itsself, the efficiency rating of putting shit into your head compared to the time spent is wayyy higher than reading where the words you want or need to learn may not even show up for random intervals that you cannot possibly predict or hope to get reliable results from

conceptually ajatt is good but where it gets retarded is when ppl force themselves to be around japanese shit when their heart isnt in it and they are just bombarding themselves with noise effectively

Well, I was puzzling and puzzling over how I could emulate quizmaster-sama's learning method but with LNs. After all, I don't really know any nihongo, so I've gotta basically use "subbed LNs" as I like to call them. With that in mind, I decided the best way to do things would be to make an anki deck with sentences from Hyouka! Here's a prototype of the card, it's pretty much just like Matt, Yoga, and Quiz all recommend: sentence on the front, meaning on the back! what if the cards were like this
i've been experimenting and it feels like i can do 100 new cards a day in this format. and i've already seen 20 or so of the words in context again and i was able to remember their readings!

seems like it wouldnt work but putting the reading BIG like that, and the kanji small underneath, really makes a big difference, causing your mind to effortlessly associate the sound with those kanji. especially if you make yourself read the word twice before flipping it over, once looking at the kana and once looking at the kanji. effortless absorption, and then the meaning is all you need to recall.

that's not the point. the point is he attributes his progress largely to anime cards, when in reality he just might spend more time with the language than most regulars on djt. he probably is more disciplined. ajatt cultists who spend all day in the language are more disciplined too, but since when has anyone on djt praised them for that? who cares? and if only people who spend more time learning the language matter, then why would anyone praise him when we have other people like yoga on record bragging about spending hours per day in anki and reading and listening? thought it's possible quiz isn't more "disciplined". maybe he's just more interested in learning the language?
>giving advice you aren't qualified to be giving
what advice being given requires qualification and what exactly does that qualification look like? moreover what % of this thread is giving this advice? 1 or 2 people? looks to me like this is just a bunch of bullshit you're making up to justify bragging and shitting up the thread. what's funny is that apparently the majority of posters here haven't been learning for even 2 years and a plurality haven't been learning for a year. what an empty boast.

so why aren't you out there preaching? because it's "cringe"? get real. why do you think quizmaster posts about anime cards so much? because he knows they work. are they better than normal vocab cards? fuck no, that doesn't mean they're not better than what the typical retard is doing, struggling to memorize isolated kanji readings and skimming through textbook exercises. put things in perspective, the people on DJT who didn't get brought here by AJATT or koohii know a hell of a lot more about learning than anyone else trying to learn japanese, the fact that the AJATTers and MIAers out there are spewing bullshit is still a net positive over the overall state of how people understand language learning.
not to mention that based japanese eroge ben is one of the few ajatters who focuses entirely on input and emphasizes that the extra bullshit is probably unnecessary, unlike matt who spends all his time talking about the extra bullshit.

>posting random videos in Japanese taken from Youtube
If you set your account language to Japanese and follow some Japanese youtubers, as you should, you'll find all the random videos you need - not to mention that in Japanese communities, these videos will of course be posted naturally...
>seeing VN/LN recommendations being posted here.
You should trust DJT recommendations the least, most of them come from beginners who are just enthusiastic about reading anything in Japanese at all. In fact I remember that when I read a manga in Japanese for the first time, To Love Ru, I was so blown away by the improvement in writing quality that I thought the manga was legitimately good, though in truth it wasn't really. There's also the fact that DJTers read so slowly the intended experience is morphed horribly, it's not too hard to finish Baldr Sky in a week or two but Japanese beginners will make you think it's a multiple month long journey. A combination of shit comprehension + slow reading speed + inexperience in the mediums will lead to some pretty garbo ""recs"".

Really, your post is kind of indicative of someone who should get the hell out of dodge and leave DJT, since if you're here for the media then you're basically shooting yourself in the foot. A community focused on those topics would be much better. It's like eating a shit sandwich cause you like the bread. Nah, man, just go to a bakery.

men are only a few inches taller than women on average. men only differ in mean height by a bit. but look at the right side of the curve - very tall men vastly outnumber very tall women by ratios of 10 to 1 and more. slight differences in the mean leads to huge differences in the extremes.

this is why i don't give a fuck about women's personalities for the most part and all the interesting people i know personally, or the most interesting celebrities or intellectuals are all male IMO. but i think women are qt so it's OK.

If I had met my goal each month it would have been 276, so I missed it by a lot. I still don't understand very much, but probably more than I did a year ago.

Do you spend time editing them though?
Because Yomichan seems to import a bunch of junk into it and I doubt any automatic text capture can perfectly determine what amount of context you need.
And if you use multiple dictionaries you'll have to edit the definition field anyway right?
Doing anime cards is really minimum additional effort if you already do that.
And from personal experience (obviously I don't have any data on that), having the audio pays off. Think to really know shit having listened to it is pretty important and what I often do if I am unsure if I really know the meaning is I confirm by closing my eyes, uncovering the card and just listening to the context and understanding it, and then either failing or passing it. Pretty much bypassing the definition where I can.

I have no idea about yomichan but nazeka lets you use whatever text you happen to have selected when you mine the card as the context and it doesn't fill your notes with random junk.

>And if you use multiple dictionaries you'll have to edit the definition field anyway right?
Again, I don't know about yomichan, but nazeka just copies everything that it's displaying. You can manually delete stuff that you don't want, but you should be doing stuff like that during reviews anyway if you're doing automatic card creation, at least to fix or summarize bad dictionary entries. You won't do a good job editing when you're consuming compelling content anyway, your brain is somewhere else.

>And from personal experience (obviously I don't have any data on that), having the audio pays off.
I imagine it would be extremely helpful but there's nothing stopping you from selectively recording audio clips from VNs/audiobooks/anime using something similar to your method, and it would still be a normal vocab card. Helps a lot with highly specific nouns like names of food.

On that note, I hereby proclaim quizmaster's anime cards to be fakes; only anon's anime cards are the genuine article. Let it be known, though, that there's nothing wrong with being a fake, and being a fake might actually allow you to do things that the genuine article cannot. A vocab card pretending to be an anime card and calling itself an anime card might, in fact, be the most optimal 道, as long as it only exists as a way to trick people into realizing that sentence cards are dumb. I'm just shitposting, plain vocab cards with a normal sentence on the back are the best compromise between effort and utility.

大辞泉. Not only does it have the best definitions, but it also has the best format for use in a popup dictionary.

A lot of people like 大辞林, but I've seen someone observe before that the definitions in it are in some cases too specific and narrow to the point of making them incorrect, and that's something I would agree with based on my experience. The fact that it has a super shitty J-E dictionary tacked onto it is another minus.

There's also 新明解 which I generally dislike, but it's useful for gauging which reading of a particular word is the most common, accepted one since it's a lot less comprehensive than the other commonly used 国語辞典 out there.

Then there's 広辞苑 which is hit and miss, I'd say. It's apparently seen as the most authoritative dictionary in Japan, but while sometimes it will have a really well-worded definition, there are other times where it will be pretty crap compared to what you'd get from other options. Worth keeping around as a fall-back, but I don't use it as my first option.

Wait, you want physical versions? Why? The EPWING versions from the CoR are not only infinitely more convenient to use, they will also save you a small fortune. Japanese dictionaries are absurdly expensive, and even more so if you're paying extortionate shipping costs to import them.

Anyway, those were just my opinions. If you want to hear the opinion of someone who almost certainly knows much more what they're talking about than I do:
http://www.gally.net/translation/kokugo.htm

It would probably also be a good idea to try hunting down some reviews of them by actual Japanese people instead of バカ外人.

polygenic scores (tl;dr the higher the polygenic score the more genes someone has for IQ/general intelligence) indicate ancient greeks had increasing general intelligence until ~2000 B.C. before decreasing to today's levels. remarkable finding. polygenic scores can give us a new lens through which to view past civilizations. it's so fucking cool how quickly selection for intelligence can work in civilizations. caveats are that the change in intelligence isn't much, and more robust replications are needed.

most people assume that golden ages of civilizations are some purely cosmic cultural flow, but the missing nuance has been how genetic intelligence affects that cultural change and vice versa. hypothesis: polygenic scores for various civilizations at their golden ages will be higher. we will see similar increases and decreases for civilizations before and after their golden ages like persia and perhaps even western civilization today as dysgenics have set in since the industrial revolution. the future for archeogenetics is exciting as fuck.
