for listening it’s hard to track so just watch raw and get a feel for how much you can understand and enjoy. notice new words you’ve learned being used in the anime or show. get excited that you could pick them up. etc. you could vaguely log about that too if you wanted.

keeping a learning log is really motivating and good, i’m glad i started. also it keeps me well aware of all the immersion i’m getting

People who are well into the Core 2k/6k deck, how many cards do you have due per day? I am 2.5k cards in and have about 260+ daily on top of 20 new words. The 75 minutes or so it takes to do properly is infringing on my grammar/reading time. Have I messed up the settings or is it just a matter of getting better/faster?

I did my RTK flashcards again today and re-read Tae Kim. I think I learned a lot this time. My mom yelled at me for a bit about "wasting my life trying to read heiroglyphs." You messed up by not dropping Core a long time ago.

Core was made under the (incorrect) assumption (by the internet's most famous dekinai) that vocabulary can be taught through flashcards, which (arguably with the exception of certain nouns) it can't.

Trying to memorize vocabulary from a frequency list doesn't work. You need to encounter these words in a meaningful context in order to create an anchor point for them in your brain and truly get an understanding of what they mean beyond what a simplistic Japanese->English "definition" can give you.

All the problems which exist with trying to memorize kanji by rote absent of any context exist for trying to memorize words by rote from pre-made decks. You might be able to force them into your short term memory like that, but in the long term your brain is just going to dump them all because it has no anchor points for the information (in the case of kanji, Japanese words to associate the characters with, and with vocabulary meaningful contexts to associate the words with).

Finished Nioh today. If your interested in important samurai figures, spirits or old place names I'd defintely recommend playing it and making anime cards. Now since not everything is voiced but there's alot of text in mission descriptions I recommend 癒しのあいろん where he reads everything and just record that to make some. I know some of you don't like QM but he's defintely right on this one. Reviewing is super smooth and cards took me 20-40 seconds to make at first, but you get faster the more you make.

Well, I was puzzling and puzzling over how I could emulate quizmaster-sama's learning method but with LNs. After all, I don't really know any nihongo, so I've gotta basically use "subbed LNs" as I like to call them. With that in mind, I decided the best way to do things would be to make an anki deck with sentences from Hyouka! Here's a prototype of the card, it's pretty much just like Matt, Yoga, and Quiz all recommend: sentence on the front, meaning on the back! Thinking of calling my new method here "quiz cards" since Quizmaster inspired me. Thoughts?

what if the cards were like this
i've been experimenting and it feels like i can do 100 new cards a day in this format. and i've already seen 20 or so of the words in context again and i was able to remember their readings!

seems like it wouldnt work but putting the reading BIG like that, and the kanji small underneath, really makes a big difference, causing your mind to effortlessly associate the sound with those kanji. especially if you make yourself read the word twice before flipping it over, once looking at the kana and once looking at the kanji. effortless absorption, and then the meaning is all you need to recall.

I managed to reach my raw anime goals for this month after several months of basically doing nothing. It has now been 1 year since I started doing this and I've watched 200 hours. If I had met my goal each month it would have been 276, so I missed it by a lot. I still don't understand very much, but probably more than I did a year ago.

It would be nice if I could watch 2 raw episodes per day, and read 1 LN per month. Even half an LN would be good. I'll continue to keep you guys updated on my progress.

Doing anime cards is really minimum additional effort if you already do that.
And from personal experience (obviously I don't have any data on that), having the audio pays off. Think to really know shit having listened to it is pretty important and what I often do if I am unsure if I really know the meaning is I confirm by closing my eyes, uncovering the card and just listening to the context and understanding it, and then either failing or passing it. Pretty much bypassing the definition where I can.

I have no idea about yomichan but nazeka lets you use whatever text you happen to have selected when you mine the card as the context and it doesn't fill your notes with random junk.

Again, I don't know about yomichan, but nazeka just copies everything that it's displaying. You can manually delete stuff that you don't want, but you should be doing stuff like that during reviews anyway if you're doing automatic card creation, at least to fix or summarize bad dictionary entries. You won't do a good job editing when you're consuming compelling content anyway, your brain is somewhere else.

I imagine it would be extremely helpful but there's nothing stopping you from selectively recording audio clips from VNs/audiobooks/anime using something similar to your method, and it would still be a normal vocab card. 大辞泉. Not only does it have the best definitions, but it also has the best format for use in a popup dictionary.

A lot of people like 大辞林, but I've seen someone observe before that the definitions in it are in some cases too specific and narrow to the point of making them incorrect, and that's something I would agree with based on my experience. The fact that it has a super shitty J-E dictionary tacked onto it is another minus.

There's also 新明解 which I generally dislike, but it's useful for gauging which reading of a particular word is the most common, accepted one since it's a lot less comprehensive than the other commonly used 国語辞典 out there.

Then there's 広辞苑 which is hit and miss, I'd say. It's apparently seen as the most authoritative dictionary in Japan, but while sometimes it will have a really well-worded definition, there are other times where it will be pretty crap compared to what you'd get from other options. Worth keeping around as a fall-back, but I don't use it as my first option.
