5 you can start mining from books at over 5k if you really like books, 10k is more optimal though

fuck grammar rules, unless you get bored and want cheat sheets to your vidya. I say this because I now an instinctively hear fucked up things because of immersion. It for fact works BUT only if you understand what they are saying. So words and immersion, everything else is bullshit imo.

Then again, if you follow Jamal's good ol' 10k hours of watching subbed anime requirement, you could easily skip over to trying to read, instead of having to mine fuckloads of anime (since you'd probably already be used to hearing spoken Japanese).

I feel he left out some really crucial arguments here in that, if you're trying to speak another language by consciously using grammar rules and an internalised list of Japanese words with English translations,
>1) you're not going to be able to communicate with people because it's going to take you so long to think about what you want to say
>2) this isn't going to help you with on-the-spot comprehension of what you hear at all; you will have to stop and think and break down any sentence you hear in order to attempt to understand it (which most of the time you will fail to do because you don't actually understand the language)
>3) there are lots of Japanese words which all translate to the same thing in English but actually mean different things in Japanese and can't be used interchangeably

Overall, okay video with a good intention behind it, but without mentioning the above things I don't think it's as hard hitting as it needs to be to sway those indoctrinated by the classroom/textbook model of language learning.

The thing is, I never had a tablet so I don't really know whether having one is worth it. I'm worried it will just end up lying somewhere. That's why I am asking for some personal experience of people who own one.

what makes sense:
1. read whatever you want
2. look up anything new that isn’t obvious from context
3. if a word has kanji you know and the word’s 意味 makes sense given the kanji, don’t anki it. chances are you will remember it naturally within a few lookups
4. if a word has kanji you aren’t very familiar with or the meaning and kanji don’t resonate like you’d expect, AND you know you’ve seen it before multiple times, add it to anki, preferably with j def.
6. don’t add words that are brand new. look them up and move on.
7. only add sentences to anki if the word (or grammar) is something you’ve seen multiple times but can’t remember and needs context to hammer down.

make your anki use as efficient as possible. you can cut down anki time by 70% or more if you stop loading it with things you don’t need and focus on what makes sense to add. and don’t look up things that are obvious.

What is the deal with RTK in this community? Why is everybody in such a hurry to "learn" kanji? I'm a student of Chinese learning Japanese on the side, so the mere thought of kanji doesn't cause me to break out in cold sweat like it does some people in this community. I'm not mocking, I absolutely sympathize with being intimidated by Chinese characters, and I think it is easier to learn Chinese characters in the context of Chinese itself, so perhaps I have no right to judge, but from what I have gathered about RTK by reading posts here, I must say that I am firmly against the idea on a fundamental level. First of all, Chinese characters are tough, everybody agrees on that point. It's a lot of information for the uninitiated to process and as you are learning them you will definitely go through a phase where you fail to distinguish between nuances and you will forget the meaning, the pronunciation and spelling of characters. It comes with time, and it is absolutely normal for any difficult skill to take a while to master. However, by using RTK you are left with irrelevant mnemonics which I think can only serve to slow you down on your journey to being able to deal with kanji comfortably (though I have no proof to back that statement up). Furthermore, by relying on English translations instead of learning how these characters are used in context you are not actually learning the meanings of the kanji. If anything, you are just learning how to write English using Chinese characters. Also, some of the translations I have seen are not accurate at all or are at best half-true (I guess the majority are decent).

The attitude of wanting to "frontload" kanji and be able to read them before starting to learn Japanese has always struck me as very weird. For example, what possible reason could one have to learn a kanji like 税 until one is at a level where one can discuss tax-related matters or understood native material which talks about taxes? There is no point knowing how to write it or being able to recognize it on sight if it is far beyond the scope of one's abilities. To me, speaking from the perspective of a Chinese learner, one doesn't truly know the meaning of a character unless one understands the context it is used in and what types of connotations it has. Characters themselves on their own are essentially meaningless without reference to this web of semantic connections. Therefore I think you can only, or at least should only be able to write as much as you know. What's the rush? Can't you just take it easy and learn the character's meaning and spelling organically over time? The characters really aren't that scary, it gets easier the more you know.

>I-Min Lee, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard University T. H. Chan School of Public Health and the lead author of a new study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, began looking into the step rule because she was curious about where it came from. “It turns out the original basis for this 10,000-step guideline was really a marketing strategy,” she explains. “In 1965, a Japanese company was selling pedometers, and they gave it a name that, in Japanese, means ‘the 10,000-step meter.’”

>Based on conversations she’s had with Japanese researchers, Lee believes that name was chosen for the product because the character for “10,000” looks sort of like a man walking. As far as she knows, the actual health merits of that number have never been validated by research.

what i do now instead of anki. read whatever, manually adding words to a dictionary app on my cellphone with the date and title of what i read. a few hours after adding each set of words, quizzing myself on them within the app. and then i'm done.

i don't review that same list again after that day. i just keep reading, adding, reviewing once after some hours have passed, moving on.

i figure that that one review hours later is enough to keep those words in my memory twice as strong as they would be if i only looked them up and moved on. but it encourages me to read more to keep encountering words/filling my collection with words, and doesn't require as much time investment as anki takes. i think this is the magic recipe for me. perfect balance between just reading, and promoting memorization with reviews. not to mention the app makes creating word lists pretty quick. attached a picture of how the app looks.

Is there a good rule/intuition for remembering when verbs will conjugate using the -i form vs. the ーて form for some of the more common suffixes? I always think of the -te form as being a bit like "and"/for chaining verbs together (e.g. てくる or てみる), but for adjectives I've noticed I've gotten tripped up by ほしい which is an adjective - so I'd figure it would be slapped on the back of the -i form like "しやすい " but instead it goes on the back of the -te form "してほしい”.

Any suggestions or should I just memorize this and not ask stupid questions?

Here's a few entries from my language learning diary that I'd been keeping a few months ago:
Day 1
I learnt hiragana by copying every single one down 20 times. I also read a chapter off Tae Kim's grammar guide. I hope I'm able to read Japanese in a few years.
Day 5
I signed up for Japanese classes at university. They said we were gonna start next Saturday. Also, I read a doujinshi featuring Akatsuki from Kancolle, and pretty much understood much of what was going on. H-manga are no less embarassing to read in Japanese, it seems.
Day 12
I went to Japanese class for the first time. It seems like it's gonna take a while to cover hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Also, most of the basics were covered quite slowly. I'm suprised that nobody else knew phrases like "よろしくおねがいします" or "はじまりましょう". When I got home, I read chapter 1 of Yotsubato without having to consult a dictionary at all, which I feel a bit proud of.
Day 46
Should I keep on learning Japanese, German, or French?
French is quite similar to Spanish and English, which is why I'll have no problem with it. In addition, it'd be useful to speak one of the world's most important languages.
German is somewhat similar to English, and has lots of philosophy and poetry written in it.
On the other hand, Japanese has anime, light novels, and eroge. There is nothing more liberating for the soul than admiring beautiful little creatures, especially as represented in SOL anime. よかったらむらのおじさんになればきれいしょうじょとあそんでる。
Day 56
I started watching Manabi Straight. I noticed I could understand many words, but many others still remained kind of in the dark. I wonder if real-life Japanese is really that different from anime Japanese. Also, I wonder if Japanese kids actually speak like Yotsuba.
Day 71

Nuke (who paid to have those decks made, Matt added in formatting so that they would be compliant with MIA) should have put in BOTH male and female voices, so you could either have both or choose one or the other. Japanese males and females do not remotely speak the same way at all.

Use bopomofo or gwoyeu instead.

Uh, are you sure about that?

From the book's description on Am*zon:
>Downloadable audio files for vocabulary and example sentences. Features male and female narrators reading vocabulary and example sentences in order, so anyone to easily listen and repeat along.

That's the stated purpose of the page, but the inclusion of bits like:
>That strong attitude won over a lot of people, but simultaneously lead to me being demonized by many others.
>I seem to have earned a reputation for “regularly changing my mind”
etc. make it seem like he's also trying to address criticism about him from places like here.

Also, this paragraph touches on a pretty valid criticism of him that I actually don't see often:
>The criticism, “don’t recommend things that you didn’t personally do” is extremely limiting, as surely the exact way that I went about learning Japanese is far from what is the most optimal. My goal is to create the best method possible, and that means experimentation. If you vote against experimentation, you are voting for stagnation. On the other hand, if I am recommending something that I didn’t personally do myself, I am doing so because the model of language acquisition that I have built up through years of engaging with the process says that it should work. It’s different than someone with no experience making up stuff that sounds nice. That is what I have always cautioned people to avoid. When I am not confident that something will work, I give a disclaimer that the idea is still experiemental, and you should only try it at your own risk.

His defence of himself here isn't very good either. He tries to wave away the blatant contradiction/hypocrisy in the advice he gives* by claiming he was saying not to listen to people with "no experience making up stuff that sounds nice", but the people he publicly called out and shamed on his channel in reference to this advice didn't have "no experience" - they were actually even able to output to some degree, they just weren't as good as him.

* "You shouldn't listen to people who aren't fluent. They don't know that what they're doing works because they haven't used it to achieve fluency."
contrasted with
"Hey guys, I never did this, but you guys should go do this. Trust me, I'm fluent."

So what's Matt's reasoning for doing RTK like a year after starting? I can't think of anything beyond
>you troglodytes are literally too stupid to do anything without a loot box dopamine rush every five minutes, and if you quit I don't get patreon bux so just do it this way I guess.

depends on how you define translating
if you consider "using as many words of l2 as you want to describe the nuances of an l1 word" then sure
but if you claim, "every word in l1 has a word in l2 that is a perfect equivalent" then that's absolutely not true
in practice, the second scenario is often required to make readable translations and if it's not the case for that particular phrase or word you're working on you're often fucked and have to make choices about which nuances of the l1 word to emphasize with your l2 word
that's why different translations of the same ancient greek or latin texts can often differ significantly, for instance

While this is strictly true, if you never speak or output at all you will never learn to speak and output well. That's partly due to the fact that speaking is an activity that entails a lot more than just language knowledge. So while input should be the core of your study, if you care whatsoever about doing things other than inputting you won't get around practicing those activities as well.
