having taking and passed n1 myself a couple of years ago my opinion is it's not really that hard at all and it's possible to pass it while being pretty garbage at japanese (as i was when i did). the problem is most people who take it are just decoding the passages because they've grinded vocab and grammar through books but never actually done much proper reading. realistically you do need to be alright at that at least, since the questions are not exactly easy and the passages are indeed just native materials lifted from books on various subjects. there's practice test material online (not on the jlpt site) that gives you an idea of what it's like if you're really curious though.

It's not really crippling it if I just hit again if I can't remember how to read it, even if I know its definition, isn't it? Like I know 月曜日 means monday, but if I can't remember that it's read as 'getsuyoubi' then I just smash that 'again' until I remember it along with the rest of the days (besides friday, because friday is $$$day). Besides, I find all kana words to be significantly worse exactly because I CAN pronounce them, but do not remember their meanings at all. This is completely out of my ass, but I think the average Japanese learner (or person who has learned) is above average. I imagine the typical dekinai who gets attracted and quits is going to be below average IQ, and the average person who has learned any foreign language as an adult will skew towards above average. Japanese in particular requires a ton of work and some degree of learning optimization to actually get good, so combined with the dekinai filter there's likely an appreciable, but small, increase.
