I want to get into the series. The last barrier of entry, which I am now investigating, is: is it free? I don't want to pirate shit on my laptop, but it seems too good to be true that this huge series would be freeware.

Well, for that last part, you've been really cool to me but my relation to Japan is of the self-hating variety. I show my interest in Japanese culture as little as possible around the majority and I always put a very moderate and balanced face to it. Short story long, I wouldn't fit in, I think. Touhou games are too scarce to get legally. A few hardcore fans will seek them out on some obscure Japanese online store or whatever, but that is far too much for ordinary people.

Maybe ZUN should innovate here, because even though I'm sure a lot of the illegal copies are clean, it's still a risk.

Then again, I don't think he's in it for the profit. He does it for fun.
