you put a sentence on the front like パンを食べる and read it trying to understand the whole sentence meaning. on the back it will have パン - bread or whatever word you learned at the time of the card. i think these cards are good for beginners but they eventually got boring to me and i just do kanji -> reading cards now personally but i did do sentences for a while and believe they are effective

As I understand it they're extremely common building blocks for a good chunk of kanji, and they can help you distinguish more easily between similar looking kanji because you're more familiar with the etymology of it. Sorta like lexemes, with kanji acting as the grammemes and morphemes

I'm from New York and I would deem it one phrase, accepting that it can be deemed two words. However, that's a bad example because "York" is not clearly a word the way "New" is a word.

look it's all anecdotal evidence, but I can tell you my experience with it. Normally I don't have much interest in women. I only had a gf once, when I was twelve. I use Tango and core2/6/10k premade decks and just changed the css to my needs. I experimented a little with different setups, but for me complete blank front works best. Even putting hiragana there can distract a little from pure listening skills. It might help with the correct pronunciation, if you can't understand clearly. I would also recommend to use the sample sentences as well, and fail the card if you completely fail the sentence. I would argue that this helps immensely with understanding. But of course does absolutely nothing for reading. Might be a good addition for people who are already pretty good with reading, but bad with listening or for people like me, who don't care about reading at all.

If you have trouble telling kanji apart, you can use radicals to identify them RTK or KKLC-style.

I'm fine listening to the スーツ guy and some Physics-related Youtubers because I know what kind of words or expressions they usually use, but I still feel like most comedians talk too fast. Rakugo performers often use lots of old time-y sounding words that I often can't catch onto. Politicians and news announcers are usually very clear and somewhat slow, but they use plenty of politics/business-related words I've rarely come across in anime or eroge.

Remember that as a JET you're not a teacher, you're an entertainer pretending to be a teacher. There's a reason people call us "dancing monkeys." If you can play guitar, sing, or somehow incorporate your English into a fun activity then you'll make your odds a lot better.

As people leave JET they usually take one of three routes:

3. Go home. Usually the smart move.

There are rare exceptions where JETs truly took this as a professional opportunity and made connections, eventually becoming true teachers. Some went on to study at Japanese universities.

Just remember that unless you get into some international megacorp then you'll be with a Japanese company that probably only does domestic business. Meaning, you'll need absolute native level Japanese skill and a self sponsored Visa because fucking nobody sponsors Visas nowadays, especially if you have no prior work experience in Japan.
There is something called the Highly Skilled Foreign Professional Visa which uses a point system to grant you a visa. If you're trying to get in with computer science you would fall under the Advanced Specialized / Technical Activities and you need to score 70 points.

They are supposed to provide simplicity and clarity in immigration and be adjustable to the specific needs of the country at the time. But they are rarely adjusted anywhere near as much as necessary and reduce immigration to whether or not a candidate meets an arbitrary sit of criteria. This bureaucratizes the system further and results in people having to game the system and punishes applications or occupations which do not mesh well with the criteria needed to gain points. So you end up with an oversimplified system that doesn't work well, or you have to make exceptions and create layer after layer of more complex visas which end up defeating the purpose of why you implemented the points system in the first place. As far as I know both Canada and Australia still have their systems but have both taken steps towards letting more people in that do not strictly pass their points based criteria.
Or to try sum it up in a single line, reducing the immigration needs of a large and complex economy to one or two tables on a single page is not viable and it is a fool's errand to even try.
