The lack of blacks and jevvs on the Touhouverse subtly hints an parallel timeline where the axis powers won World War II and finished their ethnic cleansing, seeking an escape from this new world many scientists and businessmen join the "Dollhouse" project where they would enter a simulated reality free from modern hazards to live a simple life.

Many iterations after and thousand of minds lost in the sea of prototypes the project came to fruition, far from perfect due to the limits of computing power in the current silicon technology this fake paradise still holds enough wonder and grief to keep entertained the minds of those who submit to its 17 year old overseer.

Someone please explain why there are humans in the beast realm. If the yama sentenced a human to the beast realm for their sins, I thought they'd be reincarnated as a beast or something, not just sent to the zoo. Am I grossly misunderstanding how these afterlives work? Or is ZUN having a giggle because humans are technically animals, it does sound like the humans are lumped in with other primates down there.

Ah, right. Allow me to answer this. In Touhou, the afterlife is based on Buddhism. This is due to Japan receiving a lot of influence from China back in the day. But moving on to explaining the 'animal realm.'

When you die, you can essentially be sent to one of 6 realms depending on how much of a shithead you were. The bottom is Hell, of which there are multiple. Next is the Preta realm. You might recognize Preta from SMT. You may also recognize the name from some of Youmu's spellcards in Touhou 7! After this is the animal realm, where the game takes place.

Then, it is the Asura realm. After that is the Human realm, which is basic reincarnation.Then, finally, Deva realm, which is essentially heaven.

Reincarnation from hell happens once all of a sinner's bad karma has been burned away. This is known as Samsara, the eternal cycle of reincarnation. (Yet another thing you might recognize from SMT.) I should also note that even those of the Deva realm are not immune to Samsara. Also, the whole point of Buddhism is to break this cycle and reach nothingness.

As for why ZUN decided on the animal realm? The whole controversy regarding Kemono Friends season 2 got him thinking about animals. That's literally it.

Glad to help, even though looking back I think I may have misinterpreted your question a bit.

The 'Animal Realm' is something that the Human Realm can actually interact with in traditional Buddhism. Basically, literal animals in the real world. People -are- reincarnated into animals. However, based on what I've seen about the newest game, ZUN has the 'animal realm' as an entirely separate place. (I haven't actually gone through the game yet, just explaining the animal realm from my knowledge of buddhism, so correct me if I'm wrong.)

This would technically fall in line with how Touhou works, with supernatural and religious things falling out of common sense and into myth. Essentially, because Samsara has fallen out of the real world's perception of reality, the realms likewise have entered the world of imagination alongside Gensokyo, Makai, etc. This is just my interpretation and speculation from what I do know about the plot, of course. I could be totally wrong.

>How powerful is Reimu actually?
Varies heavily depending on her level of focus and how seriously she's taking things. She's way weaker when she's fighting for money or fame or something. When she's motivated and her mind is completely clear she's a nightmare.

Yorihime is basically Workaholic Space-God Reimu. Not only does that mean she's really strong, it means that Reimu kinda empathises with her and feels guilty about causing her trouble for no reason.

You know those martial arts where you never actually hit your opponent that hard, but can make them hurt themselves by slightly redirecting their blows as they try to attack you? "The storm will shatter the sturdy oak but not the flexible willow"?

Reimu has an uncanny ability to "go with the flow", naturally reaching her endgoal through the path of least resistance. Taoists call this "wei wu wei" - action through inaction. She's actually less effective when she's thinking about what she's doing, because then she's straying from this path.

In Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Marisa gets annoyed at Reimu for dodging all her bullets. Reimu genuinely doesn't understand what Marisa is saying, insisting that she stood still and Marisa's bullets curved around her.

In Eastern and Little Nature Deity, the fairies use an illusion to trick Reimu into walking into a river. She doesn't notice the illusion... and as a result she walks across the river as if it were dry land, because fish rise up under her feet to support her.

Grimoire of Marisa suggests that when Reimu "teleports" a few feet, from her perspective she was moving normally and only travelled an inch to get there.

It's also come up a few times that Reimu is capable of unravelling barriers as if they're not there, including ones that are beyond Marisa's and Patchouli's abilities to destroy.

So, this actually has to do with her 'Ability to Float.' 'Floating' in this case, many people would associate with simply the ability to fly. And I believe for a while, this was how her 'Ability' was translated. 'The ability to fly.' However, 'floating' has a few different implications. It allows her to physically float, but also to metaphorically float through life. The example of the bullets curving around her is a good example of this. Another would be an instance in the fairy manga where they try to trick Reimu into walking into a pond. Yet, not even known to her, a bridge of carp would form at her feet and allow her to cross without ever knowing she was in danger of falling. Much to the surprise of the fairies of course.

ZUN described it as cheating, she invokes gods and her powers IS the power of the god she invokes, like if she invokes amaterasu she becomes as strong as amaterasu, she can uses her 100%. because of that she has almost no ceiling to how strong she can be.

That is, Yukari knows that if she picks a fight with the Watatsukis she'll lose. Oeiginally, Kemono Friends was envisioned as a multimedia franchise: a mobage, a manga, and an accompanying anime. The anime was the last of the three to release, having come out after the manga ended and when the mobage bad just been shut down. It was a surprise hit and a rapidly growing phenomenon in Japan. For the whole year it aired, KF was perhaps all Japan cared about. The creator of the anime was Yaoyorozu, a tiny studio with no renown. KF's success had rocketed their popularity, but on 9/25 the director was fired for unknown reasons. This event caused massive backlash and caused Yoshizaki Mine, the creator of the series, to go radio silent. Eventually, Yaoyorozu was replaced by a new studio, called Tomason, and a sequel anime was spearheaded by another company, Age Global Network. This new studio also had little renown, but unlike Yaoyorozu, had literally no experience with 3D animation. With many production problems, Mine taking a direct control over the story with little input from the director, and a myriad of other things, KF2 managed to air at the same time as Yaoyorozu's new show, Kemurikusa. It becomes apparent by the end of the season how much of a grudge upper management and Mine held against Yaoyorozu, as many story retcons, overall poor execution of story plotlines, and how beloved characters get treated even on a metacontextual narrative get treated to absolutely shitty fates. It reached a point where KF2's last episode managed to become the lowest rated episode of all time on NND. I could be more specific on why it's bad, but you'd really need to see and compare the original KF anime to KF2, which most people don't even take as canon anymore due to how it shits over everything that comes before it to beat off over how great Mine's ugly as fuck self-insert is and how Kaban is a dumb loser who killed her best friend and is slowly dying and can do nothing but watch a reincarnation of her bestie NTR her and be forced to smile the whole time. Also AGN staff has literal links to Yakuza, insults fans, and are generally shit people who need to get Kyoani'd.

To be more specific, the producer Hosoya was being a horribly spiteful shit on Twitter, posting a death memorial to Tatsuki, generally being rude to fans, etc. The same applies to the director of KF2, I forget his name. He'd ban anyone who said KF2 was bad from his Twitter account, came off as gloating in interviews and some other shit. Really, the main controversy concerning KF2 was how it shit on everything that came before it and how awful it was in terms of production despite the larger budget and how everyone involved seemed to be shit people. Essentially, the entire situation regarding KF is akin to finding a goose that lays golden eggs, killing the goose because you wanted more eggs more quickly, replacing the goose with a gosling and then forcing the gosling to lay eggs despite it not being able to, only to accidentally cause the gosling to shit its entire skeleton out of its body, then blaming the original goose for causing all your problems while smashing the golden eggs it laid for you because you really hate that fucking golden egg-laying goose for making better eggs than you.

At the very least, KF seems to be on its last leg, Mine's been relegated back to doing only character designs, and Sega seems like it wants to do KF justice. The entire situation is incredibly bizarre. I'd totally recommend checking the anime out though, if you like cute kemonomimi, quality worldbuilding through visuals and subtle hints, and thick 3DCG asses and thighs.

On the other hand though, bullet hell isn't a battle of strength. Spell cards are a battle of who can be the most beautiful and dodging is one means of winning. Have you ever triad playing the game without shooting? Each spell card has a timer that, even without shooting back, will end and you can win just by not losing. This concept is what keeps Gensokyo from being a strong prey on the weak society as, theoretically, it allows the weak to play evenly against the stronger yokai. Reimu having infinite dodge almost guarantees her victory against pretty much everyone in terms of spell card battling. She's practically the Saitama of Touhou.

Well no, it's because of the rules that Reimu can't use her power to win, that would be cheating. Marisa explicitly gave her natural ability a name and time limit in order to have it be legitimate in the rules. Also only Gensokyo has to abide by the rules. In games and works where they don't fight in Gensokyo, it's implied that they request to use spell card rules, or as the case is in SSiB they explicitly ask, but in theory spell cards are never necessary to enforce when not in Gensokyo. It bothers me how people think that Yuyuko's gluttony is only a product of IN. Yuyuko is a glutton, and this is no secondary meme. I want this post to bring together all the instances of her being interested in or obsessed with food.

>PCB, 2003
That's right, in her very first appearance, so long as you get a 1CC with Reimu A you can see Yuyuko chomping down on a large spread of food like the fatass she is. She is also eating in Sakuya B, and in Marisa B she is holding a feast though I don't really count that, it's more of a flower-viewing party.
>IaMP, 2004
Yuyuko won't shut up about tea. Admittedly, this is mostly a heavy-handed metaphor.
>IN, 2004
Yuyuko compares nearly every boss to food and wants to eat them.
>BAiJR, 2005
Yuyuko's article has her bringing up the food they're eating and needling Aya about the manjuu she isn't eating, asking about it in that way that one employs when they are "politely" trying to say "hey if you aren't going to eat that, I will".
>PoFV, 2005
In Youmu's ending, Yuyuko explains that Eiki asked for Yuyuko to teach Youmu more. Unsure of what she should do, Yuyuko decides that lesson 1 will be learning how to pour some delicious tea.
>Seasonal Dream Vision, 2005
Yuyuko mentions how she can't remember yesterday's breakfast, but more importantly she stole sakuramochi she found from a cupboard for her meeting with Yukari. She mourns how she forgot to bring tea.
>SSiB, 2007
Yuyuko is impatient with how long the moon-viewing dango is taking to prepare. When going to Remilia's party, she explains to Sakuya that she decided to go there and not to the shrine because the party had food. At the party, she EATS (a lot, and is the only one shown to be eating, though Cirno at least *has* food).
>SWR, 2008
Yuyuko's first thought upon seeing Iku (an oarfish) is to remember that oarfish are usually grilled plain or with onions sauce. In versus dialogue, she also wants to try peach nectar.
>CiLR, 2009
In the final chapter, when seeing the huge amount of food Reimu has before her on the moon, Yuyuko tells Youmu she's jealous that she can't eat such vast feasts every day. Notably, Youmu says in response "I don't think even you could eat that much", suggesting in-universe the person closest to Yuyuko is well aware that her master is a fucking fatty.
>HM, 2014
When she's in the background you can see Yuyuko being endlessly fed riceballs by Youmu.
>AFiEU, 2017
Yuyuko's article is a gourmet article. She is explicitly called a big gourmet and a big eater in the preface, flat-out. Note this is HER article, not an article by Aya on her. AFiEU has a several ads, articles, and stories by user submission. Tenshi also has a food article, actually.

The instances where Yuyuko appears significantly and is referred to in detail but do NOT have mention of food or drink are STB, PMiSS, Soku, TD (all she does here is offer tea to the protagonists who are not Youmu), and WBaWC. That makes for 5 out of 16 cases where her foodlust is unmentioned or referenced. In 11 titles where she's actually around for more than just a cameo, she reminds people that she loves food. She also has cameos though, yes, and I wouldn't be surprised if whenever you found her she was eating. She usually cameos during party appearances after all.

He may be referring to how Yukari cannot casually go to the moon, she needs to do so on a specific day at a specific place with a specific placeMENT of a gap

>> No.22287498

>>22287175
It's not like they're spelled out, but we know that some things are just beyond her power. She can only travel to the moon at a certain time of month (and only by using its reflection as a medium), and has to navigate the path to the Lunar Capital on foot. In SWR she's incapable of gapping directly to Tenshi, and has to make multiple trips. There are also cases where other characters have interfered with her gaps, pulling her out of them or sending her to somewhere else. CiLR and "A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years" show some more of her thought processes. And then the whole plot of AoCF is spent showing how Yukari needs prep time before she's ready to fight someone.

The Sealing Club stories imply a few more things about her limits. Emphasis on imply though, and strictly speaking it's never even confirmed that she and Merry are the same person.

At the very least, we can infer that it's easier for Yukari to gap between two places if they're "close" in some sense. It's hard to tell what the cutoff point for this is though (and if trying to gap too far would fail, exhaust her, or risk transporting her to the Big Bang or something).

>Yuuka is supposedly extremely powerful on top of being old
Indeed, she's suggested to be at level with Eiki and she isn't particularly a bragger so I'm actually more inclined to believe her.

It's also fun to think of the most powerful beings as being the ones who give the least amount of shit (Yuuka, Heca, Okina. Suika)

Sagume is definitely extremely powerful like all Lunarians. Significantly, she's one of the few characters who doesn't use a "defeated" portrait after her boss battle (though ZUN did drew one)

careful it's mostly boring as fuck
Keep in mind that Yukari KNOWS she can't defeat Lunarians. She used that fact (probably) to cull certain youkai in the first Lunar Invasion. In the second she had "won" not by fighting them, but by trolling the fuck out of them. If you haven't read CiLR yet I will admit that the ultimate "gotcha" at the end is pretty worth it. Youmu, Reisen, Mokou, and the final chapters are all great. Eirin, the sisters, Yukari's, and kinda Kaguya's are all really dull.

>> No.22287596

>>22287548
It's the opposite. In both Eirin's and the moon princesses' eyes, they lost to Yukari. The scene where Yukari shows off the alcohol they got from the moon to Eirin is the point of Bougetsushou. We even get to see this scene from two perspectives, and Eirin's point of view of the scene in CiLR is what is most telling.

Yukari made it clear to Eirin 'Don't look down on us. Don't fuck with us.'

To the viewer, we basically get a look of how Yukari operates. She's willing to throw away her pride to keep Gensokyo safe by pre-emptively putting the seeds of fear into the literal Brain of the Moon. She may not be physically the strongest. (Hell, I think Suika and Tenshi are stronger.) But she is cunning.

Bougetsushou is one story, it just alternates between comics (Touhou Bougetsushou ~ Silent Sinner in Blue) and text (Touhou Bougetsushou ~ Cage in Lunatic Runagate). If you're skipping random chapters you'll just get confused.

Japanese fans don't even remember the English subtitles of things, so mistaking it for two independent works is far less common. Even when they're talking about the manga part specifically they call it "the Bougetsushou manga".

Okina can be traced back to a terrible version of Shiva and did not seem threatened by the "big shots of hell" and quite literally knew Heca.
Daikokuten (the Japanese version of Mahakala) was also feared by the Lunarians as they tried to usurp his lands, and they feared his retaliation. So they bound him using shimenawa, but since Okina still walks, that just prevents her from going to the moon, I bet.

Even if she's not as strong as Heca, she's probably SS-tier.

I would say, EoSD is a good entry point. This includes:
- Music
- The game
- Characters, only up to what you have seen/heard, then based on their attributes, read about them in PMiSS, youkai lore, etc.
- Optional, but I also recommend non-h doujins

My personal process of exploring 2hu is/was something like this:
- Gave it a serious go, looked up the wiki which game is the first, "EoSD for Windows Era", note that before this, I had already had some very vague idea of what touhou was (video games), but none of the intricacies and details
- EoSD OSTs on youtube. Rumia's stage theme clicked it for me that evening, then went back and forth between that and title theme for a few days (you read that right, I listened to those 2 songs for days before moving on, the reason why I fondly remember this is that this happened after I finished my presentation on hydropower at the end of my 3rd year in uni, got a 10/10 from that, heck, I was listening to this during others' speeches the day after, my presentation was on Thursday's afternoon)
- Played EoSD until 3rd stage, gave up.. Cirno assblased me into oblivion
- Read Sangetsusei, no idea who the fairies were except Cirno, I didn't even know the significance of Reimu and Marisa in the series at this point, gave up half way fuuuuuuuck
- Read Silent Sinner in Blue, again, 99% of "why-they-are-like-this" went over my head, somehow reached the end, don't even remember how it ends but I do remember some in-door sunbathing panels..
- (at this point, I was mixing lots of non-h doujins into my journey)
~~~ after a while, everything kinda rearranged itself neatly ~~~
- Official game OST
- After bathing myself in the games OSTs while I stuck drawing the characters of the previous games (lol), I read about that game on the wiki, exploring the lore of its characters, locations, etc
- Then re-listen to the music with my newfound knowledge, imagine various things in my mind
- Read non-h doujins featuring its characters, re-read some to appreciate things that I didn't notice before
- Build up hype for the characters in my head
- Watch replays/play the game, witness ZUN's masterpiece in its full glory
- Next game OST.. currently at LoLK.
That's about it. Now I'm trying to integrate Shinto lore into my head, no success so far as it requires Japanese to fully absorb its history. To answer your question, PMiSS is good to go along as you progress, but not something you read all at once. SoPM isn't good, see: features characters from later games right off the bat.
The Earth has: its normal land and Gensokyo
The Moon has: the normal part, the lunar capital hidden 'behind' the sea of tranquility, and a fake moon.
The moon that both sides(?) see normally is fake. This is explained in both IN and SSiB. Were someone to see the real moon, they would go insane.
I will note that the only thing I am unsure of is if the fake moon is used for the normal side of Earth, or if it is just Gensokyo that sees it. It should be noted that the Lunar Capital is located on the Far Side of the moon, meaning nobody on earth would see it normally. But on top of that, it is hidden by a barrier much like how Gensokyo is. So even if someone from the outside world were to look on the far side, they would see nothing.
no, an actual fake moon was only in IN
The "fake moon" you refer to is in actuality not a "moon", it's a reflection of the moon on the heavens, sort of like seeing something through a filter. Suika is the one who explains this in her article of BAiJR, and she's the one who brings up how seeing the moon entirely would be too dangerous.
>"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be somethin' up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more mind-blowin' than that. You can almost never see the real moon, 'cause its appearance is deadly to humans. You can only see the moon's reflection. And the things that make reflections, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? So since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, all you gotta do is tear the heavens apart!"
I was not. Point to where I did this.
This part:
I only say it was -explained- that the moon normally seen is fake.
Also, then why point out that you're a different anon if you also agree that I was wrong? You're confusing the hell out of me.
It's not a moon, anon. Do you call literally your reflection in the mirror a "fake you"? A reflection is a reflection of a real thing. That's why I said it's more obvious to say it's as if you're looking at the moon through a filter. It's the real moon, viewed indirectly. In IN, there was a literal illusionary moon blocking THAT. It's still the real moon, still pushes lunacy, still gives youkai power, it's just not direct.
No, because that has a proper name. A reflection.
But if it's a mirror placed to 'trick' someone, yes, I'd call it a fake one.
So, I was right. I've got people trying to argue meaningless semantics with me. I'm honestly unsure why some of you do this. I'd almost want to say it's probably 'autists' but I fear people will think I'm just trying to insult and dismantle their arguments. You could have pointed out this is what you were referring to in the first place. I still disagree though. Both of those sources give information ABOUT the moon and why we don't see it normally. Of course, if you don't like how I explained it because I confused you, that's fine. I'll accept that.
It would only be Gensokyo/Otherworlds because that's where the fantastical version of the moon exists. In the outside world you could investigate and observe it to be false.
>It should be noted that the Lunar Capital is located on the Far Side of the moon, meaning nobody on earth would see it normally
As mentioned in a post above, the "Far Side" of the moon in the Touhou setting is referring to the fantastical version and not the actual side of the moon. If anything, the Lunar Capital would be on the front side by being located by the Sea of Tranquility, being able to have the Earth reflected in the sea, the rocket being able to land pretty much right there, etc.
(I've found that most anons here will try to find ways to interpret things the wrong way to make a fuss.) If anyone was poorly phrasing, they were just as at fault if not worse because I had to ask several times what they meant(to which, I would get the same reply, or in that one weird anon's case he answered for another anon as if he was them). And then they tried to say a 'reflection isn't a fake' to which I pointed out it is. The semantics argument was because of that. So don't even try to say it's me trying to shift blame. Especially when they tried moving goal posts that way.
Youkai aren't real. To elaborate, the scope of what you can write about youkai is always going to be limited to whatever is actually possible to blame youkai for. Youkai couldn't just show up outside and be like "hey I'm a youkai" and establish youkai as existing because the outside -is- the real world. If you were to write a story about youkai in a way that establishes youkai as real, the setting no longer reflects the real world, so you can't write that. At best, you can write a story where characters concretely -believe- that what they've experienced is a youkai or because of them, but the surrounding context explains everything away as something else and regards the characters as having been mistaken. It's that kind of game.
It isn't a trick, the way Suika describes it it just seems to be the way things work. The trick is specifically around the Lunar Capital. The moon is not a fake, it's rather a natural phenomenon (or more like legendary bullshit that becomes truth in a realm without common sense)
I assume you meant ZUN. As far as afterwords go, it seems he's more inspired by the practice of altered titles and people not reading an article thoroughly in general.
There are some parts influenced by that man, but it's not the basis for the whole work. To quote ZUN;
Ah, sorry. Calling it AFiEU makes me think you're talking about Azmaya.
Anyway, according to CoLA, Aya was inspired by tabloid magazine in general. From chapter 30.
>"Did I not tell you? To delve further into the truth, a different reporting style is necessary compared to the newspaper, whose main goal is to deliver information quickly. So I planned on publishing a book, using the outside world's magazines as reference, to achieve that!"
Whether the magazine she first read covers the election is negligible I would say; Aya cares more about the style of reporting than the article itself. Pretty damn ironic actually.
I think you misinterpreted what I said. Yes the Lunar Capital exists in its own bubble. The anon I was replying to is talking about there being a reflection in the sky of the Moon that filters it so you don't go mad, and is asking whether only Gensokyo sees the moon through the filter or if the Outside does as well. When looking from the Outside, the Moon you see would be the real Moon, not the fantastical Moon, because the fantastical Moon doesn't exist. From Gensokyo and other Otherworlds, they are all connected by being fantastical, and that's where you would need that filter to look at the Moon. By "you could investigate" I mean that you could take a rocket from the Earth and observe that going into space you won't go mad looking at the Moon.
If you were already standing on the real Moon and entered the fantastical Moon the lunacy thing probably wouldn't apply but obviously that's my speculation. The protags didn't go mad during LoLK, so.
>>22317589
It's extremely consistent usage of the terms 表 and 裏, both of which are what outside of Touhou you call the Near and Far side of the Moon. They're translated this way to keep the same play on terminology. I could find explicit examples if you want.
Actually I'd like to amend this by saying if the context were that a youkai was in the Outside World they might also see the Moon as the filtered fantastical Moon; that much is kind of unclear.
Fair enough, I did misinterpret that.
Also a bit heavy on the speculation here, I would say that the most important part is the connection to the fantastic. It doesn't matter even if it's the Outside World, if you are connected to the supernatural, then the moon you're looking at would be the false one (the stronger the connection is, the clearer the fantastic moon would be). You know, the whole "sixth sense" thing, basically.
Keeping that in mind,
>>22328286
I would say yes. Youkai are fantastic themselves, so naturally they can perceive the fantastic, and therefore see the moon through the filter. Not that they would be able to tell either way.
This would be helpful yes. Because right now it sounds like 表 could both refer to the back of the moon AND where the capital is, because it happens to be on the far side. Unless you can provide something saying otherwise.
Just to follow up, I looked it up myself.
'The lunar capital is on the far side of the moon, protected by a barrier that hides its existence.'
月の都は裏側の月に存在し、さらに結界を張りその姿は隠されている。
裏側の月 meaning literal 'far side of the moon'
They also make reference to 'front side' using 表 (which, on the wiki has been translated to 'light side')
And going by the quote, we can determine that the Lunar capital is located on the far/dark side of the moon, hidden behind a barrier similar to the one of Gensokyo.
Actually upon rereading, there are some lines that do make it very clear that the Lunar Capital is in fact on the back side of the Moon. So I will correct myself there!
>それとも、都を載せた裏側が重たくて遠心力で外側を向いてしまったのだろうか
Yukari rhetorically pondering about whether the Capital was heavy enough that centrifugal force pushed it to the outside of the Moon.
>静かの海は月の都の正反対に存在する海である。
Toyohime narrating that the Sea of Tranquility is exactly opposite of the Lunar Capital. She reiterates it later too. So uh yes.
Anyways here are some cases.
>表の月に刺さっていた地上人の旗——我々はアポロの旗と呼んでいる旗が、いつの間にか無くなっていた事から噂は始まったらしい。
Toyohime narration referring to the Apollo flag. 表の月 is in bold in the book. Obviously the flag was also on the front side of the Moon but I think the context along with the bolding is a clear indicator of double meaning.
>荒涼とした表の月——これこそ地上の追い求めた月の姿である [...]
>私は海と山を繋ぐ事が出来る。表の月と裏の月を結ぶ事も出来る数少ない者の一人である。
Toyohime describing the Near side of the Moon as desolate, and explaining she can connect the Near and Far sides of the Moon as she sends Yukari's crow to the real Moon.
>幻想郷は外の世界と常識の結界により断絶され、非常識の内側に存在する。この結界を今のまま保持する為には全ての事柄に裏側が必要なのである
Yukari comparing the Lunar Capital to Gensokyo in that they both need to be separated from reality by common sense. The use of 裏側 to have the second meaning of "hidden" is obvious here as Gensokyo has no literal "back" side.
Yukari also uses 裏側 a few times in this chapter to refer to the back side of the Moon, but as a metaphor to talk about the Lunarians. During a full moon, when she travels there, is when it's night on the back side of the Moon, implying the Lunarians are unprepared.
