It was originally shorthand used for different kanji by buddhist monks.
From what I can tell it was developed independently from hiragana and was actually considered more "official" than hiragana.
But fuck if I know.

Katakana was invented by the Korans during WWII. The Koreans used it to secretly communicate with each other and to assist in building the underground railroad, which they used to smuggle jews out of the country so they wouldn't be holocausted by the Japanese. Thankfully a bright young Japanese man by the name of Aran Churingu cracked the Korean's nefarious code and allowed the Japanese to shut down the railroad and finish off the remaining Jews in the area. After WWII the Japanese adopted the code into their own language in order to serve as a constant reminder to both the Koreans and the Jews not to mess with Japan.

>>22418308

you are completely wrong lol

Katakana was invented by Japanese monks around A.D.900.
They tried to read Chinese letters "Kan-Bun"(漢文) by using Japanese sounds, so then monks cut out a part of each kanji and made letters like this pic.

By the way, Hiragana was invented for women over 1k yrs ago, but since the Edo period, it became very popular with the common people, so Japanese people basically use Hiragana.

Do an experiment for me:
Ask the same question in that general and see how far you get.
And OP was probably not looking for just one answer, but a discussion about it. DJT regulars intentionally ignore Japanese language questions.

>if it is phonetically identical to hiragana, then whats the point?
Because the Japs are too retarded to pronounce single consonants.
Several phonemes are also absent from Japanese and so Japs never learned to pronounce them.
They also can't hear the difference between L and R.
They also use them for expressive writing.
Think like typing in ALL CAPS.

For no good reason at all. There's also no good reason Kanji exists, because you could use the same excuse to say that's why Katakana exists.

There's no such thing as cursive English letters, it's called Roman letters, furthermore it's an alternative way of writing that's not mixed into grammar.

Because you can immediately narrow down what it's there for at a glance, be it a foreign word, a sound effect, or some kind of fictional name for something.
