Why didn't the "demon slayers" just cast themselves out of the dullest shounens in the history of anime? Seriously each episode following the boy slayer and his pals from Demon Slayer Corp as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the colorful art-style, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of high-quality animation, all to make demons undemonic, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when ufotable vetoed the idea of Zenitsu being anything but a minor supporting character in the series; they made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for the manga. The Kimetsu no Yaiba series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the manga was good though

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the manga was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Ufotables series is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that they have no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Kimetsu no Yaiba by the same Hajime Isayama. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading watching Kimetsu no Yaiba at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Attack on titan ." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch “Kimetsu no Yaiba”, you are, in fact, trained to read Attack on titan.

So recently Yoga asked Krashen if he thinks that input is still helpful even if it's not comprehensive (the whole argument about your brain starting to parse the language, learning where words begin and end and to distinguish sound even if you don't understand most of what is being said) and Krashen said no it doesn't help.

In other words, from Krashens point of view MIA is a massive waste of time. Who should i trust now? Help.

incomprehensible input probably does help with this shit but the diminishing returns seem to me to likely be quite steep. doubt its all that useful once you're a 6 months or so into the language. personally there is too much other shit i want to consume other than japanese stuff (podcasts, movies, audio books, music) so i'm not willing to give up all that anyways.

Westerners see Samurai as men who have katanas with them wearing kimonos.
But that's not true, because samurai are those who have the sword within their hearts.
Those who have never let go of the sword within their hearts, those who are willing to fight to the death for those, who they love and cherish. To protect the ones they care about, they will protect those within the reach of their sword.
I believe the day will come, when all of Japan will reawaken... and Araki Sadao's vision, Mishima Yukio's vision will be finally realized....
I pray for that day to come. I pray for our country to be made strong again. The American occupation of our country in Okinawa, must end. The American occupation must finally end.

There are words with meanings you can't immediately guess from kanji. On top of that, rare kanji used in 2 or 3 words, plus rendaku not being an exact science, meaning there are words with readings that aren't immediately obvious. So, you need to learn those. And you're not going to do it through reading because if you're still at the stage where you can encounter the same unknown word often, you're a shitter

Exactly, that's why I always felt like it's stupid to learn a sentence by itself. Especially when some of the packs I saw they use don't even have a specific part of the sentence highlighted. They think it's going to get you fluent faster, but really it's just making you understand anime faster, which is fine if that's all you care about. But it's a waste of your time through and through when you could do so much more.

a sentence card doesn't make you "learn a sentence"
you see the sentence, you try to read it
if you can read everything and understand the meaning, pass
if not, fail
it's not much different from reading a sentence in a book
at no point do you actively try to learn or memorize the sentence, you just get repeated exposure to it, and repeated exposure is the key to quick language acquisition

>Especially when some of the packs I saw they use don't even have a specific part of the sentence highlighted
because if you were to highlight a word you'd just look at the word that's highlighted, see if you can read it and move on
but that's not the point of sentence cards
the point is to get repeated exposure to words and phrases in the context of native japanese

>> No.22461568

>>22461558

That makes more sense. I still don't agree with the practice, it can be helpful with set phrases or collocations that come up often. Otherwise I find very little use to reading a sentence a hundred times, when if you knew the words in it instead you could read a hundred sentences. It ultimately promotes a very passive and camp type of learning where you are rarely getting new material after a while. More than once have I seen an ajatter spout "Oh, I didn't know you could use this word like that!"

>> No.22461634

>>22461568
>presumably you are mining sentences from content so shouldn't it be a given that you understand it?
the most common scenario is that you come across a sentence in native material in which there is one aspect you don't immediately understand (a reading, meaning, usage in context, a turn of phrase, etc.)
so then you look it up, and now you presumably understand it
but that doesn't mean that you'll also understand it the next time you come across it
so you put that sentence in your anki deck, and every time you see the sentence, the aspect you previously didn't understand will get reinforced in your brain
and the next time you come across that aspect in a slightly different situation while consuming native material, your chances of immediately grasping it are going to be much higher
and if you succeed, you probably won't have to worry about that particular aspect ever again because you've sufficiently internalized it

>why not just consume more content instead? what's the added value of sentence cards?
targeted, repeated exposure is more efficient than hoping that you'll come across an aspect of the language that still needs reinforcement within an appropriate timeframe by mere coincidence

It's either N1 passes with barely over the fail limit or people who cannot speak or write (I've yet to see a good 漢検). What I meant by passive is that it's not serious, and when I look at ajatt "success stories" then that's only a belief that's reinforced within me, because most of those people wouldn't make it if they had to work or live in Japan.

listen. the vast majority of people who set out to learn japanese don’t get past N3, period. that’s just reality. the fraction that do get significantly past that, have mostly been at it for years (4 or more in many cases) because they take breaks from learning, go slower, or just have lives. and those ajatt results videos mostly consist of people who have been at it from 6 months to a year max. do the math

most people are completely unaware of 95% or more of their thinking in the first place though
that’s why “you’re telling yourself you’re depressed” is kind of a misleading statement because the majority of everyone’s thoughts are happening automatically in the background of their conscious awareness, including a depressed person who’s brain is churning depressed thoughts out nearly all day. they aren’t actively doing the “telling”.

what you’re thinking of as “positive thinking” doesn’t work because most people who try it do it in such a way that it doesn’t hold a candle to the frequency and volume of their automatic negative thoughts. it’s like trying to put out a forest fire by splashing a jug of water on it every few hours

What the FUCK does this sentence mean.

それは大いなる無名性から息を呑む深淵への、驚くべき跳躍だった。

大いなる「おおいなる great; large」
無名「むめい unsigned; nameless」
性「せい nature; -ness」
息をの呑む「いきをのむ to catch one's breath/have one's breath taken away」
深淵「しんえん abyss; ravine」
驚くべき「おどろくべき astonishing」
跳躍「ちょうやく jump; leap」

I can't even begin to piece this together.
