well i took 38 2-hour long sessions of japanese courses over a one year period. the problem wasn't that it wasn't "real" japanese, but rather that it felt very slow because classes only took place once a week, and felt like the textbooks' sentences didn't offer me anything that i could emotionally get attached to, because they all used examples of normalfag behavior in ordinary (or mostly formal) situations.
sure, there was basic grammar instruction too, but it was glossed over so quickly that some of my classmates didn't even understand sov word order, or how basic particles work.
i felt like it was much better to study on my own every day, so that i could at least make progess at my own desired rhythm.

I am really bummed out. I have been in Japan 11 fucking year. I just can not improve my Japanese. I have hit a wall so high I can not see the top. I use English at home, at work. I know enough to get around Japan but always have some one to translate for me in difficult situation. I have a new job and I really need to show marked improvement in my Japanse if I want to stay.My vocab and Kanji is good but my reading and grammar is shit. I have studied and memorized every N4/5 kanji and vocab list I can find. I have thousands of note cards everywhere. This past July Test had hardly any of the vocab from the n5 or n4 lists. I was so pissed.
