Now that I have mastered hiragana, I have taken a look at katakana and I see that some characters share similarities with hiragana, some that are similar are mapped to different sounds and some are entirely different with seemingly no rule. What's up with that?

So my idea from yesterday that is assisting learning programming using Anki does seem to be feasible. I've been playing around with some Python tasks and how to make effective fast cards which look good. I also create an extremely large review interval so the cards have large intervals much faster than Japanese vocabulary cards. Here is a video of some cards for some basic cmd operations just to show you the principle that I intend to use for the actual programming cards:

When Chinese speakers talk about giving someone a call, they say they "hit" the phone.
This is why context is needed.
Sentence cards give context.
Vocab cards don't.

My study plan is:

11:00 am - 1:00 pm: 2 hours of Kanji writing (I usually aim to learn 6-10 new Kanji and write them during this time)

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm: 2 hours of grammar and vocabulary learning.

9:00 pm - 10:00 pm : 1 hour of grammar and Kanji revision (revising what I learnt throughout the day to remember).

I spend an hour in the morning doing Wanikani/Memrise/Bunpro reviews. Then if I’m at the start of a Genki Chapter I read it, if I already read it I start adding vocab and grammar points to Memrise/Bunpro, and if Im done with that I do a few exercises.

During the day I do Wanikani stuff if I have a moment to spare.

Then I spend an hour to an hour and a half in the evening doing mostly the same thing in the morning but instead of Genki stuff I usually spend it either reading a graded reader book, watching Game Grammar/Sarah K, or translate Japanese fanart for my own amusement.

This also doesn’t include time spent “passively” consuming Japanese like watching anime, playing Japanese mobages, or reading my twitter feed that has a lot of Japanese speakers on it, which varies day to day.

Beginner here who needs to ask a question that's probably stupid. I just finished learning Hiragana and Katakana and feel pretty confident I've memorized them all. So I downloaded Anki and got the Core 2K/6K deck recommended in the OP link. I noticed that in the first few cards there was some Kanji characters. I haven't started looking at Kanji yet so I was wondering if I should study some Kanji so that I recognize the characters that I see before starting on that Anki deck. Or am I supposed to learn the Kanji characters at the same time as learning the words that come up? Just want to make sure I'm not jumping ahead and missing anything. What did the rest of you move onto after finishing with Hiragana and Katakana?

I practically have access to a massive bunch of Japanese people I can hang out with or talk to at any point of day. All these beginner things that I am working through of course are no problem to someone more experienced but they are not intuitive to a beginner so they are worth memorizing. Took me some time to figure out how to make those cards but by now I make them very fast and efficient. The interval modifier is seriously cranked up and the graduate interval is 2-5 days. That is to say if I answer those cards correctly I will not even be spending a minute or two on these per average just because of how fast the intervals grow and I made sure everything is answerable if you simply have the knowledge so I should be able to still answer them years later if I still know what everything is. So in that sense yes they are good cards and even if I later when I am more knowledgeable decide it was retarded, I won't have lost anything significant because of how little time I spend making those cards. What I gain however is guaranteed remembrance of everything I put on it.

I wanted to separate the definitions of スーパー大辞林 in yomichan so I could make a unique card for each definition (using the definition field as the key of the card) in anki, but the definitions were all mixed up, so I created a (very rough) python script to separate them for me, and it seems to be working.

If anyone is interested in doing the same thing, just unzip the dict zip file, run the program below with python3 in the same folder and zip the files back.
