>> No.22736558

I have this sentence, it's a line from a song:
見つめあえば星はきらめき

So the first part is about "staring", the second part is about how "stars are sparkling". I'm not really understanding how these two phrases fit together... is it saying her eyes are like stars sparkling? When she stares the stars are sparkling? Or are they just unrelated phrases sung as one line?

There's an argument to be made that you can't properly learn rtk until you know Japanese because you will likely mix-up of the arbitrary English keywords for the reviews resulting in some failed reviews.

What I noticed after starting rtk what's that all of a sudden I had trouble reviewing some basic words that I already knew because my brain saw the Kanji differently, basically deconstructing it instead of the whole blob it had gotten used to recognising.

However after a few months this issue basically vanished. Nowadays when I come across a kanji in the reviews and the Candy is used in a word that I already know no I add the Japanese word written in hiragana next to the English keyword

To add to my other post, I think it's probably really best to do RTK before you even start learning Japanese. Due to how the book is structured the information is basically useless until you completely finish it since some basic ass common Kanji appear in the back end of it.
If you can already read a lot of vocab and you start doing RTK your brain will definitely become a bit confused because it is now deconstructing and then reconstructing again what you already became able to see holistically, this time using a different "code" to rewrite the memory.
Unfortunately I did not do that when I started because back then DJT was full of anti RTK shitposting and unfortunately I bought into it

well thing is N2 really doesn't certify much, imo it's a nice bonus at best to whatever random thing you may apply but if you want something language related N1 is what you should aim for
but if you are graduating properly there is no need to rush things anyway just go do some work somewhere see how you like it and keep learning Japanese you'll find your chance I believe it :)

I stand corrected, I thought anki only had much support for Japanese language learning and other languages would have few and shitty decks that wouldn't be worth using in comparison to something like Duo because I couldn't find many for some different subjects I searched for in the past

While i was watching the other 3 i got a sneaking feeling that i don't even like anime that much and that my days of consuming even shitty anime like Date A Live while having fun are behind me.
And then i wondered if there's even enough compelling content for me to actually learn japanese...

I should probably just rewatch ep.1 of Eizouken! to remind me how great anime can be...

for people who are too lazy to always look for raws check this out i trained myself to ignore the english subtitles completely while streaming eng-subbed anime. the trick is that you have to just keep your eyes on the face of whatever character is talking in any given scene. and the rare moments there is no single character on screen, just focus on the middle of the screen and gaze at the art. its impossible to read the subtitles while deliberately focusing your eyes this way the entire time
there might be times where action is happening on the bottom so your eyes just graze over the english subs accidentally. but that will be so infrequent that it won't be enough to pull your attention away from listening primarily to the raw japanese
and before you say im just fooling myself and im somehow reading the english subs anyway, i KNOW i'm not reading them because since i started doing this a few episodes ago (couldnt find raws for a show i wanted to watch) my comprehension dropped to like 60%, which is the same as it is when i watch my downloaded raws. so its basically indistinguishable from watching raw as long as you don't mind the vague (unreadable) shadow of the subtitles in your lower periphery

press download and wait hours for the series to download in most cases when its not a currently airing show
if it doesn't have seeders at all which most stuff i want to watch doesn't since its older, you're SOL

Tae Kim is so good. If you actually buy the book and read it it's super informative. Especially in the second half of the book it gets into slang and colloquialisms. Lot of this stuff I'm always looking up. He shows how they condense words and why a lot of stuff is the way it is. Just skim the explanations though they're long winded but use the examples because they're extremely helpful.

>> No.22745691

theres literally no reason to be staring at the bottom of the screen anyway in a show
the majority of the action happens in the center and sides
the only reason people ever look down frequently is when they're watching with subs. when i watch raw i don't look down except for the infrequent times when something is actually happening there which i addressed in my post
>>22745639
the past 3 shows i looked up had zero seeders so idk what you're watching but things i want to watch frequently don't have seeders or show up at all
then about half the time the seeders are so few that it takes at least an hour to download when i could have already watched 3 episodes of it in that time if i'd just streamed

before i started learning jap i always watched anime streamed. it was easy quick and stress free and i thought all my anime watching forever would be like that
then when i started learning i was told i had to only watch raws to make any progress. which cant be streamed and have to be torrented and some shows can be hard to find
sometimes i asked myself
>why am i having to do MORE work to access anime just because i want to learn japanese when before it was so easy to instantly watch any anime
but i stuck with torrenting whatever raws i could find because i believed i could never ever make progress if i watched anything that happened to have hard subs at the bottom. that some how it was impossible to control where my eyes went and the subs simply being there somehow forced me to read them
glad i finally figured out this workaround. same feel as watching raw, fully experiencing whats going on on screen (not missing art or animations because my gaze was on the subs) and only using my ears to listen

if you refer to the average reading speed of an english native, it takes 2 seconds to read a 10-word sentence. in an anime with 300 sentences, that's 600 seconds, or 10 minutes spent looking at the bottom of the screen to read subtitles. that is a long time.
incomparable to 5 glances per episode just to read names of characters or locations in japanese (less than 30 seconds total)

You know what else I hate? The concept of the pure unsullied protagonist who has the constant moral high ground. Naruto and Luffy despite living in worlds and working in professions where killing each other is 日常茶飯事 they still both have never killed anyone.
The Tokyo Ghoul shit I'm watching right now reminds me of the same thing, all his nakama fighting the enemies are taking each other's lives and what about him? Only he goes around breaking everyone's weapons and knocking them out instead. It's just so silly and really takes me out of the show.

the demons tanjiro kills are evil so it's not a big deal that he kills them. nobody feels sad when he cuts spider boy's head off because who gives a fuck about spider boy? did spider boy's flashbacks actually make anyone sad about his death? in the end you still wanted him to get fucked because he didn't change his ways or anything. at most the circumstances that caused him to be bad sucked. it's never a difficult decision for the MC or for the audience.

I'm not saying I forced myself to like anything. I'm just saying that with time I changed as a person and grew to like a wider array of things.
One example would be strategy games. As a kid I never really cared or understood but later I really burned up a lot of time playing them. But that doesn't mean I stopped liking the RPG and action games that I played as a kid, my palette simply widened. Speaking about palette, this is of course also true for food, I was a very picky eater when I was a kid but can now enjoy a wide variety of foods. Suppose though that may have some biological mechanism behind it so maybe it doesn't count.
If you want something more specific, the first time I watched Bakemonogatari was probably not too long after it came out. Probably watched in in 2012 or around that time and I remember hating it. Didn't understand it and thought it was too lewd (in my mind at that time was that any lewdness whatsoever was distasteful). But when I re-watched it a couple years later it resonated much deeper with me and it grew to be one of my favorite anime series of all time.
The ideas I have and my attitudes change all the time, but it's not like I lose understanding of how I was previously or rather in what way all the works I have consumed were enjoyable to me so with time my palette simply keeps increasing. I suppose if you really want to an example where you might grow to dislike something as you grow up it is absolute kiddy shit, maybe on the level of Teletubbies, but it's not that you actually grow to dislike it but just that lose interest in it as the more grown up you was never considered a target audience and most of the appeal for kids is simply seeing something fun and colorful they don't really understand. But it's not like I put a foot on the ground and say "I don't like Teletubbies" because that's just not really right.
Btw I'm just making this up as I go if you can tell me something I used to like but now dislike I'll consider your point lol.

Niggers on here be saying it takes years to be able to actually be capable of anything but half a year of daily study based on my research should minimum be enough to let you understand what most everyday sentences are trying to convey even if you don't get it all but I believe it will still take a couple or few years to truly git gud
I've learned with duo in the past with other languages and the speed of learning is nowhere close to the speed I am learning Japanese with these methods are

the problem with questions like "what does てさ mean" is it's built upon like 10 preconceived false notions about the language and there's no point breaking them all down when you're not gonna acquire anything but a momentary understanding of 1 specific sentence which is ultimately irrelevant in the grand scheme of acquisition of a language

Themed grouping > Word in Japanese > Pause > Translation in English > Repeated a few times > Next.

When I was abroad in Japan I spent most of my time with other foreign students. At least in my exchange uni, I met like 3 Nihonjins who could actually converse in English. The rest spoke English as broken as I spoke Japanese and was also very shy.
Your mileage might vary between universities though.
I still miss the time though fuck.

Protips for good nihon ryugakusei experience: Try to get to a conversational level in Japanese and jump on Tinder.
As in my exchange uni, most girls don't speak any English, so the only Japanese girls I went to dates with had interest in my country / studying abroad in general. Being able to speak decent Japanese might open up more doors for you.
