Mana markers are more to give your favorite species dibs on you than to keep you from being stuck with shit. It is indeed implied that humans were made in a non-limited state, and the pharaohs did have an ancient prosperous kingdom but that seems to all be quite separate from the civilization the automatons were a part of. The desert kingdom ruins are not noted for having any signs of such advanced technology for instance.

Also, it's not like the mana of a unfettered human ceases to be human, it just becomes stronger. Yet the mana in the automatons is explicitly not human.

Right now my theory would be that the automaton civilization predates humans and monsters. Perhaps they were some other race the gods made and later destroyed.
