it's just an analogy. almost all analogies are "false equivalences" in some sense. someone could say the sun is like the moon and someone could call that a false equivalence, except it depends on what properties are being compared. both look the same size and we perceive both to be circular. but the sun is much larger and is the center of our solar system and is composed of entirely different materials.

in the case of the pit full of spikes, i've never directly experienced it. but i've seen examples of people dying by being impaled on something like a fence and i can infer the pit full of spikes share those properties and it would be a painful death. and i'm reasonably sure toradora is trash because it shares properties with lots of other trash (it's a romance anime, it's based off an ln, and it shares an animation style with many other shows which are trash).

The only method that actually works is doing repetitions on paper. Get some primary school books, download an app or whatever, just follow the order japanese dudes learn it. Once you know at least all the primary school kanji (1000+) move to Anki, download the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course or any other kanji deck and do repetitions everyday, at least 10 new cards everyday. From here on, you'll be learning new words in anki with kanji you already know and you'll have to learn at least 10 new secondary school kanji everyday, so you can keep learning new kanji while revising easier ones on anki.

whoever originally made these scans saved the colorspace of the images as greyscale. i can't seem to change it at all with Imagemagick though, the colorspace option just doesn't work on these images for whatever reason.

changing them to indexed in gimp works (and cuts down the file size by a nice amount) but that means i'd have to manually go through 700 images and fix them one by one...

this will sound super obvious, maybe patronizing to some, but believe me when i say that i struggled to grasp the idea of kanji until i made this connection. i just want to share that experience with anyone else who might be struggling. i will also try to explain why you're wasting your time if you try to learn every reading of every kanji.

yes, kanji is confusing at first glance. you have these crazy symbols that represent an idea but don't give you any explicit indication of pronunciation. their pronunciation can change at any moment. combining two of them can create a completely new pronunciation. and somehow they maintain their meaning across multiple languages? what?

but here's the thing: you're already extremely familiar with this concept. the numerals 0-9 are ideograms that function in a near identical way to kanji. let me explain.

first, numerals represent the idea of a word. someone who knows english but never learned numerals would have no idea how to pronounce "6."

second, the reverse is also true. numerals retain meaning across several languages. a french "5" (cinq) is the same as a german "5," (fünf) and you can understand it even if you can't pronounce it.

third, numerals have different readings, even within the same language. just like kanji, we add suffixes to help you know which reading to use. for example 3 has the reading "three," but when you add the suffix -rd, its reading changes to "thi."

fourth and finally, combining two numerals can give you a completely new reading that bizarrely resembles neither of the components. if you can memorize that combing 1 "one" and 0 "zero" can give you the counterintuitive reading of 10 "ten," then surely you can memorize kanji words. "one" and "two" combine to make "twelve"?! crazy!

so this should hopefully help you to understand why it's unnecessary to memorize each reading of each kanji individually. after all, how would you look at someone if they memorized:

This is the only page where he writes about が in the basic grammar section. In this page he explains が as serving to identify or elaborate on the word that precedes が as that which is followed by が. In the sentence, the verb お気に入り is clearly speaking for the shoes as the direct. However my understanding was that the を particle would denote direct objects, which is what I would've expected given my narrow understanding. I would expect the sentence to be [implied 私は]靴を気に入る. With what is written about が in the "any shitty guide" I can't see が being explained to have this rule. My understanding is that が would only be used with a verb to clarify that some non topic noun is performing a verb, which I why I theorized that the verb may be intransitive. The shoes are taking the action that is them being liked. Hence intransitive.
